Even Fallen Light Glows

on Neruda’s well, a rewrite made in burnout, six words that answered it — and the fact that fallen wood glows in the dark for no reason anyone has been able to establish

There is a well, and it has an instruction attached


In the last year of his life Pablo Neruda wrote a short untitled poem. It opens by saying that if each day falls inside each night, there is a well “where clarity is imprisoned.” Then it tells you what to do about that:

We need to sit on the rim
of the well of darkness
and fish for fallen light
with patience.

It is a famous image and a kind one. It does not pretend the well isn’t there. It doesn’t tell you to cheer up, or to climb, or to stop noticing that the day fell into the night. It says the light is down there, still, and it can be recovered, and the thing that recovers it is patience.

But read the grammar again. We sit. We fish. The poem hands you a rim to sit on and a line to cast — which means the poem has quietly assigned you a role, and there are two roles in it.

There is the one who fishes. And there is the light that fell.

The other role

Patience broke


Deep burnout does something specific to that poem. It doesn’t make the image false. It moves you inside it.

Every line of that is a correct observation, and none of it is self-pity. Read it as a report rather than a mood and it says four separate true things: the rim is distant — a measurement. No casting can reach — a fact about geometry, not about whether anyone cares. Patience broke — the instrument the poem prescribed is the one thing burnout takes first. And then the last line, which is the one that costs something to write down.

What the rewrite discovered is that Neruda’s two roles are assignable, and they are not the same job. Sitting on a rim with patience is work you can do. Being the light at the bottom is not work at all. There is no technique for it. Nobody has ever been advised to do it better.

And once you are the light, every instruction in the poem is addressed to somebody else. That is the part that makes it unbearable — not the dark, but being handed a poem full of advice you have no way to take.

The reply, in full

Look at what the reply refuses to do. It does not argue with a single line of the rewrite. It does not say the rim is closer than it looks. It does not promise that patience comes back. It does not say someone is casting for you right now, or that you will be reached, or that this will pass — all of which would have been kind, and none of which she could know.

It makes a much narrower claim, and the narrowness is why it holds: it is a statement about the light, not about the rescue.

Whether the fishing works is an open question. Whether the light is still light is not. Those had been welded together by the poem — fallen light is for recovering, its whole role is to be fished out — and six words pried them apart.

The rest of this zine is one fact that happens to be shaped exactly like that sentence. It is not offered as proof of it. Nothing on a forest floor can prove anything about a person. It is offered because the fact is true, and strange, and because knowing it changes what the sentence feels like.

The fact this zine runs on

On the forest floor, fallen wood glows


It has a name in English — foxfire — and people have been writing it down for a very long time, because a rotting log giving off a steady green light is not the kind of thing you forget seeing.

The current accounting recognises 132 taxa of bioluminescent fungi, across five lineages: the mycenoid lineage (96 species), Omphalotus (18), Armillaria (14), the Lucentipes lineage (3), and Eoscyphella (1). The count has roughly doubled in fifteen years, mostly because people went looking.

Here is the part that is not a coincidence. Every one of them is an agaric, and they are saprotrophic white-rot decomposers — or, rarely, plant pathogens. There is no glowing fungus that lives some other way.

The thing that glows is the thing that eats fallen wood. This is taxonomy, not metaphor. Every known bioluminescent fungus is a wood or litter decomposer.

So the phrase fallen light is not doing poetic work here. On a forest floor at night, the light is in the fallen thing, and it is there because the fallen thing is being taken apart.

Where the light comes from

The glow is built out of the log


In 2018 a team led by Alexey Kotlobay published the whole pathway — the first, and still the only, completely genetically encodable bioluminescent system in any eukaryote. Four enzymes. It is called the caffeic acid cycle, and it goes like this.

Start with caffeic acid. Hispidin synthase turns it into hispidin. A hydroxylase turns that into 3-hydroxyhispidin — the fungal luciferin, the actual fuel. Luciferase oxidises the luciferin in the presence of oxygen, and out comes caffeylpyruvate and a photon, green, at about 530 nm. Then the fourth enzyme, caffeylpyruvate hydrolase, takes the spent molecule and turns it back into caffeic acid.

Two things about that are worth sitting with.

It is a cycle. The end of the reaction is the beginning of the reaction. Nothing has to be delivered from outside for the next photon.

