One Word for the Opposite

on the vocabulary we built for what hurts, the single word we have for what doesn’t — and why a glimmer is probably not a dopamine hit, which is better news than it sounds

An asymmetry you can count

Count the words


Here is something checkable that needs no laboratory. Write down the words we have for a nervous system going badly.

Trigger. Flashback. Hypervigilance. Activation. Dysregulation. Rupture. Freeze. Fawn. Shutdown. Overwhelm. Startle. Collapse. Every one of them is in common use. Several have entered ordinary speech. They are precise, they are distinguishable from each other, and a person can say which one is happening.

Now write down the words for the opposite — not for happiness in general, but specifically for a small moment in which a nervous system registers that things are all right.

There is one. It is glimmer, and it was coined in 2018.

That asymmetry is the finding of this zine, and it does not require anybody to agree about physiology. You can verify it by trying the exercise. One vocabulary was built out over decades by clinicians, researchers and survivors who needed to name what was happening to them. The other was not built.

The reason is not mysterious. Language grows where the pressure is, and the pressure was on harm — on explaining it, treating it, getting it recognised. Nobody had to convince an institution that a moment of quiet was real in order to be believed.

What a word does

A thing with a name is a thing you can count


Before the word, these moments were not rare. They were uncountable — not in the sense of being too many, but in the sense of not being the kind of thing anybody was counting.

A category with a name behaves differently. It can be looked for. It can be mentioned to somebody else without a paragraph of explanation. It can be noticed twice and recognised as the same kind of event. None of that is a change in the moments. All of it is a change in what attention can get hold of.

The word did not create the experience. It created the possibility of keeping track of it.

Which is a much smaller claim than the ones usually made for such words, and a more defensible one. Nobody has to believe anything about vagal tone to accept that naming a category makes its members findable. That is what nouns do.

And it is the reason this zine is in this collection rather than the one next door. A piece in Star Stuff is supposed to take one settled fact and follow it until the belonging claim is already inside it. This piece has no settled mechanism to offer and is not going to pretend otherwise. Star Gazing exists for exactly this — possibility rather than proof — and Helen Edgar named it.

Whose word

Deb Dana, 2018


The word is Deb Dana’s, from The Polyvagal Theory in Therapy: Engaging the Rhythm of Regulation (Norton, 2018). She proposed it as the counterpart to triggers: the small cues that register as safety rather than as threat.

It travelled fast, which tells you the gap was real. A word that fills nothing does not get taken up by people who were not looking for it.

And it arrived inside a framework this house treats carefully. Polyvagal theory is influential and scientifically contested — the same note we carry on The Nearest Body (No. 72). Which raises the obvious question, and it is worth answering directly rather than stepping around.

Does a good word stop being good if the theory it arrived in turns out to be wrong?

No. Words and theories are different objects with different failure modes. A theory makes claims that can be false. A word makes a category available, and the category either earns its keep in use or it doesn’t. Glimmer has earned its keep by being immediately usable by people who have never heard of the vagus nerve.

Helen Edgar puts it plainly, and her version is the one this zine works from: glimmers do not need to relate to polyvagal at all. They are just the opposite of triggers — moments of joy, comfort, sensory or cognitive.

The monotropic reading

When the tunnel and the room agree


Helen Edgar reads glimmers through monotropism — attention gathered on fewer things at a time — and the reading is specific enough to be useful.

A glimmer, in her account, is a small but powerful moment when everything aligns: focus, sensory needs and emotions coming together in a way that feels right. Not a mood, and not an achievement. An alignment.

That is a more exacting definition than it first appears, and it explains why glimmers are so specific to the person having them. If a glimmer requires the attention tunnel, the sensory environment and the emotional state to agree at the same instant, then it is not transferable. Somebody else’s conditions are different, so their alignments happen elsewhere, over different things, and cannot be recommended.

This is why glimmer lists do not work as advice. The alignment is between a particular bodymind and a particular room, and nobody else is standing in it.

It also explains something the word-book this collection came from noticed independently: that the moments people reach for words to describe are so often sensory and small — light through leaves, the shine on water, the sound of a brook, the smell of a book. Those are catalogued in Under the Word (Field Guide No. 22).

Held at arm’s length, on purpose

The five theories, and why we are not using them


There is a list, circulated in trauma-informed circles and useful to know, of five existing theories about the nervous system, offered as things a practitioner might synthesise.

Polyvagal theory (Porges) · neurovisceral integration (Thayer, Hansen, Saus-Rose & Johnsen) · the biological behavioural model (Grossman & Taylor) · the resonance frequency model (Lehrer) · the psychophysiological coherence model (McCraty & Childre, HeartMath). The list reaches us via Janae Elisabeth’s Trauma Geek, crediting Sarah Schlote.

Here is the thing worth knowing before treating that as five bricks to stack. They are five competing interpretations of largely one measurement — heart-rate variability and respiratory sinus arrhythmia — and two of them are the opposing sides of an unresolved argument. Grossman & Taylor (2007) is the standing critique of Porges: it argues that RSA is too confounded by respiration to serve as an index of vagal tone, and that polyvagal misdescribes the evolution of vagal cardiac control. The disagreement is live.

One and three are not two parts of a synthesis. They are the two sides of a fight, and a piece that blended them would be flattening a live dispute into a smooth story.

That is a familiar shape here. Our chain Four Decimal Places (No. 79) follows what happens when a smooth story is built on borrowed authority and left unchecked for eight years.

So this zine names the five and uses none of them. Not because the science is worthless — neurovisceral integration in particular is well regarded — but because none of it decides whether the tea was good. The moment does not become more real if a model backs it, and it does not stop being real if the models are still arguing.

