A seed is a little package with a plan inside


You put it in the dirt. You give it water. You wait a few days.

Usually a small green thing comes up.

Usually.

For the grown-up reading this

This zine follows one settled thing and does not wander from it: seed dormancy — the fact that many seeds will not germinate simply because conditions are warm and wet, and require a specific prior event first.

Large type is for the child. These boxes hold the species, the figures, the papers and the places the evidence runs out. You should not have to leave the page to answer “is that really true?”

Nothing happens

Some seeds just sit there


You water them. You check every day. Nothing.

It is easy to think something has gone wrong. That the seed is dead, or that you did it wrong.

The seed is not broken. The seed is waiting.

And it is waiting for something in particular.

For the grown-up reading this

Dormancy is not the same as death, and it is not the same as being slow. A dormant seed is alive and holding, and it has a release condition. Botanists sort those conditions into kinds — physical, physiological, morphological and combinations — and the next four spreads take four of them, one at a time.

Waiting for cold

Some seeds are waiting for a whole winter


They will not come up in warm ground. They need to be cold, for a long time, first.

Weeks of it. Months of it.

Then when it warms up again, then they grow.

Think about how clever that is.

A seed that came up in autumn would meet the winter as a tiny soft shoot, and the winter would kill it. So it waits, and comes up in spring, when there is a whole summer in front of it.

This is physiological dormancy broken by chilling — the thing gardeners do deliberately as cold stratification, putting seed in damp sand in a fridge for weeks before sowing.

Note what the requirement is actually measuring: not time, but the arrival of a season. The seed is not counting days. It is waiting for evidence that winter has happened and is over.

Waiting for fire

Some seeds are waiting for a fire


This one is hard to believe the first time.

There are pine trees whose cones are glued shut. Sealed with resin, like sticky tape, tight enough to hold for years.

The seeds are inside, alive, in the dark.

The glue melts when a fire goes past. The cone opens. The seeds fall out onto ground that has just been cleared of everything.

The thing that looks like the end of the forest is the thing the seed has been waiting for.

This is serotiny. Cones are held closed by a resin bond that requires heat to break; the seeds are released onto a seedbed with the canopy gone, the competition burned off and nutrients in the ash.

Two things we are not doing with this. We are not telling a child that fire is good — a wildfire is a catastrophe for the people and animals in it, and this zine says so on spread eleven. And we are not implying every pine does this. Serotiny is one strategy among many, in particular species, in fire-prone places.

Waiting for a journey

Some seeds are waiting to be eaten


A bird eats a berry. The soft part is the bird's dinner. The seed inside is not.

The seed goes all the way through the bird, gets scrubbed and scratched on the way, and comes out somewhere else entirely — in a small pile of exactly what a seed needs.

The seed did not get lost. That was the trip.

Some seeds hardly grow at all unless they have been on it.

For the grown-up reading this

Gut passage does two things: it moves the seed away from the parent plant, and the acid and abrasion thin the seed coat, which is a route into breaking physical dormancy.

The strength of the effect varies enormously by species and by disperser, and “hardly grow at all” in the large type is doing honest work for a range that runs from required to merely helpful. This is the softest claim in the zine and it is marked here rather than hedged into unreadability upstairs.

Waiting to be worn down

Some seeds have a shell that has to wear out first


The shell is so hard that water cannot get in at all. And a seed cannot start without water.

So it has to be worn thin. By sand. By rain. By tumbling down a stream. By years of being knocked about.

Only then does the water get in, and only then does the seed start.

Nobody is doing this to the seed on purpose. It just takes as long as it takes.

Physical dormancy: a water-impermeable seed coat that has to be breached before imbibition can begin. Gardeners short-circuit it by scarification — nicking the coat with a file or soaking in hot water.

Worth saying aloud to a child who has just heard four different waits: these are four different mechanisms, not four moods. Each one is a physical fact about a particular seed coat or embryo.

Why

The waiting is not slowness. It is the instruction.


Look at what each seed is waiting for, and then look at where it lives.

The seed that waits for cold lives where winter would kill a little shoot.

The seed that waits for fire lives where fire comes, and where the ground afterwards is the best ground there will ever be.

The seed that waits for a journey lives under a parent tree, in its shade, where there is no room.

Every one of them is waiting for the moment when starting would actually work.

None of them is behind. They are all exactly on time — for their own instructions.

This is the spread the zine is built to arrive at, and it is a statement about fit between a requirement and an environment rather than about virtue. Dormancy is adaptive where conditions are seasonal or unpredictable, and it is costly where they are not — which is why plenty of species do not do it at all.

A requirement is not a defect. That sentence is doing a lot of work in a household where a child is being measured against a schedule, and this zine will go no further with it than the seeds do. See the refusals.