And caffeic acid is a phenylpropanoid — the same chemical family the wood’s own lignin is built from. The fungus is a white-rot decomposer taking lignin apart. The light is made out of what the fallen thing was made of.

Which part glows

The part that glows is the part nobody sees


Say glowing mushroom and you picture a cap. For the whole Armillaria lineage, that picture is backwards.

In Armillaria, foxfire comes from the mycelium and the rhizomorphs — the threads and the dark bootlace-like cords running through the wood and under the bark. The mushrooms, the visible fruiting bodies, the part that does the reproducing and gets photographed and has a common name, are consistently reported as non-luminescent.

There are known exceptions and honesty requires naming them: A. limonea in New Zealand and an undetermined Brazilian species do form brightly luminous caps. And the pattern is lineage-specific — most mycenoid species glow from both mycelium and fruiting body. But in the lineage that gave English the word foxfire, the rule holds.

The showy, productive, reproductive part is the dark one. The glow is in the network underneath, in the wood, where nobody is looking.

One proposed reason the caps went dark: the luciferin and its precursor are simply absent from the mature mushroom. Not suppressed for a purpose anyone has demonstrated. Just not there.

When it glows

Continuously, on its own clock, with nobody there


In 2015 Anderson Oliveira and colleagues showed that the glow of Neonothopanus gardneri — a large Brazilian species that grows on the leaf litter at the base of babassu palms — runs on a temperature-compensated circadian clock.

Temperature-compensated is the technically demanding part. The rhythm keeps its period even as the temperature changes, which is the signature of a real biological clock rather than a chemical reaction speeding up when it warms. The luciferase, the reductase and the luciferin all cycle.

And the emission itself is continuous — 24 hours a day, modulated by the clock rather than switched on by anything outside.

Which is to say: nothing about the glowing is conditional on a receiver. No creature has to arrive for it to happen. No one has to be walking through that forest. It is not triggered by being approached, it does not brighten for company, and it does not stop when the forest is empty, which is nearly always.

It is not a signal being sent to anyone. It is a thing that is the case.

The honest centre of this zine

Nobody knows what the glow is for


This is the spread that decides whether the rest of it is worth anything, so here is the state of the question rather than the tidy version.

The best-supported story is spore dispersal. Sivinski found that sealed traps baited with glowing fungal material caught more arthropods than unlit traps. Later work in Brazil with lit acrylic mushroom replicas drew significantly more rove beetles, Hemiptera, Diptera and Hymenoptera than unlit ones. Under a closed canopy where there is little wind, insects carrying spades of spores out is a real benefit, and the light plausibly buys it.

And that story does not cover the facts. It explains a cap. It does not explain luminescence in the mycelium and the lower stipe — which produce no spores at all, and which in Armillaria are the only parts that glow.

A serious rival says it is chemistry, not signalling. Luciferins can act as antioxidants, mopping up reactive oxygen species. On that reading the light is a byproduct of staying alive in an oxidising environment while dismantling lignin.

The 2024 review puts it plainly: the hypothesis that fungal bioluminescence is an accidental result of metabolism, rather than any evolutionary benefit, cannot yet be excluded. Perry, Desjardin & Stevani, Journal of Fungi 11(1):19 (2024)

So: it has been observed for millennia, the full chemistry was solved in 2018, and we still cannot say what it is for. It may be for nothing. It glows anyway.

How common it is to stop

It happened once, and has been lost ever since


Phylogenomic work points to a single origin of bioluminescence in the Agaricales, roughly 160 million years ago — and then, in the lineages that descend from it, repeated loss or inactivation.

132 taxa glow. The Agaricales contain many thousands of species. The capacity is ancestral; what has happened to it over and over, in branch after branch, is that it stopped.

This matters here for one reason, and it is a guardrail rather than a flourish. A zine that says even fallen light glows can slide, in about one sentence, into so you had better be glowing.

The phylogeny won’t allow it. Keeping the glow is not an achievement, and losing it is the commonest thing that has ever happened to it. A dark relative of a glowing fungus is not a failed one. It is the overwhelming majority.

Back to the rim

Two roles, and only one of them is a job


Neruda’s poem needs both parts to work: somebody at the rim with patience, and light at the bottom of the well. What the burnout rewrite found is that you don’t get to choose which one you are on a given morning.

