It's a reciprocal breath — we exhale what plants inhale, and our oxygen is the exhaust of ancient cyanobacteria (the Great Oxidation Event, ~2.4 billion years ago), forged first in stars. Every room we share is a shared-air space (a term coined by Helen Edgar & Ryan Boren): in it we trade breath and co-regulate, nervous systems settling into a shared rhythm. The neurodiversity turn: many of us are the canaries of that room. Miners carried canaries because the birds felt the bad air first — not because they were weak, but because they were sensitive, and their alarm was information. Our sensitivity to fragrance, stale air, and fluorescent hum is an early-warning system, not a flaw: don't blame the bird, change the air — build it breathable for the canaries and it's breathable for all. Which raises the harder question: habitable, and for whom? The burden of shared air falls unevenly, so breathable air is a commons, not a private accommodation one person quietly manages. Shared-signal space — a term coined by Helen Edgar — is the counterpart to shared-air space: a call, a message, a voice note, a synthesised voice, carrying the rhythm on a signal instead of the air of a room. A voice note is breath, timestamped and sent; co-regulation crosses a screen too — thinner, but real (Porges; Streuber et al.). For many of us, text and AAC aren't a fallback from speech but the clearer channel — thinking time, structure, fewer sensory demands, a record to return to (Howard & Sedgewick) — and AAC is the real communication, not a workaround. Aversion to the phone is information, not fragility. Reachable, and for whom? Try wrapping a sheet of paper smoothly around an orange. It creases, always, and that is not clumsiness — it is **forbidden**. Gauss proved it in 1827 and liked the result enough to call it the *Theorema Egregium*, the remarkable theorem: a surface’s curvature is intrinsic, so bending that doesn’t stretch can never change it. Paper rolls into a tube or a cone because those are still flat in the sense that matters; a sphere is not, and no care gets you there. You have used this today without noticing — fold a pizza slice and the tip stops drooping, because curving it one way forces it to stay straight the other. The consequence: **no flat map of the world can preserve everything**, and every projection must sacrifice area, angle, distance or direction. Mercator chose angle, in 1569, so a constant compass bearing would be a straight line — superb for sailors, and it swells Greenland to the apparent size of an Africa roughly fourteen times larger. The map never says what it chose, and that silence is the scandal rather than the distortion. Then Tissot’s answer from 1859, which is the honest one: you cannot remove the distortion, so *draw* it — a grid of ellipses showing exactly what this map did to this place. And then the turn. An IQ score, a DSM-5 support level, a functioning label: each takes a many-axis person and returns one value, which is not a metaphor but literally a projection — so it must destroy information, the choice of what to destroy is somebody’s, and the number never records it. Worse than a map, in fact: a Mercator keeps every place badly, while a single number doesn’t distort the other dimensions, it **deletes** them. Ask what a summary was optimised for and you learn whose journey it serves — Mercator for sailors, a support level for a budget, a functioning label for a gate. If you must summarise, **publish the indicatrix**: the axes it came from, the range it moves across, what it was built for, reviewed by the person measured. But the physics runs further than the sentence does, and there is another word waiting at the end of it. Romano, Behrendt & Burkert (2024) followed remnants through their long cold decline and found the radiative phase divides into four stages — and the last one they call **the cloud phase**. Not the end phase. Not the dispersal phase. The *cloud* phase: once nothing is driving the shell and the pressure inside has fallen to match the pressure outside, nothing holds the cavity open, so the remnant **falls back into itself** and settles as a chemically enriched cloud. That is a 2024 simulation and it is held here as proposed, flagged in place — because the argument's weight sits somewhere firmer. Murray (2011) measured what clouds actually do: in the Milky Way's most luminous star-forming complexes, the star formation efficiency averages 0.08, so **ninety-two percent of the cloud never becomes a star** — and that is the flattering number, since the Galactic average of 0.005 puts it nearer ninety-nine and a half. A giant molecular cloud lasts 27 ± 12 million years, and the bright episode inside it is short, late, and the thing that tears the cloud apart. Which turns the story the other way round: **the in-between is not the wait between the real states. It is the majority state, by mass and by duration** — and that is a measurement, offered as fact rather than as comfort. Along the way, SN 1987A: at least 0.2 solar masses of dust condensed *inside* its own wreckage, grains that did not exist anywhere before the star died. The debris field is a foundry. Written after Helen Edgar, whose *Supernova Remnant* and *Emergence Point* map the same stage from the inside — burnout as “remnants of my old self entangled in new ways of being,” recovery as re-assembly rather than return, and deterritorialisation as “a soft loosening of pressure.” A cloud never decides to collapse; it is collapsed upon, by gravity and radiation and its neighbours, so the honest question when one of us reorganises is what the pressure is and where it comes from. Held with care throughout: gestation is not a promise of a star, most of the mass never lights, and the claim is only that the cloud is a real state, not a waiting room. Closes on aluminium-26 in the Allende meteorite — something nearby and freshly dead was in our own birth cloud, and *which* star is openly contested fifty years on, so we name the contest instead of picking a winner. Helen Edgar’s thirteenth constellation carries it — “the people who orbit close … who don’t need me to perform and who just ‘get it’.” But before any of that, a correction, because this collection exists partly to take science back from the version that travels furthest. You have met the line *most stars are in binaries — the Sun is the odd one out.