On the cosmic origins of who we are, the science of how we carry the universe in our bones, and why neurodivergent and disabled people belong — not despite difference, but as difference.
We are all made of exploded stars
Carl Sagan said it plainly: “The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars” (Cosmos, 1980, ch. 9). When those stars exhausted their fuel, they exploded across the cosmos. Their debris became clouds. The clouds collapsed into new systems, new planets, new oceans, new life. You.
Almost every atom heavier than helium was manufactured in stars. Carbon, oxygen, calcium, iron — the building blocks of every human body — were forged under conditions of unimaginable pressure and heat, then scattered across the galaxy when those stars died. (Three light elements are the honest exceptions: most lithium came from the Big Bang, and beryllium and boron are made almost entirely by cosmic rays shattering heavier nuclei out in interstellar space. Stars destroy all three rather than build them.) We are, in a literal chemical sense, the remnants of stellar death.
This is not metaphor. It is the actual account of where you came from. And it matters — because a cosmology that grounds identity in the violent, generative creativity of the universe is a very different cosmology than one that locates value in conformity, productivity, or neurotypicality.
Your skeleton is piezoelectric
In the 1950s, Japanese orthopedic surgeon Dr. Iwao Yasuda and physicist Eiichi Fukada established something remarkable: bone is piezoelectric. Under mechanical stress — compression, tension, bending — bone crystal generates its own electrical charge. This is not incidental. It is how bone knows to grow, where to strengthen, how to heal. The skeleton is a living signal processor, converting force into information.
Piezo comes from the Greek piezein — to press, to squeeze. Certain materials generate an electric charge when their structure is deformed. In bone the effect comes chiefly from collagen — the protein scaffold, not the mineral — whose fibres are arranged without a centre of symmetry and slip past one another under shear. (Hydroxyapatite, the mineral that makes bone rigid, is symmetric in the way that rules out classical piezoelectricity; recent work gives it a role in bone's electrical environment, but the original effect Fukada and Yasuda measured was collagen's.) Every step you take, every breath, every impact — your bones are generating voltage. Responding. Adapting. Alive.
We carry the electrical signature of the cosmos not just as metaphor but as mechanism. The universe built into the architecture of our bodies the same responsive-to-pressure principle it uses everywhere: force begets signal, signal begets change, change begets structure. We are responsive systems, not static ones. Every nervous system that processes the world differently is doing what responsive systems do — responding to the particular pressures of a particular life.

The universe doesn't pathologize its own variation
The neurodiversity paradigm holds that neurological difference is a natural, valuable form of human variation — not a deviation from a healthy norm to be corrected, but a dimension of the diversity that characterizes our species. Autism, ADHD, dyslexia, Tourette's, and the full range of neurological profiles are not disorders in the sense of broken-ness. They are differences in how nervous systems are organized.
The universe is staggeringly, relentlessly various. Stars range from red dwarfs barely massive enough to fuse hydrogen, to hypergiants swollen past a thousand times the sun's radius, to blue monsters near two hundred times its mass. Galaxies spiral, ellipse, collide, merge, scatter. No two snowflakes, no two fingerprints, no two nervous systems. Variation is not the exception. It is the rule. It is the engine.
Core Claim
The same universe that forged every atom in your body also produced the nervous system you inhabit. There is no astrophysics of typicality. There is only the astonishing variety of what the cosmos can make — and we are part of that variety.
The DSM is a human document written at a particular historical moment to describe patterns of distress and difference through a particular cultural lens. The cosmos has no DSM. Turbulence in fluid dynamics is not a pathology — it is a regime of behavior, one with its own laws, its own beauty, its own utility. The same is true of neurological variation.
We reframe. Not to deny that neurodivergent and disabled people experience real challenges — many of which are compounded or entirely caused by environments built for a narrow range of bodies and minds — but to insist that the starting point is not deficit. The starting point is this: you came from the same place everything came from. Stars.
What it means to say L★S
Love You Down to Your Star Stuff — LYDTYSS, L★S — is not a slogan. It is a position. It is a way of saying: I see you at the level of your constituent matter. I love what you are made of. I love the process that made you. I love the particular, improbable, once-in-a-cosmos arrangement of atoms that is you, right now, reading this.
This matters in community spaces built for neurodivergent and disabled people because so much of what those community members have been told — by schools, by clinics, by families who meant well — is a story of falling short. Not meeting the threshold. Not reaching the benchmark. Not being the version that fits the space that was already built without them in mind.
What L★S says back
The threshold is arbitrary. The benchmark is cultural. The space can change. But you — the specific arrangement of matter and electricity and history and nervous system that is you — you are not a problem to be solved. You are a thing the universe made. We love you for it.
L★S is also punk. It refuses the frame in which some nervous systems are inherently more valuable than others. It refuses the medicalization of variation without consent. It refuses the premise that the burden of adaptation falls entirely on the person who diverges, rather than on the systems and structures that were built too narrow.
It is gentle and it is fierce. It is Sagan's wonder and it is community rage at a world that keeps telling neurodivergent and disabled people they are too much, too little, too loud, too still, too slow, too scattered, too focused, too strange. L★S says: we were made by supernovae. We are not too much. We are exactly as much as we are.

