Somewhere in the Arctic dark right now, four hundred metres down, there is a shark that was already alive when Napoleon was.

The Greenland shark, Somniosus microcephalus. It lives in water near freezing — down to about −1.8 °C — and has been recorded to depths of around 2,647 metres. It grows less than a centimetre a year.

In 2016 Julius Nielsen and colleagues published the ages of 28 of them in Science. The results were not what anyone expected.

A life span of at least 272 years. The largest animal in the study, five metres long, came out at 392 ± 120 years old. That makes it the longest-lived vertebrate known — longer than the bowhead whale, longer than anything else with a backbone.

And the number that this zine is really about, the one that stopped everybody:

They don't reach sexual maturity until roughly 156 years old.

How anyone could possibly know

You cannot age a Greenland shark the usual way. It has no bone to lay down rings in — see the zine before last — and its vertebrae are too poorly calcified to count.

So the researchers used the one tissue in a vertebrate body that never updates itself.

At the very centre of the eye lens is a core of crystallin proteins laid down before the animal is born, and then left alone. No turnover. No replacement. Whatever carbon was around when that lens formed is still sitting there, decades or centuries later. The eye carries its own birth certificate.

Then the second trick, and it is a strange one. Between the mid-1950s and the early 1960s, atmospheric nuclear testing spiked the amount of radiocarbon in the atmosphere worldwide — a sharp, dated, globally shared marker scientists call the bomb pulse. It works out to a timestamp printed across the whole planet.

Find that spike in the lens core, and you know the animal was born after it. Don't find it, and you know it was born before — and how much ¹⁴C is there tells you roughly how long before.

The oldest animals in the study were born before the pulse. Before the industrial revolution finished. Some of them, before the United States.

The hinge

"Late" is a
comparison, not a measurement


Here is the thing worth carrying out of this zine.

A Greenland shark that reaches maturity at 156 is not late. It is not behind. It has not fallen off a track. It is exactly on time — for a Greenland shark.

The word late only means something once you've picked a calendar, and the calendar always comes from somewhere. Pick a herring's, and every Greenland shark that ever lived is a catastrophic failure. Pick the Greenland shark's, and the herring is gone before the shark has opened its eyes properly.

Neither calendar is the true one. There isn't a true one. There are just organisms and the rates they run at, and a ruler somebody laid alongside them afterwards.

We do this to people constantly, and we do it with enormous confidence. Delayed. Behind. Not age-appropriate. Should have been doing this by now. Each one sounds like an observation about a child. Every one of them is a comparison to a schedule, and the schedule was made by averaging other people.

In 2012 Yuuki Watanabe and colleagues put data loggers on six free-swimming Greenland sharks and measured how fast they actually go.

Cruising speed: 0.34 metres per second. That is about one kilometre an hour. A slow walk.

Tail-beat frequency: 0.15 Hz — one sweep of the tail roughly every seven seconds. Both figures were the lowest recorded for any fish of that size. The paper is titled, plainly, The slowest fish.

Which sets up a genuine puzzle, because their stomachs contain seal. Watanabe's team found seal tissue in a substantial share of the guts they examined. And a seal, in water, is faster than this shark by an enormous margin. It is not close. The shark cannot chase anything.

So it doesn't. The proposal in the paper is that the sharks take seals while the seals are asleep — creeping up on animals that have to rest in the water, and arriving before they wake.

Read that again, because it isn't a consolation prize. This animal is not succeeding despite being slow. Silence is only possible at that speed. The strategy requires the trait.

The eye again

Nearly blind,
and it doesn't signify


There is a copepod called Ommatokoita elongata, a couple of centimetres of crustacean, and it spends its adult life clamped to the cornea of a Greenland shark's eye.

In the study that documented the damage — Borucinska, Benz and Whiteley, 1998 — every shark they examined was carrying one. The parasite anchors itself with a structure called a bulla, and around each anchor the cornea goes opaque, ulcerated, scarred.

By any ordinary reading, these animals are severely visually impaired, and it is close to universal in the population.

And it appears to cost them approximately nothing.

Four hundred metres down in the Arctic, in water that is dark most of the year and black below, vision is not the sense that matters. They have smell, they have a lateral line, they have electroreception. The environment never asks the question that the eye would answer.

