The Demon-Haunted World is remembered as the skeptic's book. It is the one with the baloney detection kit in it, the one people reach for when someone is selling a crystal or a cure, and its subtitle — Science as a Candle in the Dark — has been quoted so often it has worn smooth.
The sentence in it that matters most to us is not about baloney at all. It is about two people who knew no science whatsoever.

It is two modes, not one. Not skepticism with a bit of enthusiasm attached — two whole ways of thinking, both required. They cohabit uneasily. Sagan does not say they harmonize or balance; he says they live together badly, which is a strange thing to say about the thing you are recommending. And his parents taught him — people one step out of poverty who knew almost nothing about the subject. The transmission did not come from an institution, from credentials, or from a curriculum.
It did not come from school either, and he is blunt about that on the very next page.
“I wish I could tell you about inspirational teachers in science from my elementary or junior high or high school days. But as I think back on it, there were none. There was rote memorization about the Periodic Table of the Elements, levers and inclined planes, green plant photosynthesis, and the difference between anthracite and bituminous coal. But there was no soaring sense of wonder, no hint of an evolutionary perspective, and nothing about mistaken ideas that everybody had once believed.”

It could hand him anthracite and bituminous coal and it could not hand him either mode — no wonder, and no mistaken ideas that everybody had once believed, which is the skeptical half stated as a curriculum item and left out of every curriculum. This is a familiar shape around here. The place with the resources delivered the surface and missed the substance, and the people with no standing at all delivered the real thing at the kitchen table.
The two uneasily cohabiting modes
Take either one away and you get something that still looks like thinking and reliably fails.
Wonder without skepticism is the subject of the other essay in this collection. It is how a forest-wide fungal network became settled fact in three of our own pieces: the finding rhymed with everything we believe, so nobody asked it a hard question. A story that fits gets less scrutiny, which is exactly when it needs more.
Skepticism without wonder fails differently and more quietly, because it never has to admit to being wrong about a fact — it is wrong about what the exercise is for. It arrives at the pleasure of the debunk, at correcting people as a hobby, at treating Myth! as a destination. And that failure mode is not hypothetical for a site like this one: the deficit literature about neurodivergent and disabled people is written almost entirely in the skeptical register, skeptical of us specifically, and remarkably little of it has ever been curious about us.
Why “uneasily” is the load-bearing word
The obvious reading of Sagan's sentence is that the two modes need moderating — be a bit skeptical, be a bit amazed, meet in the middle. That reading is wrong, and his son wrote the line that explains why. In the introduction to Cosmic Apprentice, Dorion Sagan reaches for Niels Bohr:

Check everything and the universe is stranger than you can currently imagine are both great truths, which means each one's opposite is also true and neither can be diluted into the other without ruining both. A half-skeptic is not moderate, they are careless. A half-wonderer is not sensible, they are incurious. You do not average them. You hold both at full strength and let them argue, permanently, and the friction is not a defect in the method — the friction is the method.
Uneasy is the correct state. A method that felt comfortable would have stopped checking.
The alembic
Dorion Sagan's own version of this braid is not skepticism and wonder but science and philosophy, and he gives it a chemist's metaphor. An alembic is the still — the vessel that separates a mixture into what it actually contains. Electrum is the natural alloy of gold and silver, valuable as itself rather than as either metal waiting to be refined out.

Not a defence of science against philosophy or the reverse — a claim that each is the cure for the other's characteristic poisoning. Philosophy left alone goes cloying: elegant, self-consistent, and about nothing. Science left alone goes compass-less, and Dorion is precise about the mechanism rather than gesturing at it. Not that scientists are corrupt. That the funding decides which questions get asked, and an institution whose relationship to open dissemination is “problematic at best” will keep producing true findings while losing the ability to say why any of them matter, or to publish the ones nobody paid for.
This is the argument our How We Got Here chains exist to make, and No. 40 makes it outright: particle physics demands five sigma, pre-registration and a published record of everything that did not work, while the interventions run on disabled children have historically demanded far less and been compulsory for somebody. The compass, missing.
Everything above can be misread as a complaint about science, and it is the opposite one. We are not asking for less evidence. We are asking for the parts that got left behind — the pre-registration, the blinding, the reported harms, the published nulls, the hedge the paper carried and the press release dropped.
Three things get mistaken for science and are its opposite: pseudoscience, which keeps none of the method; scientism, which keeps the authority and drops the practice; and the smoothed popular retelling, which files off every hedge because the tidy version travels further. Pointed at human beings, all three flatten exactly the variation the science elsewhere insists is real — and they do it with a citation attached, which is far harder to answer than a plain insult. If this page ever starts reading as anti-science, it has gone wrong.

