Haraway, read at the primary. Donna Haraway, "Situated Knowledges: The Science Question in Feminism and the Privilege of Partial Perspective," Feminist Studies 14(3), Autumn 1988, 575–599. Every quotation here is verbatim from pages 581–585 of the article itself: the conquering gaze and the unmarked category claiming "the power to see and not be seen, to represent while escaping representation" (581); "the god trick of seeing everything from nowhere" (581) and "that view of infinite vision is an illusion, a god trick" (582); "The moral is simple: only partial perspective promises objective vision" and "Feminist objectivity is about limited location and situated knowledge … It allows us to become answerable for what we learn how to see" (583); "Relativism is a way of being nowhere while claiming to be everywhere equally," "Relativism is the perfect mirror twin of totalization," "Relativism and totalization are both 'god tricks'," and the standpoints of the subjugated as "not 'innocent' positions" (584); "not just any partial perspective will do" (585). Her astronomical imagery — the "brilliant space platforms of the powerful" (583) and the epigraph "The stuff of stars has come alive" (582) — is quoted from that text and is not our embellishment.
Parallax. Friedrich Bessel's 1838 parallax for 61 Cygni of 0.3136″, measured at Königsberg with a Fraunhofer heliometer and giving roughly 10.4 light years against a modern value near 11.4; Thomas Henderson (Alpha Centauri) and Friedrich Struve (Vega) reached comparable results within months. The "two-centimetre coin at thirteen kilometres" is our own arithmetic from that angle, and is approximate. The pre-Bessel objection from absent parallax, and the star-size problem arising from spurious telescopic discs, are given qualitatively; the discs are a diffraction artefact of a finite aperture.
The ladder and Leavitt. Henrietta Swan Leavitt joined Harvard College Observatory in 1895 as one of its women "computers," measuring plates; she found and measured periods for roughly 1,700 variables in the Magellanic Clouds. The period–luminosity relation appeared as "Periods of 25 Variable Stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud," Harvard College Observatory Circular 173 (1912), issued under director Edward Pickering's name and opening with the statement that it "has been prepared by Miss Leavitt." The distance-ladder description is given structurally rather than with figures; the remark that recalibrating the variable-star rung has historically moved the whole extragalactic scale is stated qualitatively and is not primary-sourced here.
WEIRD. Joseph Henrich, Steven J. Heine & Ara Norenzayan, "The weirdest people in the world?", Behavioral and Brain Sciences 33(2–3), 2010, 61–83 — 96% of samples from Western industrialised nations, 68% of subjects from the United States, from countries holding about 12% of the world's population, and the finding that such subjects are frequent outliers on many measures.
Double empathy is Damian Milton, "On the ontological status of autism: the 'double empathy problem'," Disability & Society 27(6), 2012, 883–887, already carried elsewhere in this collection. The framing of this zine comes from Conquering Gaze from Nowhere at Stimpunks; Haraway and the physics were traced to their own primaries here rather than carried across. Held honestly. Two joints are marked contested and argued in place rather than hedged: the parallax-to-situated-knowledges parallel on spread 9 (Haraway never mentions parallax; the analogy is ours, and a theorem cannot settle an epistemology), and the personal-equation-to-research-practice synthesis on spread 13. The three-erasures reading on spread 7 documents each case individually; treating them as a pattern is our interpretation, and we have not searched for counter-examples — the spread says so on its face. This chain again contains no leap joints — 10 documented, 2 contested — which is now two chains running. Worth watching rather than celebrating: if the weakest tag never fires, that may say more about which subjects we choose than about how carefully we argue them.
