There is no standard otter. Put a population under pressure and it fans out into specialists, each best at its own thing. Some carry a stone and some never do, and the ones with the stone keep their teeth. The support is legible in the skeleton. Love you down to your star stuff — and down to the stone you keep.

The Stone You Keep is a guest zine in the Stimpunks Star Stuff series, developed after Helen Edgar (Autistic Realms) from her essay Stimpunks Solidarity and Otters (2026), written from the otter cam that runs every Saturday at Solidarity Sesh. Helen's reading — the kept stone as a stim tool, solo play drifting into brief shared play, cave and watering hole at your own pace, bodily autonomy without apology — is the reason this zine exists. The rest framing follows Otters Already Know How to Rest (Stimpunks, 2026). It is a companion to Every Nervous System (27) and Every Creature's Own Sky (15), and sits alongside Only in Relation (29), also Helen's. Honesty note. The stone is described here only as the primary observations support it: a stone kept and reused across successive food items within a bout of feeding. The widely repeated claim that each otter keeps one favourite rock for years or for life, in a pouch under the left forearm, traces to popular retellings rather than to the primary literature, so it is not made here — the pouches and the reuse are real, the lifelong romance is not established. Likewise, rafting and kelp-anchored rest are well documented, while the image of otters sleeping hand-in-hand as an expression of affection is a story told about them rather than a finding. The Tinker result is a comparison between sites differing in food availability, not an experiment on a single population over time, and the diversification it reports is a response to scarcity — we draw no moral from scarcity itself. Nothing here claims the otters' arrangements justify ours; the universe does not owe us a precedent, and a resemblance is a rhyme, not a proof. The belonging claim does not rest on the otters. It rests on us, and it reaches all the way down.
The stone is a rock. It is also, for the otter that keeps it, the difference between eating and not, and between old age with teeth and without. Keep your stone. Love you down to your star stuff.
