The World Health Organization posted that on social media, and added that saying otherwise was misinformation.
The same month the US CDC said the virus spreads "through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks that can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs." The CDC did not begin using the words "airborne" or "aerosol" to describe transmission until October 2020. In July of that year, 239 scientists wrote to the public health agencies asking them to recognise the airborne route.
This zine is not about who lied. Nobody lied. It was doctrine, faithfully applied — and the doctrine rested on a number that had quietly changed jobs.
Current recommendations, as the historians of this put it, rest on four tenets: that transmission is basically droplets versus aerosols; that the difference is droplet size alone; that the cut-off is 5 µm; and that each route matters at a different distance.