The question everybody asks

Probably not dopamine


Ask what a glimmer is made of and almost everyone reaches for the same answer. A little hit of dopamine. It is the folk chemistry of our moment, and it is very likely the wrong molecule.

Kent Berridge and Terry Robinson spent decades separating two things that ordinary language runs together: wanting and liking. Wanting is the pull toward a thing — anticipation, seeking, the tug of a cue. Liking is the hedonic impact of the thing when it actually arrives.

Dopamine turns out to do the first and not the second. It carries incentive salience — wanting — and it is conspicuous for its failure to increase the pleasure of a sweet taste in the experiments designed to measure exactly that. In people, dopamine tracks ratings of wanting a reward better than ratings of enjoying it.

Liking runs somewhere else, and somewhere strikingly small. It depends on hedonic hotspots — regions roughly a cubic millimetre across in rats, in the shell of the nucleus accumbens and the ventral pallidum — where opioid and endocannabinoid signalling, not dopamine, does the work. Mu-opioid activity in one of those spots can more than double the liking reaction to sweetness.

A glimmer, as Helen describes it, is not the pull toward something. It is the quality of the moment already arriving. That is liking, and liking is not the dopamine system.

And this is better news than it sounds. The dopamine story quietly makes a glimmer into a reward — something obtained, chased, hit. The liking story does not. It says the moment is not a payoff for anything, was not earned, and is not on a schedule. Nobody has to go and get it.

Held honestly, since this zine spent a spread refusing to lean on neuroscience. The wanting/liking dissociation is far better supported than the polyvagal claims, and it is still an active research programme, mapped mostly in rats, and the human picture is more tangled. It is here as a correction to a popular claim, not as a foundation. What it establishes is narrow: if you were going to name a molecule, dopamine is the wrong one.

What it is for

A practice, not a discovery


Put the pieces together and a modest, defensible account is left standing, with nothing in it that requires anybody to settle a scientific argument.

The moments are real and always were. The vocabulary for their opposite is enormous and theirs is one word old. A word makes a category findable. And what the word is for is not explanation — it is noticing.

A glimmer is not a discovery about the nervous system. It is a practice of attention, and the practice is the whole of it.

Which is why it sits so naturally beside monotropism. If attention is the medium a person lives in — gathered, narrow, hard to move and enormously rich where it lands — then a word that directs attention toward small alignments is not a small intervention. It is an intervention in the only place the person actually is.

And it needs no permission from a model. The tea was good. The light through the leaves was worth stopping for. Somebody said the right thing in the right tone and something in you unclenched. None of that is waiting on a replication.

This is why the piece is filed here rather than next door. Not everything worth printing is a settled fact, and pretending otherwise is its own kind of dishonesty.

What this does not say


A zine about noticing good moments is about four words from becoming something insufferable. So, plainly:

Not:that noticing glimmers fixes anything. It is a practice of attention, not a treatment, not a substitute for support, and not something to be recommended to a person who is drowning. “Have you tried noticing the good moments” is a sentence that has done real harm.
Not:a case against polyvagal theory, or for it. The framework is contested; this zine says so once and then does not rest on it. Deb Dana’s word is good independently of it, which is the argument on spread four, and Helen Edgar makes the same point in her own words.
Not:that the dopamine correction is the new explanation. Spread seven exists to remove a wrong molecule, not to install a right one. If you were going to name a chemical, it is not dopamine — and the better move is not to name one.
Not:a glimmer list. If the moment is an alignment between a particular bodymind and a particular room, then somebody else’s list is a list of their rooms. Prescribing them is the fastest way to turn a noticing practice into another thing to fail at.
Not:joy as a duty, or as evidence of recovery. Nobody owes anybody a glimmer count. A hard week with none in it is a hard week, not a failure of practice, and the word was never meant to be a target.
Not:a proof, and this time not even a rhyme. The other pieces in this series follow a settled fact until the belonging claim is inside it. This one cannot, and does not try. What it offers is an asymmetry you can count, a correction to a popular claim about a molecule, and an argument that a word which makes something findable is worth having on its own terms. Star Gazing is where we put the things we mean but cannot demonstrate.

The debate is described in the literature as unresolved. Nothing here is a criticism of Janae Elisabeth’s article, which is a practitioner setting out the models she works between; the point is only that they cannot be stacked.

Wanting and liking. Kent C. Berridge & Terry E. Robinson, across the incentive-salience literature — dopamine mediating wanting rather than hedonic liking; hedonic hotspots of roughly a cubic millimetre in the nucleus accumbens medial shell and ventral pallidum; mu-opioid neurotransmission in a hotspot more than doubling liking reactions to sucrose; and dopamine’s conspicuous failure to raise hedonic impact in taste-reactivity work. Why this is in Star Gazing

Three earlier attempts to build this piece failed in the same way, and the failure is worth recording. Each tried to put glimmers in Star Stuff, whose register is one settled, checkable fact followed honestly until the belonging claim is inside it. Glimmers has no such fact under it — the framework it arrived in is contested, and the joy literature has its own retraction attached — so each attempt either leaned on shaky ground or, having refused to, ended up with rigorous physics tied to the subject by a thread. The topic was never the problem. The collection was. Star Gazing exists for possibility rather than proof; Helen named it; five of its members are her guest zines. Filed correctly, the piece needs no mechanism and stops straining for one.

A rhyme, not a proof — and on spread nine, not even that. The tea was good. That did not need checking, and it was never going to be settled by a model that is still arguing with itself.