* It isn’t so. Charles Lada put the binary statistics beside the stellar mass function in 2006 and published the answer as his title: **most stars are single** — two-thirds of main-sequence systems in the Galactic disk. Multiplicity climbs steeply with mass (~26% of M dwarfs, 44 ± 2% of Sun-like stars, near-total for the most massive), and the galaxy is overwhelmingly made of the small end. **So this zine will not tell you that everybody has their people.** The claim it makes instead is smaller and holds all the way down: where the binding is real, here is exactly what it is. Sirius A and its white-dwarf companion trace a 50.13-year orbit about a barycentre lying in neither star — and equal binding is not equal motion, since the heavier body is displaced less, which is worth saying out loud for anyone who has been told they’re imagining who does more of the moving. Then the hardest spread: bring two stars close and they *do* deform each other — stretched to ellipsoids, drawn to teardrops, finally sharing one dumbbell envelope with matter crossing between them. Proximity is not automatically good. It is the wide pairs — bound out to a parsec, one orbit longer than the whole history of flowering plants — where both keep their shape. And then the turn, which is theorems rather than reading: with two bodies you can write the solution down, but Bruns (1887) proved no further algebraic integrals exist, Poincaré (1890) closed off the single-valued analytic ones, and Sundman’s 1912 series converges far too slowly to use. So these systems are stepped forward numerically, together, and **no one body’s path can be solved on its own and the others added afterward**. That same work is where chaos was found — and the part the popular word destroys is that *nothing is random*: every rule is exact and known, and the system is still unpredictable far out. Read beside the language this community built first — David Gray-Hammond’s *Chaotic Self* (“you can’t unqueer a queer mind”) and *Autistic Rhizome*, with Helen’s *Rhizome Array* and *Mycelial Stars* — and holding the tension honestly rather than smoothing it: the rhizome describes resilience, no node depending on another to exist; the three-body physics describes non-separability while bodies are bound. Both true, neither cancelling. Closes on what actually holds a bound system: no agreement, no shared origin, no similarity, no upkeep, no performance — mutual gravity and nothing else, which means there is no version of a companion star that has to earn it. A camera works by catching light that left the subject, and the event horizon is the surface where every outward direction has stopped existing — so the ordinary way of knowing a thing is simply unavailable, and no better lens fixes it. What the Event Horizon Telescope released in April 2019 and May 2022 is a **shadow**: the set of directions in which light that might have reached you went into the hole instead, ringed by the light that passed far enough out to be bent around and escape. Then the fact this zine is built on, which is exact geometry rather than an impression. For a non-spinning black hole the event horizon sits at 2 *GM/c²* and the edge of the shadow at 3√3 *GM/c²* — so **the dark circle is about 2.6 times wider than the object casting it.** Gravity does not merely hide the thing; it magnifies the hiding. And that magnification is nearly constant across spins and viewing angles (5 ± 0.2 *GM/Dc²*, a spread of about four percent), which is the only reason anyone can work backwards from it. The instrument was the planet: eight radio telescopes at six sites from Spain to the South Pole, observing at 1.3 mm, writing ~3.5 petabytes to helium-filled hard drives that had to be *flown* to two correlators — the Antarctic share stranded until the winter ended. No site saw the ring; no site could have. Four imaging teams then worked **blind to one another**, on two different families of algorithm, because everyone involved knew what they hoped to find. M87\*’s ring came out at 42 ± 3 microarcseconds — an orange, on the Moon. Sagittarius A\* was harder despite being nearer, because its innermost orbit takes about thirty minutes against M87\*’s thirty days: the subject rearranges itself while the shutter is open. Then the turn, in two halves. Some things are known only by their effect on everything around them — monotropism, pain, a sensory environment, an access need — and *the absence of a photograph was never evidence of an absent thing.* But the geometry has a second half, and this piece does not stop before it: **what people see of an unmet need is the disruption, not the need, and the disruption is the larger object**, inflated by every year of bending and masking and quiet accommodation that got folded into it. In physics you can divide the factor out. In a life there is none, which is exactly why you ask. Closes on the guardrail rather than the warm note: unseeable is not unreal, and it is not a blank cheque either — the collaboration pinned Sagittarius A\* to 51.8 ± 2.3 microarcseconds without ever seeing it. In 1604 Johannes Kepler was drawing the geometry of an eclipse and ran out of language. The Sun is not a point of light but a *disc*, so every part of it throws a shadow in a slightly different direction and the result comes out layered: a core where the whole disc is hidden, an outer region where some of it still shines through, and between them no edge at all — just a handover. He had *umbra* for the core. For the handover he had nothing. So in the middle of a diagram in *Ad Vitellionem Paralipomena* he made one: ***quod est inter KE, NM penumbra dicatur*** — let what lies between be called penumbra. The verb is *dicatur*, *let it be called*; that is not a man using