Verbatim from it: the “81 operational taxonomic units…477 morphological characters…one of the most extensive phylogenetic analyses of sauropod dinosaurs” and “the famous genus Brontosaurus is considered valid by our quantitative approach” (abstract); “separation is somewhat arbitrary, in particular in paleontology, where no tests exist for the biological species concept,” “subjectivity of these interpretations is especially great. Therefore, a quantitative approach was developed to limit this subjectivity,” “Character changes amount to 12 between A. ajax and A. louisae, and eleven between D. carnegii and D. hallorum. Therefore, a minimum of 13 changes is herein considered necessary for generic separation,” “A minimum of six differences is thus considered enough for species-level separation,” “a wider margin is preferred herein in order to be more cautious,” and “The precise numbers established here (six and 13 changes) cannot be applied to any other analysis, even of the same clade” (methods). The dissimilarity figures — same genus below 0.181, different genera 0.222 and higher within Diplodocinae — are theirs. The Riggs summary quoted on spread two, “usually considered insufficient to justify generic distinction,” is Tschopp et al.'s characterisation of Riggs (1903), not Riggs' own words; we have not read Riggs, E. S., “Structure and relationships of opisthocoelian dinosaurs: Apatosaurus Marsh” (Field Columbian Museum, 1903) at the primary. Marsh's naming dates (1877, 1879) are from the paper's Table 1.
The appeal. Case 3700, under Articles 78.1 and 81.1 of the Code, sought to replace Diplodocus longus Marsh, 1878 with D. carnegii Hatcher, 1901 as type species of Diplodocus. The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature declined: Opinion 2425, Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature 75 (2018), Diplodocus longus maintained as the type species. Taken from the Commission's own case listing. We have not read the Opinion itself, so nothing here is claimed about the Commission's reasoning or any vote — the argument on spread seven is that a numbered, citable ruling exists at all, not what it says. The precedent the 2015 paper cites, the Cetiosaurus case accepted in 2014, is theirs.
The feathers. Alan H. Turner, Peter J. Makovicky & Mark A. Norell, “Feather Quill Knobs in the Dinosaur Velociraptor,” Science 317 (2007), doi:10.1126/science.1145076. Paywalled and not read at the primary, so this zine states only the paper's own finding as its title gives it — quill knobs on the forearm of Velociraptor mongoliensis, the anchor points for large feathers in living birds. Counts of knobs or reconstructed feathers circulate in press coverage and are deliberately not used here.
The nest. Oviraptor philoceratops was named by Henry Fairfield Osborn in 1924. The correction runs through Norell et al., “A theropod dinosaur embryo and the affinities of the Flaming Cliffs dinosaur eggs,” Science 266, 779–782 (1994), and Norell, Clark, Chiappe & Dashzeveg, “A nesting dinosaur,” Nature 378, 774–776 (1995). Both are cited from their bibliographic records, not read at the primary. Note the care spread eight takes: the brooding specimen described in 1995 is an oviraptorid later named Citipati osmolskae, not Osborn's 1924 animal itself — what the two papers establish is that eggs of that type from those beds are oviraptorid and that oviraptorids sat on their own clutches. The popular “the very specimen was proved innocent” telling is tidier than the record and is not made here.
The size and the gigantism. Apatosaurus louisae at 41.3 t and Supersaurus vivianae at 35–40 m are given in Tschopp et al.'s introduction, citing Campione & Evans (2012) and Benson et al. (2014); rounded here to “around 41 tonnes.” The cascade argument and the sentence “there is currently no direct evidence on sauropod food and food processing” are from P. Martin Sander and sixteen co-authors, “Biology of the sauropod dinosaurs: the evolution of gigantism,” Biological Reviews 86, 117–155 (2011). Read at the open-access full text, not end to end.
The bone. Piezoelectricity in bone is Iwao Yasuda's, from the 1950s, later extended by Bassett and colleagues — the founding fact of this whole project, argued at No. 1. That a sauropod's living bone was piezoelectric is an inference, not a measurement: fossil bone has lost its collagen, and nobody has squeezed a living Apatosaurus. The claim is that it was bone, of collagen and mineral, and did what bone does. Calcium and phosphorus originate in stellar nucleosynthesis and supernovae; that much is settled, and the “still in circulation” line is ours.
The dissent. Donald Prothero, “Is ‘Brontosaurus’ Back? Not So Fast!” (Columbia University Press blog, August 2015) is cited as a named public dissent existing, which is the only work spread six asks of it. A widely-quoted line about there being no “genus-o-meter” traces only to news coverage and is deliberately not used, per this repo's rule that aggregators are leads and not citations.

What this deliberately does not re-argue
No. 40 Five Sigma owns thresholds of evidence — how sure you must be before claiming a discovery, and why the bar should scale with the stakes. This zine is about a boundary of kind, not of confidence, and spread five marks the join rather than restating it. No. 9 The Lines We Drew owns the argument that a category boundary is imposed from a vantage point and can be redrawn; this piece takes the next step and asks what an imposed boundary owes you when it is drawn honestly. Too Good to Check owns how a story gets smoother than its science, which is why the Oviraptor telling above is deliberately the awkward version. Who Is Holding the Candle owns epistemic injustice.
A method, not a proof. A hundred and forty years of sauropod taxonomy knows nothing about any of us and demonstrates nothing about any of us. What it demonstrates is what a category looks like when the people drawing it are willing to show their working, name their instrument's limits, publish the objections, and lose an appeal in public. We are not asking science to be gentler with us. We are asking the paperwork to be as honest as the paper.
