Stars We Grew Up On

A Star Stuff collection · 2 pieces

The other kind of star. Icons who made weird into a way of being, and let the rest of us find each other.

What holds these together

Here “star” means the other thing, and we are naming that rather than letting it read as drift. These pieces are about icons who made weird into a way of being — Bowie, where unmasking is authorship rather than exposure and many selves are a freedom rather than a symptom; AURORA, the alien who came home by gathering a tribe of Weirdos instead of being cured into fitting.

One of the reasons this project exists is that it is fun, and this is where the fun is loudest. We deliberately did not build a collection called “for fun,” because a bin labelled that way quietly labels everything else homework — and would become the one place where our verify-everything standard could slip. So the fun lives out in the open, in its own collection, held to the same ledger as the rest.

Its companions

The L★S Playlist and the L★S Broadside belong to this collection in spirit and are one click away in the Sound and Print sections of the index.

Not

Not fandom standing in for an argument. Loving an artist is not evidence, and these pieces do not pretend it is.

Not the superpower framing. Neither of these people is proof that difference pays off if you are talented enough. Belonging is not a prize for exceptional output — that is the extraction story, and we refuse it here as everywhere.

The pieces

In the order they were made. The number records when; the collection records what.

Zine No. 12
Turn and Face the Strange
Stimpunks Zines

David Bowie as a way of being star stuff — defiantly, joyfully weird. Unmasking as authorship rather than exposure, the freedom of many selves, bringing the hidden to the front, and authenticity as our purest freedom. From “Changes” and Space Oddity to Blackstar, difference read as direction, not deficit. Eight spreads, each with an embedded Bowie performance, plus a “Not:” refusals set.

Zine No. 13
Warriors and Weirdos
Stimpunks Zines

AURORA as a way of being star stuff — the alien who came home by gathering a tribe of Weirdos, not by being cured into fitting. Feeling alien, the mothership's invitation, naming your people, refusing the cure, stimming in the open, and the way back to Earth. Eight spreads, each with an embedded AURORA performance, plus a “Not:” refusals set.
