Sukhareva. Daniel A. Sher & Jenny L. Gibson, “Pioneering, prodigious and perspicacious: Grunya Efimovna Sukhareva's life and contribution to conceptualising autism and schizophrenia,” European Child & Adolescent Psychiatry 32, 475–490 (2023), doi:10.1007/s00787-021-01875-7 — read at the open-access full text, and the source for Moscow, for the hospital-school founded in 1921, for the six boys, for the 1951 Pavlovian Sessions and the 1955 self-censorship, and for the four-part account of her obscurity (gender, Jewish identity, Russian nationality, Russian- and German-language publication). The Russian original is in Questions of Pedology and Child Psychoneurology (1925); the German in the Monatsschrift für Psychiatrie und Neurologie (1926); the English is Sula Wolff's translation, European Child & Adolescent Psychiatry 5, 119–132 (1996), cited from its bibliographic record, not read. The 1927 companion paper on girls is Simmonds & Sukhareva (2020). Her dates — 11 November 1891, Kiev; 26 April 1981, Moscow — are from biographical records rather than a primary document.
The Kiev error, kept on spread four. Irina Manouilenko & Susanne Bejerot, “Sukhareva—Prior to Asperger and Kanner,” Nordic Journal of Psychiatry 69(6), 1761–1764 (2015), describes her as “Kiev-based.” Read at the abstract and bibliographic record only. We do not know whether the paper elaborates; what we can say is that the shorthand circulates, that a first draft of this zine repeated it, and that Sher & Gibson and the 2025 centenary review both place the 1925 work in Moscow. The ages of the six boys are the one place our two best sources disagree — Sher & Gibson give two to fourteen, the centenary review gives ten and a half to thirteen — so no age range is stated in this zine.
Payne. Cecilia H. Payne, Stellar Atmospheres (Harvard Observatory Monograph No. 1, 1925). The line that the enormous abundance of hydrogen and helium is “almost certainly not real” is quoted from secondary reproductions and not read at the monograph; a page number (186) circulates and is deliberately not cited here, because we have not seen the page. Russell's 1929 restatement, his “clearly impossible,” his “very gratifying agreement” with her, and the figure that his paper had drawn more than three times her citations by 1965 all come from Elizabeth Landau, “A century ago, pioneering astrophysicist Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin showed us what stars are made of,” Smithsonian Magazine, 19 March 2025 — attributed on spread five as Smithsonian's count, because we have not run it. Otto Struve's “undoubtedly the most brilliant Ph.D. thesis ever written in astronomy” is from Otto Struve & Velta Zebergs, Astronomy of the 20th Century (Macmillan, 1962), cited from that book's record and secondary quotation, not read at the book.
Leavitt. The period–luminosity relation appeared in Harvard College Observatory Circular 173 (1912), issued under director Edward Pickering's name and opening with the statement that it “has been prepared by Miss Leavitt.” That sourcing is carried over from No. 41, which owns the fuller account. Gösta Mittag-Leffler wrote in 1925 intending to nominate her for the Nobel and was told by Harlow Shapley that she had died in 1921; the prize is not awarded posthumously and no nomination was ever made. An earlier draft of this piece dated the letter to 1924 and called the gap three years; both were wrong.
Herschel and the medal. Caroline Herschel received the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1828; the next woman to receive it was Vera Rubin, in 1996. Taken from the Society's own history of women at the RAS, which states the gap, rather than from a biography page that does not. Her eight comets and her catalogue work are given from biographical records and are not the load-bearing part of the spread.
Bell Burnell. A. Hewish, S. J. Bell, J. D. H. Pilkington, P. F. Scott & R. A. Collins, “Observation of a Rapidly Pulsating Radio Source,” Nature 217, 709–713 (1968) — cited from its bibliographic record; the paper is not open and was not read here. The period, 1.3372795 ± 0.0000020 s, and the authorship order are from that record. The 96 feet of chart paper is her own figure, given in her accounts of the discovery; the quarter-inch of chart and the switch to a faster recorder are from the University of Cambridge's published account in her words. The 1974 Nobel Prize in Physics went to Antony Hewish and Martin Ryle.
Cannon. Joined the Harvard College Observatory in 1896; first woman to receive the National Academy of Sciences' Henry Draper Medal, 1931; turned over her 1932 Ellen Richards Prize to the American Astronomical Society to found the Annie J. Cannon Award, whose first recipient in 1934 was Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin; appointed William Cranch Bond Astronomer at Harvard in 1938, retiring in 1940. An earlier draft merged the medal she received with the award she funded into one sentence, which made her sound honoured in a way she was not; they are two separate things and are kept apart here.
Rossiter and Gage. Margaret W. Rossiter, “The Matthew Matilda Effect in Science,” Social Studies of Science 23(2), 325–341 (1993), doi:10.1177/030631293023002004, cited from its record. Matilda Joslyn Gage's Woman as Inventor circulated as a tract in 1870 and was expanded for the North American Review in 1883; not read at either. The Matthew effect is Robert K. Merton's (1968).
Halley. The 1705 computation, the 1531/1607/1682 identification and the correct prediction of the 1758 return, and the statement that appearances have been linked to observations going back more than 2,000 years, are from NASA's 1P/Halley page. The specific identification of the 240 BCE passage in the Chinese records is the standard one in the cometary literature and is not sourced here to a primary; NASA's page does not give it.
The criteria. The DSM-5's Criterion C for autism spectrum disorder — symptoms “must be present in the early developmental period (but may not become fully manifest until social demands exceed limited capacities, or may be masked by learned strategies in later life)” — is quoted from published reproductions of the criteria, not from the manual. The reading of it on spread nine is ours and the American Psychiatric Association would not endorse it.
The physics. Light-travel times are standard: about 8 minutes 20 seconds from the Sun, about 4.2 light-years to Proxima Centauri, about 2.5 million to Andromeda. That elements heavier than hydrogen and helium are produced in stars and dispersed when they die is settled stellar nucleosynthesis, and is the founding fact of this whole project — argued at No. 2.

The structure was reworked for this collection — the light-travel fact runs through every spread rather than opening and closing the piece — and the citations were re-derived, which is where the Kiev, Leavitt, chart-paper and Cannon corrections came from. The argument, the astronomers and the 1925 pairing are hers.
What this deliberately does not re-argue
No. 41 A Conquering Gaze from Nowhere owns Leavitt in full, together with Haraway's argument that a view from nowhere cannot measure distance even in principle; spread five gives her one line and points there. No. 10 The Dead Stars Still Reach Us owns light outliving its source, which is the same fact facing the other way. No. 9 The Lines We Drew owns the constructed category. Too Good to Check owns the smoothed retelling — which is why the Bell Burnell spread insists she is on the paper, and why the Kiev error stayed on spread four. Who Is Holding the Candle owns epistemic injustice. A Promise, Not a Finding owns the naturalistic fallacy.
A method, not a proof. Nothing about the finite speed of light demonstrates anything about a nervous system, and no measured delay in a scientific record establishes that any particular person was wronged. The physics is not offered as the cause of anything here either — it supplies the shape of one confusion and nothing else. What erased Sukhareva was misogyny, antisemitism, Soviet politics and the languages the committees read, and spreads three, four, seven and eight say so in those words rather than letting the metaphor carry it. What the physics supplies is one honest distinction, held steady: the moment a thing exists and the moment it is written down are different moments, and only the second one is about us. Every count on spread five is a lead you can check, and we would rather be corrected in public than be tidy. The light was never wrong. The paperwork was late.
