Twelve cosmic eggs · a specimen sheet · an easter egg

Twelve eggs drawn for this site. One of them is the small door at the foot of every page; the other eleven are the ones we drew on the way, kept because each carries something we can check.


The cosmic egg — the universe as something that was closed and then opened — is one of the most widely repeated images people have. It is in the Rigveda as Hiraṇyagarbha, the golden womb; in the Ogdoad's egg at Hermopolis; in the Kalevala, where Ilmatar's eggs become the sky and the earth; in Pangu's shell, which takes eighteen thousand years to open; in Taʼaroa's, in the Society Islands; in the Dogon Amma; in Zoroastrian texts that use the egg as an analogy for the shape of the cosmos.

None of those is drawn on this page, and that is deliberate. These twelve are ours. We name the motif and leave the cosmologies to the people who hold them — the same line Field Guide No. 10 drew when it put five turtles people made in their own section with no reframe table, because running sounds like / actually over somebody's cosmology would be obscene. A borrowed shape is not a borrowed belief.

What every egg here has in common is the thing the whole site is about: something that looks like a single smooth object turns out, up close, to be made of variation — and the variation is not the flaw in it. Twelve drawings, twelve arguments, one of them load-bearing.

Where this form stops

A drawing is not evidence. Each egg below is a picture attached to a claim, and the picture proves nothing — the source line under each one is where the actual work is. Where a claim is contested or thin, the entry says so rather than letting a confident illustration carry it. That is the failure mode this collection was built against: a thing that rhymes too well gets believed on the strength of the rhyme.

The one on the door

This is the mark at the bottom of the front page, and it replaced an egg emoji on 14 August 2026.

An egg cracked open and lifted ajar, with sky inside instead of yolk. It began as a straightforward idea — make the crack a spiky profile — and that idea is wrong here, which is worth saying out loud on the page rather than quietly fixing.

We have already published the argument against it. No. 21, Not a Line grants that the spiky profile beat the single severity dial, then shows what it kept: it still plots peaks and troughs as distances from a flat expected baseline, frozen at one moment of assessment. A better chart is still a chart. Its spine runs line → spiky profile → constellation, and putting a celebratory spiky profile on the front page would have parked our door one step behind our own argument.

So the drawing keeps the jag and throws away the apparatus. There is no baseline and no grid — the two things that made the profile a measurement. A crack in a shell is jagged because that is how shells break, not because it is scoring anything, and there is no line running through it from which its peaks could be deviations. What is inside is a constellation: stars in no order, with no rank.

Four of these were the original proposals; seven were drawn afterwards to fill the sheet. None of them is on the door, and none of them is a lesser piece of work for it — an easter egg is a door that moved, not a standard that dropped.

The Yolk Is a Star

Unbroken. The star sits where the yolk goes, and five rays reach out through the shell — one in each of the house accents, one for each of the five collections that sort by register.

This is the most brand-like of the twelve and the least argumentative, which is why it is not the door. It says a star is inside this, and the whole site says that already. It survives shrinking better than anything else here, so if the mark ever needs to work at favicon size, this is the one that would.

The accents are Tailwind CSS v3's 400 ramp, verified against v3.4.17 — see the design system. The five registers are Star Stuff, Star Gazing, More Than Human, Kin, and Stars We Grew Up On.

The Ossicle Egg

No two plates alike, and that is the shell

Twelve interlocking plates, no two the same size, shape or hue. The picture is borrowed from an animal already in the collection: the leatherback has no bony carapace at all — just hundreds of small interlocking ossicles set in oily skin — and it is the deepest-diving reptile alive, recorded to 1,280 m, holding its body up to 18 °C above the water around it.

Every item on that list reads as a missing part, and together they are the animal's range. The shell holds because of the variation in it, not despite it.

The Monotropic Egg

Attention as a tunnel, not a spotlight

Contours nested down to a bright core. Monotropism describes attention pulled strongly into a few interests at a time, with a great deal of processing going into whatever is in the tunnel and correspondingly little to what is outside it — which reframes a long list of “deficits” as the predictable shape of that distribution rather than separate faults.

Drawn this way the shell is not a barrier. It is the outermost ring of one interest.