a word, it is the word being made because a drawing demanded it. *Paene* plus *umbra*: **almost-shadow**, and what gets named is neither the dark nor the light but the thing between them. Astronomy keeps three zones now, and the third is the one nobody has heard of: the **antumbra**, past the shadow cone’s apex, where the Moon sits *entirely* in front of the Sun — nothing sticking out, nothing off to one side — and it is *still* not a total eclipse, because the Moon is simply too small in your sky to cover what is behind it. Complete obstruction, and the darkness never comes. Two words would have forced that case into one of the other two and both would have been wrong. Then the pair of facts this zine refuses to separate. First, **the partial zone is the enormous one**: the umbral track lands as a stripe a hundred-odd kilometres wide while the penumbra covers thousands, so the overwhelming majority of everyone who has ever seen a solar eclipse saw a partial one. The penumbra is where we live; totality is the exception. Second, and cutting the other way, **99 percent obscured is still daylight.** The corona is only about as bright as a full Moon, and the surviving sliver of photosphere is hundreds to thousands of times brighter than that — so it obliterates the corona and keeps the sky blue. Illuminance falls roughly a hundred-fold in the last two minutes, another order of magnitude in the final *half* minute, more than four orders of magnitude in all. The last increment is not an increment; it is a change of state, and on the far side of it the birds go quiet. Gradient *and* threshold, and any account that can hold only one of them is describing something other than the world — *all gradient* gives you “everyone’s a bit like that” and owes nobody anything; *all threshold* gives you the eligibility form and makes the enormous middle vanish. Two other fields worked this out and reached for Kepler’s word, both times because a binary would cost lives. In 1981 Astrup, Siesjö and Symon found *two* thresholds in ischaemic brain — electrical failure, then ion-pump failure — and named the zone between them the **ischaemic penumbra**: functionally silent, structurally intact, salvageable on reperfusion. That word is the reason acute stroke has a treatment window at all; every intervention is aimed at the penumbra, because the core is past help and the healthy tissue does not need it. And in *Griswold v. Connecticut* (1965) Justice Douglas held that guarantees have “penumbras, formed by emanations” — a borrowing the zine presents alongside its critics rather than beneath them, since a shadow with no measurable edge can be stretched to cover whatever the reader wanted covered. The turn: **partial support is not proportional support.** Ninety percent of a ramp is a wall; captions that drop out for the last two minutes did not deliver 98 percent of the talk; almost accessible is a phase change away from accessible. And the most hopeful sentence here is the least sentimental one, carried over from 1981 — in the penumbra, what looks like loss is often deprivation, and deprivation is reversible if you can see the zone exists and get there in time. **Impaired is not lost.** And the distinction the piece owes, which is the sharpest thing in it: **an umbra is a relation between a source, an obstruction and a place — never a property of the ground it falls on.** The pavement does not *have* an umbra; it is *in* one, and nothing about the pavement is different. So a total blockage of *support* is real and is a fact about an arrangement somebody built and can unbuild. **An umbra located inside a person is a category error.** Functioning labels perform exactly that relocation — *high-functioning*, *severe*, *level 3* take a shadow cast by circumstances and write it on a body — and *“profound autism”*, proposed in the *Lancet* Commission (2021) for people held to be “not able to advocate for themselves,” is the umbra version of the move. Steven Kapp’s 2023 review finds that minimally speaking Autistic people *can* communicate, especially with responsive partners, and *can* self-advocate — which makes that criterion partly a statement about the listener, the method and the room. So *profound* reads deprivation as loss, on a person. Refusing the label is **not** a denial of anyone’s support needs, and the zine says so plainly, crediting Helen Edgar: *“Autistic people with profound and multiple learning disabilities and health needs are not ‘Profoundly Autistic,’ they are autistic with specific needs.”* Thirteen spreads, five diagrams, a “Not:” set that now refuses the bodymind umbra first. The Sun lights one hemisphere of the Moon. Not usually, not on average — *continuously*, without a single interruption that was not an eclipse. Which means a crescent Moon is not a Moon that has had most of its light taken away. It is a **fully half-lit Moon seen nearly edge-on to its own daylight**, and the illuminated hemisphere is exactly as large at new Moon as at full. Nothing dims. Nothing is withheld. Nothing is recovering. What changes over a month is not the Moon but the angle between the Sun, the Moon and *you* — a phase needs three bodies, and one of them is the observer, so there is no fact about “what phase the Moon is in” that does not have your position inside it. The US Naval Observatory is precise about where that leads: New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon and Last Quarter *are defined to occur* when the excess of the Moon’s apparent ecliptic longitude over the Sun’s is 0°, 90°, 180° and 270° — which makes them **instants**, moments with no duration — while waxing crescent, waxing gibbous, waning gibbous and waning crescent are the roughly week-long stretches between them. So the familiar chart of eight equal boxes is really **four knife-edges and four long weeks**, drawn over an illuminated fraction that changes smoothly and without a single step. The boxes are ours; we drew them because a chart needs boxes, and then began reading them back as though we had found them. And because the observer is one arm of the angle, moving *you* changes the answer: at one instant, one lit fraction, one Moon, the crescent is lit along the right edge from Edinburgh, along the left from Melbourne, and underneath near the equator, riding low as a bowl — a *wet moon*, tipped up to hold the rain. Three drawings, three correct answers, nobody seeing an illusion. Then the correction the language has been getting wrong for a century: **there is a far side and there is no dark side.