Where all of this comes from
The paper on spread three. ATLAS and CMS Collaborations, “Combined Measurement of the Higgs Boson Mass in pp Collisions at √s = 7 and 8 TeV with the ATLAS and CMS Experiments,” Physical Review Letters 114, 191803 (14 May 2015), doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.114.191803; preprint arXiv:1503.07589. The figures — 5,154 authors, 33 pages, nine of research and references, twenty-four of names and institutions — are from Davide Castelvecchi’s report in Nature news (2015), doi:10.1038/nature.2015.17567. We did not count the author list or the pages ourselves, and one other source gives 5,153; we print Nature’s figure and say so rather than averaging two numbers.
The taxonomy. CRediT, the Contributor Roles Taxonomy: fourteen roles, ANSI/NISO Z39.104-2022, doi:10.3789/ansi.niso.z39.104-2022. The fourteen role names are quoted from the standard’s own published list at credit.niso.org. The two-column arrangement on spread four is ours and not the standard’s, which publishes one flat alphabetical list and ranks nothing; the spread says so on its face.
The finding on spread seven. Vincent Larivière, David Pontille & Cassidy R. Read at full text. This zine shipped with the paper unread — the publisher returned 403 — and spread seven carried the direction of the finding with no figures at all. Ryan put the PDF in front of us the same day and the spread was rewritten from it. Source of the 30,054 papers, the 2017–2018 PLOS window, the 57-against-49 per cent investigation gap, the 30 per cent on funding acquisition and supervision, and the writing inversion — which was not in the draft, and is the best thing in the paper. Note the date: the article appears in issue 2(1) dated 2021, while the paper’s own citation block gives 2020, its online-first year; both refer to the same DOI.
And the limit of that paper’s method, which it states and we repeat. Gender was assigned by algorithm, not self-report: it reached a gender for 82.2 per cent of the authorships analysed, and is reported as 98.3 per cent precise for men and 86.7 per cent for women. A measurement that is less accurate for the group the finding is about is worth saying out loud, and it does not overturn a gap of that size but it does set the resolution.
What this deliberately does not re-argue
No. 64 owns the multiples argument in full — Ogburn and Thomas’s 148 independent discoveries, Merton’s conclusion that multiples are the dominant pattern and the lone singleton the exception, and Eno’s scenius. That is the deeper reason a one-name field misdescribes discovery, and it is settled there rather than restated here. Field Guide No. 25 owns the five mechanisms by which a name comes off finished work, and this zine takes the format underneath them. Who Is Holding the Candle owns the argument for naming the observer at all, and No. 62 owns the measured delay between a finding and its name.
A rhyme, not a proof. Nothing about the structure of a byline demonstrates anything about a nervous system, and spread six says so on the page rather than leaving it to a colophon. What the mechanics supply is one shape held steady — a record with one field finds one kind of contributor — and the reader decides whether it fits.
What is still open
The Larivière, Pontille and Sugimoto figures — closed the day this shipped, and the spread now carries them from the paper. Whether CRediT adoption has changed anything measurable since 2022 — we did not find out, and did not guess. And the failure named on spread nine is genuinely unfixed: this site records the route of every source and almost nothing about who did which part of the work, which is the one-field problem in our own house.
