Fifteen ways of resting among our Terran kin, sorted by what is doing the resting — and the catalogue does not converge. There is no standard way to rest. Not a standard amount, not a standard posture, not a standard organ, and in one case not even a standard measurement. An animal with no brain rests on a four-hour cycle with no day to answer to. A bird goes ten months without landing. A squirrel holds a body temperature below freezing. A seal skips weeks of REM and never pays it back. Lying still at night is an option. It was never the standard.
The sort is ours, and it came out of the entries rather than ahead of them. We began meaning to sort by how much, and that collapsed on contact with the literature — the numbers turn out to be the least reliable thing on the page, which is now an entry rather than an axis. We tried sorting by taxon, and it put a jellyfish and a nematode in different rooms for no reason that mattered. What varies cleanly is what carries the rest: a body with no centre to switch off, a body that cannot stop moving, a body shut down for a season, a body whose quantity we have mostly guessed at, and a body being held by something outside itself. None of these ranks above another, which is the whole reason it is a catalogue and not a ladder.
Three animals that rest without the organ the word usually assumes. Two of them have a nerve net and no brain at all; the third has 302 neurons and rests on a schedule set by its own development. All three meet the behavioural definition of sleep — quiescence, a raised arousal threshold, and a rebound afterwards if you take it away — which is the criterion that separates sleep from merely being still. The oldest resting animal we can point to has no ledger, and no clock either.
Three animals for whom stillness was never available, and who rest anyway — one hemisphere at a time, or in the glide between wingbeats, or hanging vertically in open water. The frigatebird and the swift both break the assumption that rest requires the motion to stop; the swift also breaks the assumption that a record is uniform, because some individuals in the same study never landed and others roosted for whole nights.
Three animals that rest for a duration no one asks them to justify — and in each case the interesting part is what the body does not pay. A bear goes half a year without weight-bearing movement and keeps its skeleton. A squirrel holds a core temperature below freezing and thaws unharmed. A fish seals itself in a cocoon of its own mucus and waits out a drought that may last years. Long rest is not intrinsically costly. It is costly in bodies that are not arranged for it.
Three animals where the quantity of rest is the thing in question — and the middle card is the one this guide would keep if it could keep only one. The famous twenty-hour bat is a single 1960s measurement at a single ambient temperature, on an unknown number of animals, and it falls to eleven hours in a cooler room. Roughly one per cent of mammal species have had their sleep measured at all. So when a table tells you what an animal's sleep is, the honest reading is often this is what somebody once recorded, once, in a box.
Three animals whose rest is not a capacity they have but a condition they enter — and in all three the work is done outside the body. A huddle reaches blood temperature while the air outside is nineteen below. A fish builds a mucus tent that costs it two and a half per cent of a day's energy and stops almost every parasite. An otter ties itself to the forest so that sleeping does not mean drifting. Give a body something to be held by and rest stops being a discipline.
Every card above this one carries three columns: a trait, what it sounds like, and what is actually the case. That table exists because a verdict had been reached about an animal and the verdict was wrong. These two have no verdict to overturn. One because nobody knows yet, and saying actually about an open question is not rigour but bluff. One because the misnaming was never a judgement passed on the organism — it was a convenience of ours, and the two people most associated with it both flagged it themselves. So the table is absent, and the absence is the argument.
Not a league table. There is no winner here. The elephant at two hours is not more efficient than the bat, and the bear is not more disciplined than the swift. Not a set of instructions. None of these animals is a model for a person, and the resemblances are rhymes rather than proofs. Not rest as maintenance. Nothing here is recharging in order to work better tomorrow. Hydra is not resting so it can divide on schedule; the division is what the resting is for, which is not the same thing. Not the tidy numbers. Where a figure is one old measurement in a warm box, this guide says so instead of printing it.
The Hydra and Cassiopea states are called sleep-like by the people who found them, and that hedge is kept — what is established is that they meet the behavioural criteria, not that a polyp experiences anything. The lungfish cocoon is living tissue (Science Advances, 2021) and whether it is antimicrobial is contested by a 2024 preprint that has not been reviewed; we name the challenge and lean on neither. The sperm whale's drift dives are a resting posture with both eyes closed and near-total unresponsiveness — whether that is bihemispheric sleep is suggested, not settled. And the widely circulated claim that sperm whales use exhaled bubbles as ballast during these dives appears only in content farms, so it is not here.