** The far side receives exactly as much sunlight as the face we know, and at new Moon — the one night we can see nothing at all — it is in *full daylight*, the whole hemisphere blazing, entirely unwitnessed. Luna 3 went and looked on 7 October 1959, returning 29 grainy frames of about seventy percent of it after developing the film in a small automated darkroom it was carrying and scanning the negatives home across the vacuum. What came back was not a shadow but a sunlit landscape, crowded with craters, nearly free of maria. It had been like that the whole time. Nor is the lock rigid: libration in longitude and latitude shows us about **59 percent** of the surface rather than half, so even the thing we describe as fixed turns out to be negotiating. The phases are *complements* — our new Moon is a full Earth seen from there, and at every instant the two sum to one whole, so the light is never missing, only ever somewhere you are not standing. The ashen glow on a crescent’s dark limb is that light returned: earthshine, *the old Moon in the new Moon’s arms*, explained by Leonardo around 1506 in the *Codex Leicester*, never published, and slightly wrong (he credited the oceans; it is mostly clouds). The first *published* explanation is credited to Michael Mästlin, who taught Kepler at Tübingen — teacher and student either side of the same refusal to accept a picture with only two states in it. And the month you live by is longer than the orbit it is made of: 27.32 days to complete a full circuit against the stars, but 29.53 to return to the same phase, because Earth moved roughly 27° meanwhile and the alignment slid forward. **You can finish the circle and still not count as returned, because the thing you are measured against keeps moving.** The turn: **waxing and waning are words about the geometry.** They are not words about the Moon, and nothing in the Moon does them. A functioning label is a phase recorded as a substance — it takes the crescent and files it as the whole Moon there is — and “but she seems fine with me” is not a fact about her, it is a report of one angle offered as though it were the object. And the turn is landed in a life rather than left abstract: **Ryan Boren’s own account of being “both r-word and genius” across one school career.** Hyperlexic and Autistic, he would not read aloud — situational mutism and exposure anxiety “locked my lips” — until one day, in a quiet corner with *a semblance of psychological safety*, he read a book cover to cover in a whisper and asked, “Can I go now?” He describes going *“from being a full time r-word to a part time one, depending on who was in the room with me and if I felt safe enough speak”* — a phase, recorded in the vocabulary of proportion, with the observer’s position stated plainly by the person being measured. And his sentence **“Autistic people are psychological safety barometers”** inverts the whole measurement, because a barometer’s reading is a fact about the surrounding air: the instrument was reading the room, and the room wrote the result down as a fact about the child. The guardrail gets its own spread, because the easy version of this argument is cruel: **a crescent really does deliver less light to you.** Measurably. The correction is not that the difference is imaginary but that it is *located in the arrangement* — and the refusals set turns down “just make them feel safe” as a new flattening, since the point is that the variables are in the arrangement, not that there is only one of them. The deficit story ranks all five as thin stand-ins for the real thing: real conversation, real play, real gifts. That story needs them to be structurally deficient forms of connection. Structurally, they are how things get built. **Infodumping:** a star cannot stop telling you what it is made of. Every photon leaving passes out through the star’s own atmosphere and each element takes its specific bite out of the spectrum, so the light arrives carrying a complete, unedited account of the composition, whether or not anyone is reading. Fraunhofer catalogued the dark lines in 1814 without knowing what they were; Kirchhoff and Bunsen established in 1859–60 that each is an element’s fingerprint; Cecilia Payne read hydrogen out of them in 1925 and was pressured to soften a conclusion that was right. **We know we are star stuff because stars will not shut up about themselves** — which makes the unasked-for infodump the entire evidentiary basis of this collection. **Parallel play:** filed for decades as a developmental *stage*, something to be passed through. The sky’s version is the wide binary, and El-Badry, Rix and Heintz catalogue *1.3 million* of them in Gaia eDR3, genuinely bound at separations out to a full parsec — 3.26 light years — neither star perturbing the other, orbits so long no observer will see one completed. Nothing is being worked toward; there is no closer configuration this rehearses. **Wide binaries are not failed close binaries**, they are the commonest stable outcome the galaxy produces. **Support swapping:** W Ursae Majoris contact binaries overflow into a single shared convective envelope, and energy crossing it from the larger star to the smaller holds both within about *200 K* of each other despite a mass ratio near 0.3 — the smaller star running far hotter than its own mass could sustain, because capacity is redistributed by the configuration they are in together. And the complication that keeps it honest, because support swapping is not free: in Algol systems mass flows one way, and the star that was originally more massive gave away so much of itself that it ended up the *less* massive, less luminous, apparently less-developed one. Crawford resolved that paradox in 1955 — **the one that looks behind is the one that gave**, its donation written down as apparent deficiency. **Deep pressure:** the locution with the bluntest name, and nothing fuses unsqueezed. A star simply *is* hydrostatic equilibrium, the balance between gravity pulling in and pressure pushing out, held for billions of years; the solar core sits near 2.4 × 10^16^ Pa, over 200 billion atmospheres. Take the crushing away and there is no carbon, no oxygen, no iron, no calcium in the bone. **The pressure is not a condition the star endures on the way to making elements — the pressure is the manufacturing process.