The longest wait

One seed waited two thousand years


People digging at a place called Masada, on a cliff by the Dead Sea, found some old date seeds.

Really old. Scientists can measure how old a thing is, and these were from about two thousand years ago.

Somebody planted one anyway.

It grew.

It came up, and it kept growing, and it grew like any ordinary date palm. They called it Methuselah, after somebody in a very old story who lived a very long time.

Then they planted more of them. Those grew too.

Sallon and colleagues, Science (2008): an ancient date seed (Phoenix dactylifera L.) excavated from Masada and radiocarbon-dated to the first century Common Era was germinated, and its growth over 26 months was “compatible with normal date seedlings propagated from modern seeds.”

The exact claim matters and we have kept it. The paper calls it “the oldest, directly dated, viable seed” — directly dated is the load-bearing phrase, and it quietly rules out older claims that rest on the age of the surrounding deposit rather than the seed itself. Longer-lived claims circulate; this is the one with the seed's own carbon behind it.

Seven more ancient seeds, radiocarbon dated from the fourth century BCE to the second century CE, were later germinated and their genomes sequenced.

Two thousand years is not what dormancy is for. No date palm is adapted to wait a millennium; this is a preservation accident of an extremely dry cliff-top, and it is on the page because it is astonishing, not because it is typical.

Waiting is not failing


Some seeds come up in three days.

Some need a winter first. Some need a fire. Some need a whole journey through somebody.

Not one of them is broken, and not one of them is being difficult.

They need something to happen first. That is not a fault. That is the instruction.

If you know somebody who needs something to happen first — a bit of quiet, a warning, a person they know, more time — you know a seed.

That last line is the only sentence in this zine that steps from seeds toward people, and it is written as a likeness offered, not a finding. Everything above it is botany.

Refusals · for the grown-up reading this

Not:


Not“Good things come to those who wait.” The seed is not being patient and is not being rewarded for it. Dormancy is a mechanism, not a virtue — and a child who is waiting for something that is not coming has not been given a moral, they have been given a delay.
NotFire as a happy ending. Serotiny is real and a wildfire is still a catastrophe for the animals and people caught in it. A seed adapted to fire is not an argument that fire is good, and this zine will not let a beautiful mechanism launder a disaster.
NotSlower as better. Plenty of seeds germinate straight away and that is exactly right for where they live. The claim is not that waiting is superior; it is that needing a condition first is a fact about a mechanism and its place, not a flaw in the seed.
NotA finding about children. Every claim here is about seeds. Spread ten offers one likeness and says on its own face that it is a likeness. The argument about human developmental pace is Stimpunks', made on human evidence, and it is linked rather than borrowed.
NotTwo thousand years as the point. The Masada date is astonishing and it is an accident of an unusually dry cliff-top, not what dormancy is for. Printing it as the headline would make a preservation fluke stand in for a common and much more interesting mechanism.

A seed that will not start is not a seed that has failed. It is a seed whose instruction has not been met yet — and the instruction is usually about the place, not about the seed.

What does this child need to happen first — and is anybody arranging it, or just waiting?

Which requirements in your house get read as preferences, and which get read as instructions?

When something has not started yet, how long do you give it before you call it a problem?

What has been waiting in you for a condition nobody has met?

The four kinds of waiting — physiological dormancy broken by chilling, serotiny, gut passage, and physical dormancy in a water-impermeable coat — are settled textbook seed biology and are stated here at that level. No spread carries a figure for any of them, because the honest general statement is that the numbers vary by species and we have not read a specific study for any one plant. That is a real limit on this zine and it is the reason the fire spread names no pine and the journey spread names no bird.

What we held back

The softest claim is on spread six, and it is marked there: “some seeds hardly grow at all unless they have been on it” covers a range that runs from gut passage required to gut passage merely helps, and which end a species sits at is a question we did not answer. We named no record older than Masada, deliberately: longer-lived germination claims circulate, and the ones we met rest on the age of surrounding material rather than on the seed's own carbon. Sallon's phrase directly dated is precisely the distinction, and we have kept it rather than reaching for a bigger number.

What this deliberately does not re-argue

No. 91 is this zine's companion and its opposite: that one is about pace — how long a thing takes, and how the pond moves it — and this one is about conditions, which is a different claim and needs the other one on the shelf beside it rather than folded in. Stimpunks owns the human argument at Developmental Pace, whose own refusals say pace is not simply slower is better and that survivability depends on context; spread eleven agrees with them on purpose.

A rhyme, not a proof. We are not claiming a child is like a seed. We are pointing at a large, ordinary, well-described class of living things for which not-starting-yet is a specification rather than a failure — and noticing how rarely anybody extends that reading to a person.
