Things fall because of what they are


Aristotle's physics explains motion by disposition. A stone falls because it is in the nature of heavy things to seek the centre; fire rises because it is in the nature of fire to seek the heights. Each body has a proper place and moves toward it.

It comes with quantities, too. Heavier bodies fall faster, in proportion to their weight. And the denser the medium, the slower the fall.

Now here is the thing that matters, and it is not that Aristotle was careless. Go outside and test it. Drop a stone and a leaf. The stone lands first. Drop the same stone in water and it sinks slowly. Every prediction checks out.

The error is not in the observations. It is in where the explanation was put. Aristotle located the cause of the trajectory inside the object — in what kind of thing it was. The medium appeared in the theory only as a modifier, a resistance that slowed down what the object was going to do anyway.

Everything that follows in this chain is about that choice of location, and about a very long argument over whether the reason a thing moves the way it does is in the thing or in what is acting on it.

Physics took roughly two millennia to settle it. Then we ran the answer backwards and pointed it at children.

Imagine the air away


Galileo's decisive contribution was not an experiment. It was noticing that Aristotle's rule contradicts itself, and then doing something strange: reasoning about a world that does not exist.

The argument, from Two New Sciences (1638). Suppose heavy bodies fall faster than light ones. Now tie a heavy body to a light one. The light one should hold the heavy one back, so the pair falls slower than the heavy body alone. But the pair is heavier than either, so it should fall faster. The same premise gives both answers.

To get further he had to make the fall measurable, so he rolled balls down inclined planes — slowing the motion enough to time it, and finding that the distance goes as the square of the time regardless of the ball's weight.

And then the move that this whole collection keeps circling: he imagined the medium away. Not "air resistance is small" but "consider a fall with no medium at all," a thing no one in 1638 had ever seen.

The tower, and why it is marked contested. Everyone knows the story where Galileo drops two balls from the Leaning Tower of Pisa and settles it in front of witnesses. It is almost certainly not true. It appears in a biography by his assistant Vincenzo Viviani, written decades afterwards, and Galileo — who was not shy — never describes it in his own published work. The most famous experiment in physics is a story about an experiment. Which is precisely the kind of smoothing this collection exists to catch: the tidy public demonstration travels, the self-contradiction argument and the inclined planes do not.

The idealization deserves one more note, because No. 39 is about it going wrong. Wells idealized the air away too, and got a threshold that was true only in a room nobody has. The tool is the same; what differs is whether you remember you used it. Galileo's idealization was a hypothesis awaiting a vacuum. It waited three centuries.

Character, removed


Newton finished it. In the mechanics that followed, a body's motion is determined by the forces acting on it and by exactly one property of the body itself — a single number, its mass.

Look at what disappeared. There is no heaviness-seeking. No proper place. No disposition, no tendency, no character. The object stops being the kind of thing that wants to go somewhere and becomes the kind of thing that is acted on.

Be precise about what was not deleted, because the sloppy version of this argument is wrong in a way that matters. The body still has a property. Mass is real, it differs between objects, and it appears in the equation. Bodies are not interchangeable.

What changed is that the property no longer explains the trajectory by itself. Ask why this object took that path and the answer is a description of its situation — what was pulling, pushing, resisting — with the object's own property entering as one term among several rather than as the story.

That distinction is the whole of the second half of this zine. Nobody sensible claims children are identical. The question is whether a child's trajectory is explained by what they are or by what they are in.

The hammer and the feather


At the end of the last moonwalk of Apollo 15, David Scott stood in front of the television camera holding a geology hammer in one hand and a falcon feather in the other, and let go of both at the same moment.

They fell together. They landed together. Scott remarked that this showed Galileo had been right, and the film is still there to watch.

It is not a subtle demonstration and it was never meant to be. A hammer and a feather are about as far apart as two everyday objects get — in weight, in density, in shape, in every property Aristotle would have called their nature — and in the absence of air, every one of those differences stopped mattering to the trajectory.

Sit with the shape of that for a moment, because it is exactly inverted from how we usually reason about people.

On Earth the feather flutters and drifts and lands late, and every bit of that behaviour looks like a property of the feather. It looks like what feathers are like. You could build a whole science of feather-character on it, and the predictions would work, and you would be wrong — not because the observations were bad but because the medium was doing the work and was invisible.

The only way to find out was to remove the air and look again. Which, on Earth, we mostly cannot do to a childhood.

Now run it backwards


Here is the claim this zine exists to make, stated plainly so it can be argued with.

Deficit ideology is Aristotelian physics, applied to children. It explains a trajectory by an internal disposition: grit, mindset, resilience, motivation, character, self-esteem. The child's situation appears in the account the way the medium appeared in Aristotle's — as a modifier that slows down or speeds up what the child was going to do anyway.

And it has the same evidential position that Aristotle's physics had. It fits ordinary observation closely. In any real school, some children do visibly persist longer, and their outcomes are visibly better. The correlation is right there. You can build an entire industry on it and every prediction will look confirmed.

