The Skeleton That Skipped Bone is Zine No. 32 in the Stimpunks Star Stuff series, and a deliberate companion and counter-song to Bone Song (1) — which opens this collection on piezoelectric bone, and which this zine answers with a vertebrate that has none. It is also a second visit to the argument in Five Times a Crab, Seven Times Not (31): that a lineage leaving a trait is a different fact from a lineage never having arrived at it. It extends the naming of buried verdicts begun in A Field Guide to Nervous Systems (FG 5) and The Lines We Drew (9). It was written for a young person in our community whose special interest is sharks. It is theirs.

Held honestly. The secondary-loss reading of the chondrichthyan skeleton is the direction the current evidence points, and it is a live area rather than a closed one — Brazeau and colleagues present Minjinia as reviving and supporting that view, not as settling it. "No true bone" means no endochondral bone: chondrichthyans do mineralise, extensively, and the tesserae are real mineral; some rays carry bone-like tissue in dermal denticles and thorns, which is an active question in the literature. The reasons a lineage would shed bone are not established here and we have not claimed any. We have not put a number on how many sharks the cartilage trade killed, because we could not verify one in a primary source; what is documented is that the premise was false and the product did not work. And the ethics do not come from the biology. That the universe built more than one skeleton is not why a person deserves welcome — as about.html puts it, we are noticing a rhyme, not collecting a proof.