** **Penguin pebbling:** the one most readily filed as sweet-but-slight, and the one with the sharpest physics behind it. Classical planetesimal accretion could not finish a giant-planet core before the gas disk dissipated — the big collisions were simply too slow, and without a core in time there is no atmosphere to capture. Pebble accretion, named by Lambrechts and Johansen in 2012, gets there in 10⁴–10⁶ years, because millimetre-scale pebbles are aerodynamically braked and captured across nearly the whole Hill sphere. The small offerings did not supplement the big collisions; the big collisions could not do the job and the small offerings could. **For those cores, the small offering is not a lesser route — it is the route.** It even stops itself: past ten to twenty Earth masses the core opens a pressure bump and the pebbles are halted before arrival, so even the sky knows when someone has had enough pebbles. Then the turn, printed on the face of the zine rather than buried in a footnote, because five-for-five is *exactly* the shape of a claim that circulates for being tidy rather than true. **The physics does not justify the love.** The universe is not signing anything off, and if it were, its approval would be worthless — a universe that could approve could also decline. This is the same defect the site caught in a sentence of its own: *the universe loves you for it* makes the star stuff the **reason**, and a reason can be revoked, where *love you down to your star stuff* measures how far the loving reaches rather than why it is given. *Down to is not because of.* Amythest Schaber originated the five; Stimpunks popularized them and put them into currency from 2022, substituting *locutions* for *languages*; the term *penguin pebbling* reached us later, through Lindsey; and Helen Edgar of Autistic Realms has developed the framework furthest, including the Penguin Pebbling game built with Ryan Boren. That claim is falsifiable, because a template predicts one specific thing: **sameness**, between individuals and within one individual across attempts. Somebody went and measured whether the sameness is there. Southern Botswana, seven colour-ringed male Southern Masked weavers, territories searched daily so a nest was found at the moment it was started; camcorders square to the branch, three nests filmed per bird — *twenty-one nests* — and the footage coded by a researcher blind to which bird and which date. During the first phase of construction **not one measured behaviour was repeatable within a male**: not the direction he carried the grass, not how long he wove, not which quadrant he favoured, not how often he lost hold. Then the individuality: two birds consistently pushed the first end of a blade into the right side of the nest, two consistently into the left, three had no side at all — and **pooled across all seven, the bias vanished** (*G* = 0.06, *p* = 0.81). Personal handedness with no species handedness underneath it, which is precisely what a template cannot produce. And they *improved*: across a season each male dropped grass less often as he built more nests (*p* \< 0.01), while the birds with the most consistent personal style finished the ring phase fastest (*R*² = 0.25) — a way of one's own was not an eccentricity to be corrected, it was the thing that made him quick. Thirteen years later the harder finding: forty-three white-browed sparrow weaver family groups build architecturally distinct roosts, some with long entrance tubes and some with almost none, stable *across years*, differing between groups whose territories sit metres apart in the same trees, and not explained by weather, body size, tree height or kinship — then the closer, that the styles are **robust to immigration**. Not a template and not the environment: a tradition. Set beside all of this is David Gray-Hammond's account of his own room — the diffuser, the books read several at once, the nothing-tidied-away because some days end in a crash rather than a decision — and his sentence about it: *to most, it appears that I live in a state of chaos… I know where every item I need resides.* The refusals are printed on the zine's face rather than left implied. Not permission from nature, because a universe that could approve could also decline, and *down to is not because of*. Not instinct versus learning. Not a clever-animal story, since the authors themselves attribute the improvement to increasing dexterity and say any role for cognition still needs demonstrating. And the honest one: **not every mess is a nest** — burnout collapses the architecture, and the ruins look from the doorway exactly like the curated version. What the science kills is narrower and sturdier for being narrow: the inference that **an order you cannot read is not an order**. Two centuries of confident observers looked at a nest and saw a machine executing, and were describing the limits of watching while calling it a fact about the bird. **Nesting** is David Gray-Hammond's; **lilipadding** is **Tanya Adkin and David Gray-Hammond**'s, with Adkin's name first on both pieces that set it out — a first draft credited it to him alone, and the colophon says so. More than eighty per cent of a hatchling's calcium came from the wall it broke. The word is borrowed and this zine says so.

