Both direct quotations on spreads 2 and 5 are verbatim from it.
What is second-hand, and marked as such. The Cesario textbook figures — 20 books sampled 2009–2017, 14 discussing brain evolution, 86% carrying at least one inaccuracy, 2 matching consensus — were taken from summaries of that paper rather than from the paper itself, which we could not open. The abstract, quoted here verbatim, supports the claim in kind but carries no numbers. Treat the counts as provisional. Dates and citations for Broca, Papez, MacLean and Karten were confirmed against reference sources, not against the original nineteenth- and twentieth-century papers.
The disclosure on spread 6 stands on its own. Carl Sagan is one of the two figures this site is built on, and The Dragons of Eden is a principal vector for a model that had already been contradicted. We would rather publish that than keep a clean story.
Prior art here. The Layer We Call Essential (No. 36) is the closest neighbour and does a different job: a ranking that outlived its evidence inside the neocortex, where cetacean brains lack the layer primate neuroscience treats as canonical. This chain is about the ranking between regions. A Field Guide to Nervous Systems already holds the conclusion that the neocortex is not the summit of a hierarchy; what is new here is the history of how the summit got built, and the mechanism that replaces it. Neither is re-argued.
Joints Ten documented, two contested, one leap. The contested pair are Sagan's sole responsibility for the phrase entering common speech, and the competition-for-space explanation, which is a modelling result the authors themselves only say “suggests.” The leap is spread 15, which moves from the model is false to what the model does to a person. That move is ours.
Rails The spine runs two: what was told about the brain and what was observed in it. The shape of the chain is the point — the observed rail is live from 1969, and the told rail keeps running for another fifty-one years without touching it.