And what the forest floor adds is this. The light at the bottom is not idle. It is not waiting to be useful. It is not in a suspended state pending rescue. It is running a four-enzyme cycle that regenerates its own fuel, on its own clock, continuously, out of the substance of the fallen thing — and it is doing that whether or not anyone is at the rim, because emission was never conditional on detection.

If you are the fallen light, glowing is not a task you are behind on. There is nothing to do differently. The casting is somebody else’s work, and it always was — that is not a failure of yours, it is how the poem is built.

This is the point at which solidarity stops being a warm feeling and becomes a division of labour. Helen names what sits at the rim: a community, “a constellation made up of all our unique ways of being” — building networks of care, strengthening constellations of love. Somebody is at the rim. It does not have to be you, today.

And Love You Down To Your Star Stuff is a claim about reach. Down to measures how far the loving goes, not what earns it. The bottom of the well is not out of range of the claim. It is only out of range of the casting.

Not:

Notthat the log is glad it fell. Nothing here says the falling was good, or necessary, or secretly a gift. A fallen tree is a dead tree. The glow is not compensation and does not settle the account.
Notthat burnout is secretly productive. Decay is not a chrysalis. We are not saying you are composting into something better, or that this is your fallow season. Burnout is damage, it is usually caused by conditions somebody chose, and it is not an ingredient.
Notthat you must glow to be worth keeping. Spread ten is in this zine to block exactly that. The glow has been lost far more often than it has been kept, and the dark lineages are not lesser.
Notthat the glow is a signal, so try harder to be seen. The opposite. It runs continuously with nobody there, and the one function anyone has evidence for doesn’t even apply to the part that glows in Armillaria. Visibility is not the test.
Nota promise that you will be reached. Six words about light are not a rescue plan. “Even fallen light glows” is true whether or not the fishing works, which is precisely why it can be said honestly to someone whose patience has broken.
Notnature proving anything about us. A rhyme, not a proof. A fungus in a log says nothing whatsoever about a nervous system, and if you needed mycology to believe you were still here, the problem was never the evidence.
Notthe rewrite corrected. Helen’s line does not overturn Ryan’s poem or tidy it away. It adds a second true thing to the same dark. Both are on this page, unedited, in that order.

That matters: every online copy we could find was an aggregator, and this collection does not cite those for a quotation. The second stanza is quoted in full and the first is described rather than reproduced, deliberately: the translation is in copyright, this is commentary on those specific lines, and reproducing an entire poem is not what commentary needs.

The line. “Even fallen light glows” is Helen Edgar’s, first said in reply to that rewrite in conversation, and later carried into her essay Love You Down to Your Star Stuff: Grief, Hope and Solidarity (More Realms, 23 August 2026), which is also the source of “a constellation made up of all our unique ways of being,” networks of care and constellations of love. The whole zine exists because of six words she wrote back.

The occasion of her essay. Helen wrote it in the days after the death of Professor Jason Arday and a wave of media coverage questioning the validity of neurodivergent diagnoses and identity, following the Clarion Call event held in response. This zine does not narrate or adjudicate any part of that — not the circumstances, not the allegations that preceded it, not the investigation. It is her essay’s occasion, hers to tell, and it is linked here so that it can be. What we take from it is one sentence about light.

Foxfire, historically. That the phenomenon has been recorded for a very long time is stated in general terms on spread five on purpose. What this deliberately does not re-argue

No. 26 A Mycelium and a Rhizome owns the underground network, including the hedge this collection keeps on the “wood wide web”: mycorrhizal symbiosis is settled, but Karst, Jones & Hoeksema (Nature Ecology & Evolution 7, 2023) find the forest-wide claims insufficiently supported. Nothing on this page depends on trees sharing resources through fungal networks — a glowing white-rot decomposer eating a dead log is a different organism doing a different job. No. 56 The Noise Floor owns signal, noise and the thing somebody tries to filter out. No. 59 The Rest You Keep owns rest and Autistic burnout, and this zine leans on it rather than re-arguing it. A rhyme, not a proof. No fact about fungal metabolism establishes anything about a person, and this zine does not offer one as though it did. What the fungi supply is a shape: that something can be fallen, and taken apart, and unwitnessed, and still be emitting — and that whether the emitting is for anything is a question nobody has answered in 160 million years. The consolation is deliberately thin, because a thicker one would be a lie to somebody whose patience has broken. Even fallen light glows. That is the whole claim, and it is enough.