An impairment is a relation, not a property. Take the same eye and put it on an animal that hunts by sight in bright water, and it is a catastrophe. Down there it barely registers.

slow being beautiful


It would be easy to stop here, and it would be a lie.

Read the last line of Nielsen's abstract. Having established the longest vertebrate life span ever measured, the authors do not celebrate. They raise concerns about species conservation.

Here's why. An animal that takes about 156 years to reproduce even once has almost no capacity to replace losses. Kill a thousand of them and you are not waiting a decade for the population to recover — you are waiting longer than the modern world has existed. Every Greenland shark caught as bycatch today is an animal whose replacement will not be mature until well after everyone reading this is dead.

They were hunted for liver oil for a long time, in very large numbers. They still turn up in trawls. The IUCN lists the species as Vulnerable.

So slowness is not a superpower. It is a strategy with a bill attached. It is superbly adapted to an environment that stayed roughly the same for millions of years, and it is nearly defenceless against one that changes in decades.

And that is the honest shape of the thing, for sharks and for us. A pace is not good or bad on its own. It is survivable or it isn't, and what decides that is the world around it.

What follows from that

The environment
decides


Put the last three spreads together and you get a single claim, and it is the one this whole collection keeps arriving at.

A ruined cornea is a disaster in bright water and nothing at 400 metres. A 156-year childhood works fine in an ocean that holds still and is fatal in one full of trawlers. A one-kilometre-an-hour cruising speed is useless in a chase and perfect for arriving quietly.

None of those outcomes is a fact about the shark. Every one is a fact about the shark and the world it is in — and when the outcome is bad, the thing that changed was almost never the animal.

Disabled people have a name for this. It's the social model of disability: the distinction between a body's actual condition and the disabling produced by environments and expectations built as though that condition didn't exist. Stairs disable a wheelchair user. Open-plan offices and fluorescent light disable us. The pace of a school day disables a kid who needs longer.

Which turns the question around. Not how do we get this child up to speed — but what is this environment demanding, who chose that, and what would it cost to stop?

That is what a Cavendish Space is for, and it is why Stimpunks argues for slow pedagogy — unhurried time, room to revisit, the present moment treated as though it counted. Not as an indulgence for slow children. As a design change that stops manufacturing failure.

The defence of the clock

Better get
used to it


Ask for a slower pace and you will meet one particular answer so often that it has an acronym.

Alfie Kohn named it in Education Week in 2005: what he calls the BGUTI principle — Better Get Used To It.

You have heard every version. Homework in the early years because there's homework later. Grades young because there are grades eventually. Sitting still now because a job will demand it. No accommodation at school because the real world won't accommodate you. The logic is always the same: life will be hard later, so hardship now is preparation.

Kohn's sentence about this is the one that belongs in this zine, and it is exact:

It has to ignore them, or it stops working. The whole argument treats the timetable as the fixed thing and the child as the adjustable thing. But if children arrive at things at genuinely different rates — and they do — then "everyone gets this at this age" guarantees that some of them are being handed something they cannot yet use. BGUTI doesn't overlook developmental difference by accident. It cannot survive noticing it.

And the claim underneath is not even true. Kohn again: people don't really get better at coping with unhappiness because they were deliberately made unhappy when they were young. Early adversity is not a vaccine. It mostly just teaches you that adults will do this to you.

This is where behaviorism does its worst work. A model that watches compliance and reaches for consequences has no way to represent a child who needs longer — so needing longer shows up as refusing, and refusing gets a consequence. The consequence never changes the pace. It only adds fear to it.

Stimpunks' version is blunter, and we'll stand on it: we don't prepare students for a world of potential oppression by oppressing them.

This is the zine in this set most likely to be turned into a poster we'd hate. Naming those readings so they can't be mistaken for ours.

