One ocean
of air


There is only one air. The atmosphere is a single, restless, well-mixed body — no walls inside it, no separate airs for separate people. What you breathe out drifts and spreads, and within a year or two it has circled the whole planet. A breath here becomes a breath everywhere.

It mixes so completely that the numbers turn tender. One breath holds something like ten thousand billion billion molecules — so many that, once an old breath has scattered through the sky, your next lungful very likely carries a few atoms once breathed by people long gone, and by strangers on the far side of the Earth right now.

We are not sipping from separate cups. We are all drinking from the same sky.

Your breath is a conversation with the green world. You breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon; leaves do the mirror image — taking in your carbon, handing back oxygen. Inhale, exhale, inhale: the forest is breathing with you, on the opposite beat.

And the oxygen itself is a gift older than animals. For most of Earth's history there was almost none to breathe — until cyanobacteria invented photosynthesis and, across the Great Oxidation Event some 2.4 billion years ago, slowly exhaled an entire breathable sky. Every lungful you take is the exhaust of ancient microbes, kept fresh by every plant since.

Follow the atoms back further and they leave the planet: the oxygen and nitrogen in the air were forged in the hearts of stars. You breathe star stuff that life remade for life.

Shared-air space

The room we
breathe together


When we share a room, we don't just stand near each other — we breathe the same air, in and out, trading it between our bodies breath by breath. This is shared-air space: the literal, physical air we hold in common every time we're together in a room.

And our bodies know it. Nervous systems in the same space read one another without being told — the pace of a breath, the set of a shoulder, the tone of a voice — and start to settle into a shared rhythm. A calm body near you slows your breathing; a braced one quickens it. We co-regulate through the air, mostly below noticing. A steady nervous system nearby can pull yours into rhythm.

So shared-air space is never only chemistry. It is nervous-system space too. Whether the air feels safe — how loud, how bright, how crowded, whether you can breathe easy — decides whether the bodies in it can settle, or must stay on guard. Good air makes room to regulate; hostile air leaves everyone bracing alone.

To share a room is to trade breath — and to tune our nervous systems to each other.

Miners once carried canaries underground. The little birds felt the bad air — the odourless gas, the thinning oxygen — long before any person could. Not because they were weak, but because they were sensitive: their alarm was information, and it saved lives.

Many of us are the canaries of the shared room. We catch the perfume three desks away, the stale unmoved air, the cleaning-chemical sting, the fluorescent hum pressing on the skull. Our discomfort isn't fussiness or fragility — it's an early-warning system telling everyone the air has gone bad.

The old mistake is to blame the bird: you're too sensitive. The wiser move is to read the signal and change the air. What's unbearable for the most sensitive is quietly wearing on everyone — so build it breathable for the canaries, and it's breathable for all.

The habitability question

Habitable —
and for whom?


Shared air is only shared if everyone in it can breathe. So the phrase carries a harder question: habitable, and for whom?

The same room is not the same for everyone. Fragrance, smoke, dust, idling exhaust, an airborne virus — the load lands unevenly, heaviest on disabled, chronically ill, and racialised people, and on those with the least power to leave. One person's ordinary afternoon is another's asthma attack, migraine, or infection.

Too often the fix gets dumped on whoever is harmed: mask alone, sit by the door, send the email that starts "so sorry to be difficult." That's backwards. Breathable air is a commons — a collective responsibility, not a private accommodation one person has to quietly manage.

Solarpunk

Move quietly
and plant things


Here's the hopeful part, and it's buildable. Clean, welcoming air isn't a luxury or a wish — it's infrastructure. Open a window. Add a plant. Wear the mask. Run a Corsi–Rosenthal box — a box fan and a few furnace filters taped into a cube, scrubbing a room's air for the price of a nice dinner. Mutual aid you can build in an afternoon.

This is solarpunk: not "move fast and break things" but move quietly and plant things — a future with a human face and dirt behind its ears, where infrastructure is a form of care and hope is something you assemble, together, out of ordinary parts.

We don't make air habitable by asking people to need less. We make it habitable by building better rooms — and sharing the how.

The oldest breath

The oldest

Take one slow breath. The nitrogen in it is nearly as old as the Earth; the oxygen was exhaled by microbes before there were eyes to see them, and by a tree somewhere this morning. The atoms were cooked in stars that died before the Sun was lit. This air has been storm and birdsong and other people's words — and it will be again.

You don't own it. You couldn't. You hold each breath for a moment and pass it on — to the person beside you, the tree down the street, a stranger not yet born. Breathing is the quietest proof that we were never separate.

So share the air, and make it good. We all breathe the same star stuff, in and out, in common. Love you down to your star stuff.

Whose breath are you holding right now — and who will hold it next?

Where is your most breathable space — a shared-air room, a screen, somewhere else? What makes it so?

In a room you share, who bears the cost of the air — and how could that be carried together?

Shared Air is the twenty-fourth zine in the Stimpunks series, and a companion to Bodies of Water (No. 23): water and air, the two commons we can't opt out of.

Shared-air space is a term coined by Helen Edgar and Ryan Boren; here it stands on its most physical ground — the literal air we share in a room, where nervous systems co-regulate breath by breath (see also The Nearest Body, No. 17). The neurodivergent reframe is ours and our kin's too: sensory sensitivity as an early-warning signal rather than a flaw — the "miner's canary," long taken up by disabled, chronically ill, and environmental-illness communities who name themselves the canaries of a world whose air has gone bad. Together they ask: habitable, and for whom? The ethos is solarpunk: adrienne maree brown, Emergent Strategy (2017), on interdependence and collective care; and the Solarpunk Manifesto ("a future with a human face and dirt behind its ears"; "move quietly and plant things"). The science: the atmosphere as a single well-mixed body, and the shared-breath result; co-regulation and the settling of nervous systems that share a space; the reciprocal carbon–oxygen cycle of respiration and photosynthesis; the Great Oxidation Event, when cyanobacteria first oxygenated the sky (~2.4 billion years ago); the Corsi–Rosenthal box as DIY clean-air mutual aid; and the stellar origin of the oxygen and nitrogen we breathe.
