It arrives
before you do


You know the feeling. It gets there ahead of you.

Something on a screen, something in a jar, something in a documentary about the deep sea — and before a single thought has formed, the whole body has already voted. The face does its thing. The shoulders go up. Ugh. No. Get it away.

And it doesn't feel like an opinion. That's the important part. It feels like perception — like you have simply noticed a property the thing has, the way you'd notice that it was blue.

It isn't. There is no gross in the animal. There is no gross anywhere in the ocean. Gross is a reading, produced by a particular frame, in a particular animal, at a particular moment in its history — and this zine is about who ends up on the wrong side of it.

Because the reflex doesn't stop at hagfish.

Before we go any further

Two icks,
not one


There is a distinction the research makes, and an earlier version of this zine walked straight past it. It matters enormously, so it goes here, before the argument.

Paul Rozin's own framework separates two things that both feel like "ew."

Distaste is sensory. It is a response to the actual properties of a thing — bitter, sour, slimy, sticky, cold and wet in the wrong way. And it is there from the beginning. Put something bitter on a newborn's tongue and you get the gape face: mouth open, upper lip pulled back, nose wrinkled, brow down. It is highly conserved across species. It has been observed in humans in utero.

And then the finding that settles how deep it runs. In 1973 Jacob Steiner published observations of the gustofacial response in anencephalic newborns — infants born without most of the higher brain. They make the face too.

The response does not require a cortex. It isn't a judgement, it isn't an attitude, and it cannot be a prejudice, because there is nothing there to hold one.

Disgust proper is a different animal. Rozin calls it ideationally based and contamination-sensitive: you don't have to taste a cockroach to be disgusted by one. It attaches to ideas about things — where they have been, what they touched, what they count as.

This zine is about the second one. Everything that follows — the borders, the projections, the sorting of bodies — is the ideational kind doing political work. The sensory kind is not a prejudice and never was.

You were never a blank slate. You arrived with a body that already had positions on the world, and that gape is older than our species — history, carried in you. Which is, after all, the premise of this entire collection.

The correction on this spread is Helen Edgar's, who taught children with profound and multiple learning disabilities for twenty years and pointed out that the first version of this zine presumed a thinking response to the ick — and that the babies and the young people she has worked with plainly have one without it.

Where it came from

The second one
gets taught


The gape was there at birth. The contamination logic was not, and small children are famously unbothered by it.

Paul Rozin and April Fallon, in a 1987 paper that still anchors the field, treat disgust as a food emotion at root — revulsion at the prospect of taking something into the mouth. Its objects are overwhelmingly of animal origin. And crucially, this kind develops, arriving across a child's first eight years or so rather than being present at the start.

They also describe what it runs on. Disgust obeys the laws of sympathetic magic — including the law of contagion, under which contact transfers an essence. A cockroach touches your sandwich; the sandwich is now inedible. Not partly inedible where the legs went. All of it. Forever.

Sit with that, because it's the whole argument in one move: the reaction is out of all proportion to any physical fact. No amount of chemistry explains the whole sandwich. What's operating is a rule about categories and contact — and rules about categories are things a culture teaches you.

Which means the border can be redrawn. People do it constantly, in both directions, without noticing.

Somebody, somewhere, feeds their child something you would gag on, and their child grows up finding it delicious and finding your dinner revolting. Both of you think you are perceiving.

The worm with
no mouth


In 2004 Greg Rouse, Shana Goffredi and Robert Vrijenhoek named a genus that shouldn't work.

Osedax — the name means bone-devourer — lives on whale skeletons on the deep sea floor. The adult females have no mouth and no gut at all. What they have instead is a root system: a branching, blood-supplied network that grows down into the bone, carrying symbiotic bacteria that break the bone down from inside.

The animal doesn't eat. It roots, like something between a worm and a small tree, into the skeleton of something enormous that died above it.

And the males never grow up. Dozens of them — tiny, paedomorphic, arrested partway through development — live inside the female's own tube, doing the one job they are there for.

Every clause of that is a small horror in English, and not one of it is a problem. It is a lineage that found a food source nobody else could reach, and built a body that could get at it. Read from inside, it's just competent.

You are not looking at a violation. You are looking at somebody's job.

The deep-sea anglerfish is the one everybody has heard about, usually told as a joke.

A male, far smaller than the female, finds her in the dark, bites on, and fuses. Tissues join. The two circulatory systems merge into one. He never leaves. It is the only case in nature of two vertebrates becoming, permanently, a single joined body.

Here is the part that isn't a joke, and it is the reason this zine exists.

In 2020 Jeremy Swann, Stephen Holland, Malte Petersen, Theodore Pietsch and Thomas Boehm looked at the genomes and found what the fusion cost. Species whose males attach temporarily have lost functional aicda — the gene behind antibody maturation. Species whose males attach permanently go further, some losing functional rag genes altogether, which abolishes the somatic shuffling of antigen receptors that is the defining hallmark of adaptive immunity.