The medium here has a name in the literature: poverty, racism, ableism, hunger, housing, undiagnosed disability, a classroom built for one nervous system. This collection's first chain is largely a history of how it was made invisible.

Marked contested, and here is precisely what is contested. Children are not projectiles. They have interiority, agency and preference; a stone does not decide anything, and any argument that treats a child as fully determined by circumstance is making the mirror-image error and is just as wrong. What we claim is narrower and, we think, defensible: an explanation that locates the cause of a trajectory inside the object, while the medium goes unmeasured, is the specific failure mode physics spent two thousand years escaping. That is a claim about the shape of an explanation, not about whether children are objects. The analogy is ours, Newton is not an authority on pedagogy, and if this spread reads as though mechanics settles education, it has overstepped.

The machinery arrives

Behaviourism deleted the wrong thing


There is an obvious objection at this point, and answering it is the most useful thing on this spread.

Didn't behaviourism already make the Newtonian move? It threw out inner states, refused to talk about minds, insisted on observable behaviour and environmental contingencies. That sounds exactly like deleting disposition.

It isn't, and the difference is the point. Newton moved the explanation outward and upward — from the object to the field it sits in, which means to a situation nobody owns and anybody can change. Behaviourism moved it outward and then put it straight back into a box around the individual.

The "environment" in an operant account is the reinforcement schedule arranged around this one child: the tokens, the contingencies, the chart on the wall. Housing is not in it. Hunger is not in it. Whether the classroom is survivable for this nervous system is not in it.

The apparatus itself — Thorndike's law of effect, Skinner's schedules, the teaching machines, the arrival of all of it in the classroom — is No. 38, and we are not going to re-run that chain here. What matters for this one is only what it leaves behind: a mature technology for changing a child, and no vocabulary at all for changing a room.

Given that inheritance, everything on the next four spreads is close to inevitable.

They checked first. Then they shipped it anyway.


The self-esteem movement is usually told as a story about a culture that failed to check its evidence. That telling is too kind, and the truth is stranger.

California established a Task Force to Promote Self-Esteem and Personal and Social Responsibility in 1986. To its credit, it commissioned academic work: a volume of research reviews from University of California scholars, published as The Social Importance of Self-Esteem (Mecca, Smelser & Vasconcellos, eds., University of California Press, 1989).

That volume reported what the literature actually showed:

The Task Force's final report, Toward a State of Esteem, was published in 1990.

This is not a failure to look. They looked, they paid for the looking, the answer came back negative, and it was printed — and the programme went out regardless, into a decade of school assemblies and worksheets and posters. Whatever governed that decision, it was not the evidence, because the evidence was in the room.

Hold that alongside No. 40. There the problem was a threshold nobody had examined. Here the threshold was met, the answer was no, and it changed nothing. A standard of evidence only functions if something depends on it.

The 2000s and 2010s

The originators objected. It kept selling.


Self-esteem gave way to grit and growth mindset — better research, genuinely more careful researchers, and the same location for the explanation.

The meta-analysis is the one we already walked in No. 40. Macnamara and Burgoyne examined growth-mindset interventions across 63 studies and 97,672 participants and found publication bias, authors with a financial incentive to report positive effects more likely to report them, and major threats to internal validity. Better studies, smaller effect. That is the signature of something that is not there.

And here is the part that separates this spread from a straightforward debunking. The researchers themselves said so. Carol Dweck has written at length about "false growth mindset" and about the concept being misused — including to explain why some students simply cannot learn, which is the precise inversion of what she proposed. Angela Duckworth has cautioned publicly against using grit measures for high-stakes school accountability.

The last step is the one Aristotle could not have taken: making the disposition measurable, trackable and saleable in real time.

Social-emotional learning, positive behaviour systems, character education, classroom points apps. A child's self-regulation becomes a number. The number goes on a screen. The screen goes home to a parent, and into a dataset.

Ben Williamson has described SEL as the product of a coalition — psy entrepreneurs, global policy advice, media advocacy, philanthropy, think tanks, tech R&D and venture capital — which is an unusually exact description of how an idea becomes an infrastructure. Behavioural indicators, as he notes, tend to reward measurable compliance rather than anything you would recognise as development.

And notice what a points system cannot represent, structurally. There is no field on the dashboard for the room. No column for whether the lighting is intolerable, whether the child ate, whether the instruction is delivered in the only modality they cannot use, whether the adult in front of them is frightening. Every variable it can hold is a property of the child.

So the tool cannot find the air even in principle — and it will faithfully, hourly, in colour, attribute the whole trajectory to the feather.

A correction, to ourselves

A racket, a cult, or a corporation


There is a line everybody reaches for at exactly this point in the argument, and it is a misquotation. We reached for it too.

Eric Hoffer, The Temper of Our Time (1967), in the essay "The Negro Revolution." Note what the smoothing did, because it is not a trivial edit.