The Arrau Egg

The silence was ours

The giant South American river turtle, Podocnemis expansa, was filed for a very long time as a silent animal — until somebody brought a hydrophone. The recordings hold 2,122 sounds sorted into eleven types. Hatchlings vocalise from inside the egg, then in the open nest, then in the river; adult females vocalise while basking and nesting, and in the river the females were recorded coming and answering. It is the first evidence of post-hatching parental care in any turtle.

The animal was never silent. The silence was in the equipment, and in the assumption that made nobody go looking. That is the entire reason this egg is drawn with the call going out and an answer coming back.

The Collagen Egg

Press it and it answers in current

The founding fact of this site, drawn as a shell: bone is piezoelectric. Load it and it produces charge. Fukada and Yasuda measured it in 1957, and the skeleton you are sitting on is doing it right now.

And the part that is easy to get wrong, which we got wrong ourselves: the effect is collagen's, not the mineral's. Collagen fibres are arranged without a centre of symmetry and generate charge as they shear past one another — which is why the drawing is fibres, slanted, sliding. Hydroxyapatite is centrosymmetric, and that rules out classical piezoelectricity in the mineral. Our own Manifesto credited the mineral, twice, until a fact-check caught it.

The Egg Inside the Egg

It arrived; it did not grow here

You are not one thing that developed. You are a merger that held — which makes “self-contained individual” a claim your own cell biology declines to support.

The Supercooled Egg

Not how tough it is — what touches it

Painted turtle hatchlings spend their first winter in a shallow nest that goes below −10 °C, and they survive it by supercooling: staying liquid below the freezing point, because nothing has started the crystal.

Which means what decides whether one lives is not how tough it is but what touches it. A single ice nucleus at the shell — one contact — and the whole thing goes at once. It is the least metaphorical access argument in the collection: the outcome is set by the surroundings, and calling the difference resilience would be a straightforward misreading of the physics.

The Onion Egg

The shell that actually made us

Late in the life of a massive star, fusion runs in nested shells around a dense core — lighter elements burning in the outer layers, heavier ones further in, iron accumulating at the centre where fusion stops paying. It is an onion, and it is also an egg: a closed thing that eventually opens, violently, and scatters what it made.

The honest caveat, which this site has had to issue before: “every element heavier than hydrogen and helium was made in stars” is not true as usually told. Lithium, beryllium and boron are the exception — stars largely destroy them rather than build them, and they come mostly from cosmic-ray spallation. Six of our own pages were making the tidy version, three of them already marked verified.

The correction, and every page it touched, is logged in the changelog. The smoothed retelling that files off the exception is exactly the failure How We Got Here exists to mark.

The Breathing Shell

A boundary that works only because it leaks

An eggshell looks like a sealed container and is nothing of the sort. It is drilled through with thousands of microscopic, trumpet-shaped pores, and those pores are the only channels by which anything moves between the embryo and the world: oxygen in, carbon dioxide and water vapour out.

Seal it properly and you do not get a safer egg. You get a suffocated embryo inside a perfectly intact shell.

Protection and permeability are not opposites here — they are the same piece of engineering, and the shell is tuned so precisely that its conductance has to match the embryo’s demand over the whole of incubation. That is the argument this site keeps making about the rooms we put people in. The ones that work are not the ones sealed hardest.

Figures approximate and stated as a scaling relationship, not a measured count: pore number rises with egg mass from roughly 300 in a 1 g egg to about 30,000 in a 500 g egg, which puts a hen’s egg in the thousands. We have not seen a chicken-specific count we could check, so we do not give one.

The Double Seam

The gap is between them, not inside either

This is the double empathy problem: the misunderstanding between Autistic and non-Autistic people runs both ways, as a mismatch between two differently-built minds rather than a deficit inside one of them. Look for the fault in either half and you will not find it, because it is not in a half.

The Egg Not Yet Laid

Left open on purpose

A dotted outline and one faint star. This is the twelfth so that the sheet does not close: the pieces not made yet, the corrections not sent yet, the eggs somebody else draws.

It has a precedent here. The Print collection contains a sheet that is deliberately blank, and it earns its place the same way — the empty one is doing work the full ones cannot. If you want to fill this in, the call is open.