Your immune system's entire job is telling you from not-you, and rejecting the not-you. So:

To be permanently joined to another body, they gave up the machinery that draws the line between self and other. They did not solve rejection. They dismantled the thing that rejects.

The border you are so sure of is a piece of equipment. It can be traded. Somebody did.

becomes a town


Nothing triggers the reflex like a corpse. So let's take the biggest one there is.

A whale dies and sinks. Down there, food arrives as a slow drizzle of scraps from far above — and now, all at once, forty tonnes of it lands in one place. Craig Smith and Amy Baco, reviewing the whole field in 2003, put the scale plainly: the sediment beneath a sunken carcass gets an initial pulse of organic matter equivalent to roughly 2,000 years of the normal background supply.

Then a town builds itself, in three overlapping stages.

Months to years. The mobile scavengers — sleeper sharks, hagfish, rat-tails — strip soft tissue at 40 to 60 kilograms a day.

Months to years. Enrichment opportunists move onto the enriched sediment and the exposed bones: dense assemblages of polychaetes and crustaceans, up to 40,000 animals per square metre.

Decades. The sulphophilic stage. Bone lipids break down without oxygen and give off sulphide; bacteria make a living out of the sulphide; a large, trophically complex community assembles on top of that. Smith and Baco report a mean of 185 macrofaunal species on a large skeleton at this stage — higher local diversity than any other hard surface in the deep sea.

Across the world's whale falls, 407 species. Twenty-one of them are known from nowhere else on Earth.

The thing you were taught was the end of a body is, down there, one of the most generous events that ever happens.

Go back over the three of them and ask what they had in common. It wasn't danger — none of them can hurt you. It wasn't dirt — the deep sea is one of the cleanest places on the planet.

What they share is distance from one particular body plan.

Mouths belong on faces. Bodies end at the skin. The dead are separate from the living. Eating is done with a gut. These aren't laws of nature. They are the specifications of one animal, generalised into a template — and the ick is what fires when something falls outside it.

That template has two settings, and this collection has been picking at both:

Anthronormative — the assumption that the human arrangement is the correct arrangement for a body.

Neuronormative — the assumption that one kind of mind is the correct kind, and other kinds are that kind gone wrong.

Where it lands

The same reflex,
aimed at us


Now the part this zine was actually written for.

That reflex — the one that fires at a rooted worm and a fused fish — does not stay in the ocean. It gets pointed at people, and it does an enormous amount of work.

It fires at a feeding tube. At drooling. At an adult in incontinence pads. At a stim that isn't the socially cleared kind — the loud one, the wet one, the one with hands. At a communication device that speaks in a voice somebody decided was unpleasant. At bodies that need help with the parts of being alive that everyone has agreed to pretend are private.

Nobody says disgusting out loud. They don't have to. The reflex does its work in the face, in the half-step back, in the seat that stays empty, in the invitation that doesn't come, in the tone of the assessment paperwork.

Martha Nussbaum gave this its name in 2004: projective disgust. We take what we cannot stand about being animal — that we leak, decay, depend, and die — and we load it onto a group of people, who then function as a buffer between us and our own bodies. Push them out and the animal facts feel further away.

Which is why the ick is not a matter of taste, and why we are not asking anyone to find worms charming. Disgust is how a border gets enforced without anyone having to defend it. It doesn't argue. It just refuses, and then it acts hurt if you ask it to explain.

The reflex that ruled out the bone-eating worm is the reflex that empties the seat next to us. It never learned there was a difference.

Two words, two jobs

There's a word next door to this one, and it has already been reclaimed.

In Wyrd & Weird, Helen Edgar follows weird back to Old English wyrd — becoming, fate, a web held from every side — and shows Autistic and disabled communities running the drift backwards, taking the word up as a name rather than a verdict. Weird is ours now. People wear it.

Gross has not been taken, and it works differently.

Weird is a judgement about categories: you don't fit the box. It can be answered with pride, because pride is also a claim about where you belong.

Gross isn't a claim at all. It's a body refusing another body. You can't be proud at it, because it doesn't stay to listen — it has already turned away.

So this one doesn't get reclaimed. It gets disarmed: shown to be learned, shown to be arbitrary, shown to be doing political work it never admitted to. You don't march under it. You just stop letting it decide who's in the room.

This argument has several cheap versions. Naming them so we don't get mistaken for one.

Not"actually it's beautiful." That just swaps one aesthetic verdict for another and keeps the judge's chair warm. The worm doesn't need to be pretty. It needs to be left alone.
Not"gross but useful to humans." Hagfish slime is being studied for fibres; whale-fall bacteria for enzymes. Fine — but usefulness is the extraction frame, and the zine before this one is about where that leads.
Notyour sensory aversion is a prejudice. If a texture, a smell, a sound or a wet thing on your hands sends you through the roof — that is distaste, it is bodily, and none of this argument is pointed at it. Autistic and otherwise neurodivergent sensory responses are real, they are not bigotry, and you do not owe anybody an apology or an exposure programme for them.
Nota blank slate. We are not claiming you arrived with no positions on the world. You arrived with a nervous system that had plenty, and the oldest of them are older than our species. What is learned is the contamination logic laid over the top, not the body underneath it.
Notdisgust is never useful. It plainly has a job — some of it tracks real contamination. The claim is narrower: its objects are learned, it overshoots wildly, and it should never be trusted as evidence about a person.
Notyou're bad for feeling it. It was installed in you before you could consent. Nobody is guilty of a reflex. You are only answerable for what you do in the two seconds after.
Notdisabled people are deep-sea creatures. We are not anyone's metaphor. The shared thing is the reflex and the border it draws — not the bodies on either side of it.