In the trans community, *getting your egg cracked* is the moment somebody knows and accepts that they are trans; the therapist Essy Knopf extended the term to Autistic and ADHD experience in 2025, and credited its origin himself. The word is borrowed and this zine says so — no individual coined it, and Evelyn Bauer's history for *Them* traces the earliest documented use to an Urban Dictionary entry in August 2016 and finds even Susan Stryker unable to date her own first encounter with it. What the zine argues with is not Knopf but what happens to the metaphor afterwards, when repetition flattens it into a **door**: one threshold, crossed once, a settled person on the far side. So we checked it against some eggs. **The shell does not get thinner.** From about day eleven the chorioallantoic membrane dissolves calcium out of the wall, and Halgrain and colleagues measured the result — thickness between day 0 and day 15 not significantly different (*p* = 0.110), breaking strength between day 11 and day 15 significantly reduced (*p* = 0.007). Measure it and nothing is happening. Weigh what it can bear and everything is. *Nobody could see it; there was nothing to see.* Then where the calcium goes: the shell supplies **more than eighty per cent** of all the calcium a chick embryo gets, roughly 2.2 grams, and at hatch the skeleton holds about three quarters of the calcium in the whole animal. The container becomes the frame, by mass, and there is no moment where one ends and the other begins — and since collagen is piezoelectric, as Iwao Yasuda showed in the 1950s, the wall you broke is now the part of you that turns pressure into charge. Third, the messy middle is a documented stage: at **internal pipping** the beak enters the air cell and the lungs begin working while the shell is still whole, a staged handover Margaret Vince traced in three parts. From outside, an unmarked egg. Fourth, quail embryos **click**, and an egg set in a clutch a day late speeds up and hatches with the others — while a slower click rate retards the ones ahead. Synchronisation runs both ways: *the ones ahead slow down and wait.* And the close, from Mair and colleagues' 2026 study of 225 posts: not a door but an oscillating **Grief, Relief, and Belief Cycle**, whose fourth theme is post-diagnosis burnout, with the authors asking that identification be treated as a first step rather than a terminal component of a service. The refusals are on the zine's face. Not cracking somebody else's egg — the egg tooth is on the inside of the shell, and you can only click. Not the person before was fake. Not a graduation. Not permission from nature, because chick embryos have no identities and *down to is not because of*. The most famous rotation-curve paper never uses the word *dark*. It says mass lies beyond the optical image — exactly what was measured.

Helen Edgar’s first constellation, of twenty, is the **Dark Matter Field** — “the heavy darkness of neuronormativity… the accumulated weight we carry around of a world that does not meet our needs.” Nos. 45 and 46 both said in their colophons that this naming was being kept back. This is the piece that spends it, and the order of borrowing is stated on spread two: **her naming came first**, the physics is set beside it afterward, and the reverse move is the one this collection exists to refuse. Then ninety-three years of the most careful attribution on record. **Fritz Zwicky (1933)** applied the virial theorem to seven galaxies in the Coma cluster and found the average density “would have to be at least **400 times greater** than that derived on the basis of observations of luminous matter” — he had the number, he had the phrase *dark matter*, and he closed the section by calling it “**an unsolved problem**.” *The first thing a careful person does with a discrepancy is decline to place it.* Forty-seven years later the famous paper comes apart under reading. **Rubin, Ford & Thonnard** (*ApJ* 238, 471, 1980) do not report flat rotation curves: “Most rotation curves are *rising slowly* even at the farthest measured point,” and the negative claim is narrower still — “Neither high nor low luminosity Sc galaxies have *falling* rotation curves.” Their conclusion says *where* and refuses to say *what*: “must have significant mass located **beyond the optical image**.” **The word “dark” never appears in the abstract**, and the subject heading as printed is *galaxies : internal motions*. In 2000 Rubin was still withholding: “Surprisingly, we cannot yet rule out a modified gravitational potential, rather than dark matter” — and “it is **folly** to believe that we know what a galaxy is, while the extent, the density distribution, and the composition of ≥90% of its mass are still a dark mystery.” **Then the zine corrects itself on the page.