Lorenz. Edward N. Lorenz, “Deterministic Nonperiodic Flow,” Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences 20(2), 1963 — the origin of the equations, and the paper Nick Brown eventually read. Open: cited here at the level of its standard description; we have not read it at primary for this piece, which is an uncomfortable thing to admit in a chain whose hinge is somebody reading it, and is admitted for that reason.
The 2005 paper and the number. Barbara L. Fredrickson & Marcial F. Losada, “Positive Affect and the Complex Dynamics of Human Flourishing,” American Psychologist 60(7), 2005 — source of the critical positivity ratio of 2.9013 and the upper bound of 11.6346. Fredrickson’s trade book is Positivity: Top-Notch Research Reveals the 3 to 1 Ratio That Will Change Your Life (2009); the rounding on spread six is visible on its own cover. Losada’s earlier application of Lorenz-type equations to team meeting data dates from 1999.
The critique. Nicholas J. L. Brown, Alan D. Sokal & Harris L. Friedman, “The Complex Dynamics of Wishful Thinking: The Critical Positivity Ratio,” American Psychologist, July 2013 — no theoretical or empirical justification for applying fluid-dynamics equations to changes in human emotion, numerous fundamental conceptual and mathematical errors, and the conclusion that the critical minimum ratio is entirely unfounded. Sokal is the author of the 1996 Social Text hoax.
Brown’s account. That he was a part-time master’s student in applied positive psychology at the University of East London, in his fifties, without mathematical training beyond school; that the paper was on his course; that what struck him was the absence of a step connecting data to equations; and that he read Lorenz 1963 before contacting Sokal. Open: this is assembled from contemporaneous press accounts (Science News, The Scientist, Retraction Watch, the APA Monitor) rather than from Brown directly, and the details are consistent across them. Nothing here is quoted from him.
The correction, and what remains contested. The 2005 paper was corrected: the nonlinear dynamical modelling and the model-based ratio predictions were withdrawn as invalid, while the authors maintained other empirical elements. Losada did not co-sign. Carol Nickerson’s “There Is No Empirical Evidence for Critical Positivity Ratios” (2018) disputes what was left standing; a related paper attracted an expression of concern in 2014. Spread ten is marked contested on its face because this is a live disagreement between named living researchers and this chain does not adjudicate it.
On naming people. Everyone in this chain is named, because they are named on the publications and the correction is public. The chain is hard on the reasoning and declines to be hard on the people: Lorenz was right, Brown was a student, Sokal lent a name, and Fredrickson corrected her own paper. Ryan’s instruction was to judge the paper rather than the person, and the spreads are written to that.
The coda, and what it does not claim
Spread twelve is deliberately not a link, carries no joint tag and no spine, and says so on its face. It exists because the obvious question — did this number reach the classroom? — deserves an answer, and the answer is that we could not establish a citation from positive behaviour support literature to Fredrickson & Losada. Asserting one would have been the chain’s own error committed in its last spread. Cook et al., “Positive Greetings at the Door: Evaluation of a Low-Cost, High-Yield Proactive Classroom Management Strategy,” Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions (2018) — for the practice and, importantly, for what it measured: academic engaged time and disruptive behaviour. Cook et al. (2017), in the same journal, is direct research on raising the positive-to-negative interaction ratio. John Gottman’s 5:1 is an empirical description from observed couples rather than a constant derived from mathematics, and his remark that he never understood the Fredrickson–Losada mathematics and received no reply from Losada is widely reported. Barbara Ehrenreich, Bright-sided: How Positive Thinking Is Undermining America (2009), pp. 8–9, for positive thinking as “an apology for the crueler aspects of the market economy” and for its flip side as a harsh insistence on personal responsibility. Open: all of these are cited from abstracts, publication records and consistent secondary accounts rather than read in full; the Ehrenreich passage was supplied by Ryan from the book. Nothing on that spread is an argument against greeting children warmly, or against a high ratio of encouragement to correction, and the spread says so in its own closing note.
The joints
Ten links: eight documented, one contested, one leap. The contested joint is spread ten, on what survived the retraction. The leap is spread eleven, where the chain stops reporting and argues that four decimal places were doing rhetorical work — that is our reading, not a finding, and it is marked as a leap on the spread rather than in this colophon.
What this deliberately does not re-argue
Too Good to Check owns the taxonomy — the six ways a fact goes wrong — and this chain is one worked case rather than a restatement of it. Five Times a Crab (No. 31) borrows attractor from Lorenz 1963 openly and with the source named; spread two draws that contrast deliberately, because the same paper can be borrowed honestly and dishonestly, and the difference is whether you say which one you are doing.
A rhyme, not a proof. A number given to four decimal places is making a claim about the instrument that produced it. Sometimes there was no instrument.