Go back to the worm.

It is still rooted in the bone. It still has no mouth. The males are still small and still in her tube. Not one fact about it has moved since page four.

If it reads differently now — and it might — then the thing that changed was on this side of the glass. That's the whole demonstration. The verdict was never in the water. It was in the frame, that part of the frame was learned, and a learned thing can be widened.

Your body may still not want to touch it. That's allowed, and it always was — that part isn't the frame, it's you, and it has a history in it older than our species. Not wanting to touch something is not the same as ruling it out of the world. The whole argument is the gap between those two.

And widening it is not a favour you do the deep sea. The deep sea is fine. It's a favour you do yourself, and everyone who has ever been on the far side of somebody's flinch — which, at some point, is everybody.

Because here is the thing the reflex is actually protecting you from, and it's not the worm: you are an animal. You leak, you decay, you need enormous amounts of help, and one day you will be food for something. Every one of those is also true of the whale, and the whale's version fed a town for thirty years.

The atoms doing all of this were made in stars. That part is true of the worm, the anglerfish, the whale, and you — the same calcium, the same carbon, the same everything, arranged into a few thousand ways of being alive, not one of which is the correct one.

The universe has never once flinched at any of us. That reflex is ours, we were taught it, and we can put it down.

The Ick Is a Border is Zine No. 33 in the Stimpunks Star Stuff series. It is a house zine and a deliberate companion to Wyrd & Weird (28), Helen Edgar's guest zine on weird — the word this community did reclaim. Weird is hers and the reclamation is hers; this zine takes the neighbouring word, gross, which works differently and is disarmed rather than worn. It extends Every Nervous System (27) and The Council of All Beings (25) into the territory of disgust, and continues the account of constructed lines begun in The Lines We Drew (9). Written after The Skeleton That Skipped Bone (32), for the same young person, whose marine biology special interest is the reason both exist.

Corrected after publication — and the correction is the important part. The first published version of this zine argued that the ick is learned, full stop. Helen Edgar, who taught children with profound and multiple learning disabilities for twenty years, read it and pointed out that it presumes a cognitive, intellectualising response — and that pre-term babies, and the young people she has worked with, plainly have an ick without one. She is right, and the literature is unambiguous. Rozin's own framework separates distaste — a chemosensory rejection tied to a thing's actual properties, producing the highly conserved "gape face," present at birth and observed in utero — from disgust proper, which Rozin describes as ideationally based and contamination-sensitive, and which you can feel about a cockroach without tasting one. The strongest evidence for how deep the first one runs is Jacob Steiner's (1973) observations of the gustofacial response in anencephalic newborns, who produce it without most of a higher brain: the response does not require a cortex, and therefore cannot be an opinion. Spread 3 now makes that distinction before the argument starts, and the argument is explicitly scoped to the ideational kind. Helen's second point is the one that goes deepest and is now in the zine's own voice: we are not blank slates — that is the point of star stuff; we have history in us. A response conserved across species and present before birth is exactly that history, and the earlier draft was, in effect, arguing against this collection's own premise. Autistic and otherwise neurodivergent sensory aversion is distaste, not prejudice, and spread 11 now says so in a refusal.

Held honestly. Rozin and Fallon's account is a theory of disgust, not the only one, and the claim made here is the modest one their evidence supports: the objects of disgust are substantially learned and culturally variable, and the response overshoots any physical fact. That some disgust responses track genuine pathogen risk is not disputed. The whale-fall figures are means and estimates from a review of a small, poorly sampled set of sites — Smith and Baco say so themselves — and should be read as order-of-magnitude. The anglerfish immune losses vary by species and are not uniform across the group; "gave up the line between self and other" is our phrasing of a genetic finding, and adaptive immunity is not the whole of self/non-self discrimination. A note on a familiar quotation: "dirt is matter out of place" is widely attributed to Mary Douglas's Purity and Danger (1966), and she did make it famous — but it is not her coinage. It appears unreferenced in her first edition and is credited in later editions to Lord Chesterfield without a source; the earliest located use is an 1853 address by Lord Palmerston. We have not used the line as hers, and neither should anyone else. Finally: the ethics do not come from the biology. That the ocean is full of arrangements we find upsetting is not why anyone deserves welcome — as about.html puts it, we are noticing a rhyme, not collecting a proof.

The star stuff is Carl Sagan's, and the SN 1006 remnant on every Stimpunks page. The universe doesn't pathologize its own variation — and it has never once found any of us disgusting.