** It was proposed on the premise that the field is “never directly observed, only detected by its distorting effect,” with lensing offered as proof of that — but lensing is the instrument that made the direct detection. **Clowe et al. (2006)** measured an “8-sigma significance spatial offset” in the Bullet Cluster that “cannot be explained with an alteration of the gravitational force law.” The premise had to go, and spread seven keeps the correction rather than quietly dropping it. What is still open is the *particle*, not the mass: LZ and XENONnT have both come up empty, and the searches are widening to axion-like particles and dark photons. Two claims held apart, because collapsing either one is the misuse. The argument itself is structural. A gap between what a model predicts and what a body does can live in exactly three places — the **mass**, the **law**, or the **measurement** — and astronomy has argued all three in public, with rivals named and nulls published. Asked about a child, the same question was closed on day one and the residual placed in the child: not the fluorescent hum, not the unannounced transition, not the six hours of masking, not Milton’s double empathy problem. **The claim is precise and the sloppy version is not ours** — not that the environmental attribution is obviously right, but that *it was never treated as an open question*. No rival funded, nothing in the criteria reading “we cannot yet rule out.” Where the analogy breaks is stated at full strength rather than hedged: **neuronormativity is unmarked, not unobserved**. It is written down — criteria, intervention targets, the compliance goal on an education plan, “culture fit,” the seating chart. Dark matter is hidden by nature; this is hidden by convention, and a convention is a decision that can be read and changed this year. The close is the sharpest thing here. Take the identical fact — unseen mass is most of what holds a galaxy together — and it reads just as naturally as the co-regulation nobody logs and the care work nobody bills. Same evidence, opposite moral, and **the physics adjudicates neither**: if one fact can carry two opposite morals, the moral was never in the fact. Somebody chooses, and has to own the choosing. Refusals on the face: not dark matter proving anything about a nervous system; not an argument against evidence, since careful public attribution is what we are asking *for*; not modified-gravity advocacy; not “you are mysterious,” because Rubin’s *folly* line is about a galaxy; not the inspiration story about Rubin, since borrowing it would do to her what gets done to us; and not Helen’s reading corrected. A category boundary that publishes its own provenance, fences its own range, names its dissenters, and can be appealed — and lost. Ask that of a cut-off score.

Every kid who loved **Brontosaurus** got told *actually, it’s Apatosaurus*, and the lesson attached was that the enthusiasm was the amateur part. Here is the paper trail. Marsh named *Apatosaurus ajax* in **1877** and *Brontosaurus excelsus* in **1879**; Riggs folded the second into the first in **1903** on differences recorded as “usually considered insufficient to justify generic distinction.” *Insufficient* is a quantitative word with no quantity behind it — and for eighty years nobody could say insufficient *by what measure*, because the measure did not exist. Then **Tschopp, Mateus & Benson** built one, across **298 open-access pages**, scoring **81 specimens** against **477 morphological characters**. Their methods section opens by conceding the soft part: separation “is somewhat arbitrary, in particular in paleontology, where no tests exist for the biological species concept,” and “subjectivity of these interpretations is especially great.” So they published the **calibration**, which is the spread this zine exists for. They counted the differences between pairs *everybody already agreed* were one genus — twelve between *A. ajax* and *A. louisae*, eleven between *D. carnegii* and *D. hallorum* — and set the bar one step past the largest agreed gap: “a minimum of **13 changes** is herein considered necessary for generic separation.” Six for a species, deliberately generous, because “a wider margin is preferred herein in order to be more cautious.” *You can argue with a number whose derivation is printed. You cannot argue with insufficient.* Then the rarest move in the story: they fenced their own instrument. The numbers “**cannot be applied to any other analysis, even of the same clade**” — a threshold that declares its own range of validity, in advance, in the paper that depends on it. By that ruler Brontosaurus holds its own genus after 112 years, and even the headline is hedged in the abstract: “considered valid *by our quantitative approach*.” The method was not a rescue machine — the same pass dissolved “*Dinheirosaurus*” into *Supersaurus* and raised *Galeamopus*, cutting against its makers’ own earlier work. **And then they filed an appeal and lost.** The type specimen anchoring the whole genus *Diplodocus* is a partial tail the paper calls a *nomen dubium*, leaving “the otherwise well-known genus *Diplodocus* typified by a dubious species.” They petitioned the ICZN to move it — **Case 3700**, with a comment period and supporters — and on the last day of 2018 the Commission said no: **Opinion 2425**, *Diplodocus longus* maintained. Refused in print, with a number on it, by a body whose refusals you can look up and cite. Set the five properties beside the label on a child: published provenance, a declared range, named dissent (Prothero, four months later, under his own name), a route of appeal, a citable ruling. A cut-off score arrives already applied, says nothing about who chose it or where it stops meaning anything, and then travels across ages, countries and purposes it was never built for. *The ruler that would not travel one clade sideways gets less latitude than the one we hand a five-year-old for life* — and there is no