On piezoelectric bones and the neurodiversity paradigm
Your bones are piezoelectric. Under pressure — literal, mechanical pressure — they generate voltage. Collagen fibres in compact bone, sheared against one another, convert load to charge. This is how bone remodels: stress signals the skeleton to grow where it is needed, to reinforce the places that carry load. It is not damage. It is response. It is the body's oldest and most literal act of knowing.
Every step is a signal. Every weight you have carried has left its mark — not as fracture, but as architecture. The bone grew denser there. The body remembered.

Neurodivergent nervous systems process signal differently. They amplify some frequencies and damp others. They notice what the typical processing filter removes. They fatigue under loads that weren't in the design spec — because the design spec was never written with them in mind. This is the social model of disability applied to nervous systems: the problem is not the nervous system. The problem is the mismatch. The too-loud room. The eye contact requirement. The assumption of one right rhythm.
We carry our cosmology in our bodies: atoms forged in stars, bones that conduct electricity, nervous systems that are — each one — a distinct and unrepeatable way of encountering the world. The universe made all of it. The universe makes all of it still.
We are not asking for tolerance. We are not asking to be included in a structure built to exclude us, as a favor, on the condition that we approximate the expected shape. We are saying: the structure was wrong about what shapes are possible. We are made of the same stuff as everything. And everything includes us.
The Star Stuff Manifesto is the founding statement of this collection — the argument every zine, field guide and broadside here is a variation on. It braids two real findings with one paradigm, and the braid is a reading, not a proof. Sources below; corrections are logged publicly in the changelog.
Stellar nucleosynthesis is established science, traced to Burbidge, Burbidge, Fowler & Hoyle, “Synthesis of the Elements in Stars” (Reviews of Modern Physics 29, 1957) — the B²FH paper — and, for the modern accounting of which sites make which elements, Kobayashi, Karakas & Lugaro, “The Origin of Elements from Carbon to Uranium” (ApJ 900:179, 2020). Hydrogen is primordial; carbon comes from the triple-alpha process in red giants; nitrogen roughly half from low- and intermediate-mass AGB stars via the CNO cycle; oxygen and calcium from massive stars and core-collapse supernovae; iron roughly half from Type Ia supernovae rather than massive stars alone; iodine and the other r-process elements from neutron-star mergers. Lithium, beryllium and boron are the honest exceptions named in the text — most lithium is Big Bang, beryllium and boron come almost entirely from cosmic-ray spallation in the interstellar medium, and stars destroy all three. The Sagan passage is quoted verbatim from Cosmos (1980), ch. 9, “The Lives of the Stars.”
Bone piezoelectricity was established by Eiichi Fukada and Iwao Yasuda, “On the Piezoelectric Effect of Bone” (Journal of the Physical Society of Japan 12:1158–1162, 1957), following Yasuda's earlier work; C. A. L. Bassett and colleagues extended it through the 1960s, and it supplies a mechanism for Wolff's law — that bone remodels along the loads it carries. The effect is collagen's: its fibres are arranged without a centre of symmetry and generate charge when sheared past one another. Hydroxyapatite, the mineral that makes bone rigid, is centrosymmetric, which rules out classical piezoelectricity; recent work gives it a role in bone's electrical environment, but the original measured effect was the protein's, not the mineral's. The neurodiversity paradigm and the pathology paradigm it refuses are Nick Walker's formulations, from “Throw Away the Master's Tools: Liberating Ourselves from the Pathology Paradigm” (written 2011; published 2012 in Loud Hands: Autistic People, Speaking; revised 2013) and Neuroqueer Heresies (2021). Neurodiversity itself is not one person's coinage: per Botha, Chapman, Giwa Onaiwu, Kapp, Stannard Ashley & Walker, “The neurodiversity concept was developed collectively” (Autism, 2024), “neurological diversity” and “neurodiversity” reached print in 1997 and 1998 through journalist Harvey Blume, who attributed them to the online Autistic community — the InLv list founded by Martijn Dekker in 1996, and the wider movement around Jim Sinclair and Autism Network International. Neurodivergent is Kassiane Asasumasu's (2000). The mismatch framing is the social model of disability, from the disability rights movement. Stellar variety: red dwarfs outlive the present age of the universe; the largest hypergiants exceed a thousand solar radii; the most massive star known, R136a1, is about 196 solar masses (169–230; Gemini South, 2022), against a theoretical ceiling near 300.
The science here is real, and it does not make our ethics true. “The universe doesn't pathologize its own variation” is a statement about us — about what we owe each other — dressed in cosmology because that is where it was easiest to see. The cosmos has no opinion, and deriving an ought from an is is a fallacy we would rather name than commit. Bone's piezoelectricity is a mechanism in a skeleton; it is an analogy for responsive nervous systems, not evidence about them. Nothing in stellar chemistry implies anything about how a school or a clinic should be run. What the science does is more modest and, we think, enough: it removes the excuse that difference is a defect, by showing that variation is the ordinary condition of everything we have ever looked at. As About puts it — we are noticing a rhyme, not collecting a proof.
This page's claims were first checked in full on 9 August 2026, which corrected five things: the piezoelectric effect had been credited to hydroxyapatite rather than collagen (twice); Eiichi Fukada was missing from the discovery credit; “every atom heavier than hydrogen and helium was manufactured inside a star” overstated the case against lithium, beryllium and boron; hypergiants were given as a thousand times the sun's mass rather than its radius; and a Sagan passage introduced as speech had been altered, and is now verbatim with its chapter.