Notslow is better. We just spent a spread on the bill: this strategy leaves a species that cannot recover from us. Slow isn't superior. It's a set of trade-offs, and some of them are brutal.
Not"you're secretly a Greenland shark." You are not an Arctic shark and your life is not 400 years long. The shared thing is the logic of the ruler, not the animal.
Noteveryone just needs more time. Sometimes more time is exactly right. Sometimes what's needed is a different route, a support, a tool, or dropping the demand entirely. "Go slower" is one accommodation, not the answer.
Not"but the real world won't wait." Sometimes true, and it still doesn't license BGUTI. That a hardship exists later is not evidence that inflicting it earlier prepares anyone — and the "real world" is not a fixed object either. It is also built, also by someone, also changeable.
Notimpairment is imaginary. The social model says disability is produced by environments — not that bodies have no conditions and nothing ever hurts. Those corneas really are scarred. Pain and difficulty are real, and naming the environment doesn't erase them.
Nota reason to skip support. "The environment is the problem" must never become an excuse to leave someone without help while we wait for the world to be redesigned. Change the water and hold the person.
Notbiology proving a politics. A rhyme, not a proof. That an animal thrives at its own pace is not why a person's pace deserves respect — it would deserve respect in an ocean where everything moved at one speed.

Closer to home

Nobody asked

If you have been on the receiving end of a developmental timetable, you already know the whole of this zine in your body.

The chart on the wall at the clinic. The milestone that didn't get met. The report that said working below age-related expectations. The reading level, the year group, the "should be able to by now." The particular quiet of being the last one still doing the thing everybody else finished.

None of that measured you. All of it measured a gap between you and an average — and the average was assembled from other people, for reasons that had a lot to do with sorting and not much to do with you.

Some things do take you longer. That's true and it doesn't need softening. What isn't true is the part that got smuggled in with it: that taking longer is a defect, that the schedule is a law of nature, and that being behind on it means being behind at living.

There is an animal in the Arctic that spends a century and a half growing up, and no one has informed it that this is a delay. It is not lagging. It is not a slow version of a faster animal. It is simply what it is, at the rate it does it, and it was doing that before every schedule any of us has ever been measured against was invented.

You are made of the same star stuff as that shark: the same carbon, the same calcium, forged in the same kind of dying star. Two arrangements of it, running at completely different speeds, and the universe has never once indicated a preference.

Take the time it takes. Then ask who built the clock, and whether it can be moved.

You were never late. You were being timed by somebody else's watch.

The three of them

three refusals


This is the last of three zines built out of one young person's special interest, and they turn out to make one argument in three moves.

No. 32 refused the word primitive. Sharks didn't fail to invent bone — their lineage had it and let it go. What was read as an earlier stage was a later change, and the reading was a verdict wearing a description's coat.

No. 33 refused the word gross. Disgust isn't information about an animal; it's information about a frame, learned young, and it does border work on bodies — theirs and ours.

No. 34 refuses the word late. There is no lateness without a calendar, and someone always brought the calendar.

Three words that feel like observations and are all three verdicts. Primitive. Gross. Late. Each one describes a relationship between a thing and a standard, while sounding like a fact about the thing.

And the sharks did not know they were carrying any of it. They were only ever doing the thing they do — slowly, in the cold, in the dark — while a species with a very short life and a very fast clock swam past and filed them.

The animal is never the argument. The ruler is always the argument.

Held honestly. The Nielsen figures are estimates with real uncertainty and the paper states them as such: 272 years is a minimum, and the headline 392 carries ±120. Age at maturity is given as "at least" 156 ± 22 and is inferred from body length, not observed directly. Borucinska and colleagues examined six sharks and found the copepod on all of them; very high prevalence is widely reported for this species, but "essentially all of them" rests on small samples, and we have not put a population percentage in the prose. That the sharks don't need their eyes is a well-supported inference from their habitat and their other senses rather than a directly measured finding — the honest version is that vision appears not to be load-bearing for them, not that blindness has been shown to be costless. The recovery curves on spread 7 are labelled on the figure as schematic, not measured data; they illustrate a mechanism the conservation literature describes and are not plotted from a population model. And the ethics do not come from the biology. That an animal thrives at its own pace is not why a person's pace deserves respect — as about.html puts it, we are noticing a rhyme, not collecting a proof.

The star stuff is Carl Sagan's, and the SN 1006 remnant on every Stimpunks page. Four hundred years in the cold and the dark, at one kilometre an hour. The universe doesn't pathologize its own variation, and it has never once told anybody to hurry up.