The popular version invents a three-stage moral arc — a decline over time, from purity to corruption — which is satisfying and quotable and not what he said. Hoffer offered three parallel outcomes, not a sequence, and he was making a specific observation about America — here — not stating a universal law of causes.

That said, the observation survives its own misquotation, and the money is not in dispute. Mindset marketing is a market: curricula, licensing, training days, apps, subscriptions, consultants, keynote circuits. And Macnamara and Burgoyne's finding on the last spread is the relevant evidence — authors with a financial interest were more likely to report positive effects.

Marked contested. That a market exists and shapes what gets adopted is well documented. That commercial interest is the primary driver — rather than institutional habit, political convenience, or the ordinary human preference for a fixable problem — is an argument, and a monocausal one. We would rather mark it than let a satisfying story do the work of evidence, which is the failure mode this entire spread is about.

The medium, measured

Where the air actually is


The strongest reply to all of this is fair: fine, but the medium is vague. Character you can at least measure. So here is the medium, measured.

Scarcity has a cognitive cost. Mullainathan and Shafir's work argues that being short of something — money, time, food — consumes mental bandwidth directly, degrading exactly the capacities that get read as character: planning, impulse control, follow-through. Their key term is slack: the margin that lets a small setback stay small. Privilege is largely slack, and slack is invisible to whoever has it.

Read that against the falling feather and the shape is identical. The person without slack behaves differently in a way that looks dispositional and is medium-dependent. Change the medium and the behaviour changes, without anyone acquiring more grit.

Linda Nathan names the assumptions this displaces, and they are the assumptions mindset marketing runs on: money doesn't matter; race doesn't matter; just work harder; everyone can go to college; beliefs make dreams true.

That sentence is the Newtonian move, in a staffroom. Not this child lacks something but what is acting on this child, and which of it can we change?

Marked leap, and this is the one to watch. The seductive next sentence is remove the barriers and the difference vanishes, the way it vanished on the Moon. We are not claiming that, and the analogy does not license it. Removing a barrier does not flatten all variation — and this collection would be the last to want it to, since our whole argument elsewhere is that human variation is real, is not a defect, and does not need eliminating. Worse, the strong version is dangerous in a familiar way: if you claim gaps vanish once barriers are removed, then a persisting gap becomes proof that the barriers are gone, which lands you back in deficit ideology by a longer road. The narrow claim is the one that holds: the trajectory is not explained by character alone, and the medium is measurable and changeable. The vanishing is a rhyme with a demonstration on the Moon. It is not a prediction.

The turn

When a feather falls slowly, look for the air


You would not watch a feather drift down and conclude that it lacks determination. You would not design an intervention to build feather resilience. You would look for the air, because that is where the explanation is.

That instinct is not soft-headedness. It is the single most productive habit physical science ever acquired, and it cost two thousand years, a self-contradiction argument, a set of inclined planes and eventually a man on the Moon with a hammer in one hand.

So the argument of this zine is not that we should be kinder than science. It is that we should be as rigorous as it, and we are not. Deficit ideology is not a hard-headed alternative to structural analysis. It is the older, worse physics — the one that puts the cause inside the object and treats the medium as a footnote — kept alive in a domain where nobody thought to check.

And nobody built this road on purpose either. Aristotle described what he saw. The California task force commissioned research. Dweck and Duckworth did careful work and objected to its misuse. Teachers adopted programmes offered to them by people who believed in them. Every step was a competent local move, and the accumulation runs two thousand years in the right direction and forty in the wrong one.

Which is the hopeful reading, and the reason this collection writes chains. The medium is the part you can change. That is what makes it the useful place to put the explanation — not because it is kinder, but because a room can be rebuilt and a nature cannot.

Not:that children are objects. They have interiority and agency; a stone does not. An account that makes a child wholly a product of circumstance is the mirror error and just as wrong.
Not:that difference isn't real. Mass survived Newton. Variation between people is real, is not a defect, and is the thing this whole site exists to defend. The claim is that it does not explain the trajectory by itself.
Not:that removing barriers makes all gaps vanish. We marked that as this chain's one leap. Claiming it would mean a persisting gap proves the barriers are gone — deficit ideology by a longer road.
Not:that the researchers are the villains. Dweck and Duckworth both objected to the deployment. The market kept going. That distinction is the whole of spread 11.

Held honestly. Three joints are contested and argued in place: the tower story (spread 3), the physics-to-deficit-ideology transfer (spread 6, where the note states plainly that children are not projectiles and mechanics is no authority on pedagogy), and the market-as-primary-driver claim (spread 11, which declines to let a satisfying monocausal story stand in for evidence). One joint is a leapremove the air and the difference vanishes, spread 12 — and it is the first leap joint in this collection. It is marked because it is the sentence a reader most wants to be true, and because the strong version is actively dangerous: if gaps must vanish when barriers are removed, a persisting gap becomes proof the barriers are gone.