That is Carl's two modes again in different clothes — the curiosity that goes looking, and the checking that keeps it honest — and the last clause is the one with teeth. Authority does not like to admit it is wrong. That is why a changelog that publishes our own errors with dates and names is not housekeeping and not humility theatre. It is the only available evidence that we are appealing to data rather than to our own standing.
Who is holding the candle
Now the passage that this page is named for, and the one that changed how we write.
Dorion arrives at it from a deliberately provocative direction — that in the calculus of writing genres, fiction is nonfiction and nonfiction is fiction — and the reason is not a paradox for its own sake:
“…the passive voice, ‘objective’ stance, anonymity, and depersonalization of the scientist and journalist betray the fundamental phenomenological reality that each of us has a specific perspective. All observations are made from distinct places and times, and in science no less than art or philosophy by particular individuals.”

The objective voice gives away the truth it means to hide, and it is unfaithful to the thing that actually happened. Somebody was somewhere, at a time, with a history and a funder and a hope about the result, and they looked. The grammar deletes them. What is left reads as though the finding arrived unaccompanied.
Sagan's candle is a good image precisely because a candle has to be carried. It does not illuminate a room evenly from nowhere. It is held, at some height, by somebody, and everything behind them stays dark.

So this is the argument underneath a house rule that otherwise looks like a style preference. We write about neurodivergent and disabled people in the first person plural — we, us, our — because it is true and the alternative is not. Third person here would not be neutrality. It would be a claim to be standing outside a room we are in fact sitting in, and Dorion's point is that the claim is unavailable to anyone, including the people best trained to make it.
There is no view from nowhere. There is only an unstated view from somewhere.
The same commitment runs through the small print. Helen Edgar's zines are hers and say so on their faces, in her voice, under a shared masthead — the masthead is collaborative, authorship is not. Every correction carries the name of whoever caught it, including the ones that were embarrassing to publish. The fact-check ledger records who checked what and on what date, because checked without a checker is exactly the deletion described above.
And it is why the sharpest sentence in Too Good to Check belongs to this page as much as that one: the primary source for an Autistic life is an Autistic person. That is not a slogan bolted onto a fact-checking rule. It is the fact-checking rule, applied where it costs something. Donna Haraway named the general case situated knowledges in 1988 and argued the harder half of it — that the honest alternative to a false objectivity is not anything goes but a stronger accountability, because a perspective you have declared is one somebody else can finally hold you to.
What this licenses, and what it refuses
Every argument on this page has a cheap version that sounds identical, and the cheap versions are common enough that leaving them unnamed would be negligent.
- Not relativism. “All observations are made by particular individuals” is a claim about where knowledge comes from, not about whether it can be wrong. Orion's Belt is at one depth or it isn't, and we were wrong about it in public.
- Not a licence to skip the check. It is the reverse: because we are in the room, our own findings need more scrutiny, not less. Every gate on this site exists because we write from a position.
- Not anti-science. The complaint is that the compass got lost and the hedges got filed off, and the remedy is more of the method rather than less of it.
- Not a rule that only insiders may speak. The claim is that everyone speaks from somewhere and should say where. Declaring a position is available to anybody; pretending not to have one is available to nobody.
- Not contempt for the passive voice. It has real uses, including where the actor genuinely doesn't matter. The failure is using it to make a positioned judgement look like a reading off a dial.
- Not resolved. The two modes still cohabit uneasily on this page and will keep doing so. That is the state Sagan described, and we have no plan for improving on it.
Two Sagans, one method
It is a nice accident that these two passages come from a father and a son, and it would be sentimental to make more of the inheritance than the pages support. They are not saying the same thing. Carl is describing how a method feels from inside — two habits pulling against each other, taught to a boy at a kitchen table by people with no science between them. Dorion is describing what the method's official prose does to that boy once he grows up and writes it down: files off the pulling, deletes the table, deletes the parents, and reports the finding as though it had arrived by itself.
Put the two together and you get something usable. Keep both modes at full strength, and keep the person holding them visible. The candle and the hand. Everything on this site — the citations, the ledger, the published errors, the credits, the first person plural — is one or the other of those, and mostly both.
The universe doesn't pathologize its own variation. Neither does an observer who has admitted they are standing somewhere.

On the Bohr line. “The opposite of a great truth is another great truth” reaches us through Dorion Sagan, who introduces it with “as Niels Bohr impressed.” We have primary-confirmed that Dorion wrote it; we have not primary-confirmed Bohr saying it, and the usual source given elsewhere is a son's recollection rather than Bohr's own writing. So it is attributed here as quoted-by, which is what we can actually stand behind. This is failure mode one caught in advance rather than after publication, and it is an open item.