Case 3700, nowhere to file, no numbered Opinion. The paperwork is not always kind either, and spread eight says so: **Oviraptor** means *egg seizer*, named in 1924 for a clutch it was brooding, corrected by Norell and colleagues in 1994 and 1995, and stuck with the libel forever under nomenclatural priority. Two ways a label outlives its refutation — **priority**, a rule written down, and **repetition**, which needs no rule at all. Only one admits it. Then the turn: *Velociraptor* was feathered, on the evidence of quill knobs on the ulna, and it is smaller and stranger than the movie and closer to a bad-tempered rooster, because **birds are dinosaurs**. Not one of these corrections made an animal less interesting. Every one made it stranger. *The animals were never wrong about themselves; we were wrong about them, and being wrong out loud is what let them get better.* And 298 pages is not what growing out of it looks like — it is what it looks like when nobody does. What *get serious* asks for is never depth, which monotropic attention already has; it is **convertibility**. Not that we stop being absorbed, but that we stop being absorbed for free. Bettin’s inversion holds: retained neoteny is not developmental lag but a distributed adaptive capacity that keeps a group from setting into whatever the highest-ranking person already believes. The close earns the collection. *Apatosaurus louisae* is estimated at about **41 tonnes** of calcium phosphate, and calcium and phosphorus are made in stars — so a sauropod walked the Late Jurassic on a skeleton of dead stars, every atom second-hand and every atom still in circulation. Bone is piezoelectric, as Yasuda showed, so those animals were writing their own skeletons by walking on them; that this was true of sauropod bone is marked as an *inference*, not a measurement. And Sander and sixteen co-authors still report “no direct evidence on sauropod food and food processing” — the biggest animals ever to walk, and we do not know how they ate, which never made them less real. Refusals on the face: not an argument against evidence or diagnosis, since published provenance is what we are asking *for*; not “categories are meaningless,” because thirteen is a real bar doing real work; not a claim that taxonomy is like being labelled; not “the scientists were wrong and the kid was right,” because being corrected was never the injury and *not being correctable* is; not a demand that every label be revoked, since some of us want ours; and not the naturalistic fallacy, because *down to is not because of*. Light leaves with nothing written on it, so every name in astronomy is an arrival record and never an origin record. Seven measured delays, and what they say about the observer.

**Details**

The physics is one sentence and it does all the work: **light travels at a finite speed and leaves with nothing written on it.** Sunlight is eight minutes and twenty seconds old when it reaches your face; Proxima Centauri’s is 4.2 years old; Andromeda’s is 2.5 million. A photon carries a wavelength and a direction and *not a discoverer* — everything a star will say about itself is complete at emission, and the name gets attached at the far end, by whoever happened to be standing there with an instrument. Astronomy is honest about this and has a word for the landing: **first light** is the moment a new telescope opens its eye, and nobody has ever thought the telescope invented the galaxy in the frame. So **a name in astronomy is an arrival record, never an origin record** — and almost everything in this zine is those two things being confused, with a person in place of a star. **Priority** is the version written down: credit goes to whoever publishes first, and a comet takes the name of whoever files. Halley earned his fairly — he worked out that the comets of 1531, 1607 and 1682 were one object and in 1705 predicted its 1758 return — and its passages had been recorded for more than two thousand years before him. The rule never claimed otherwise. *The trouble starts when the register stops saying what it is a register of.* Then **1925, twice.** In Cambridge, Massachusetts, **Cecilia Payne** submitted the thesis showing the stars are overwhelmingly hydrogen and helium; Henry Norris Russell told her it was clearly impossible, and she published with a line saying the abundance was “almost certainly not real.” Russell restated the conclusion in 1929. In **Moscow** — not Kiev, and the zine keeps its own corrected error on the page rather than fixing it quietly — **Grunya Sukhareva** finished a clinical description of six boys at the hospital-school she had founded in 1921, recording the aloneness, the flattened expression, the narrow blazing interests *and the giftedness underneath*. Russian in 1925, German in 1926, **English in 1996**. Seventy-one years, and half a century after Kanner’s and Asperger’s names were fixed to what she had described. Spread five is the structural spine: **a distance is a delay**, and the same quantity exists for a finding. Seven crossings, each an interval between two dated events. **168 years** from Caroline Herschel’s Royal Astronomical Society Gold Medal in 1828 to the next woman’s, Vera Rubin’s, in 1996. **123 years** from Matilda Joslyn Gage mapping the pattern in *Woman as Inventor* (1870) to Margaret Rossiter naming it the **Matilda effect** (1993) — *the name for late naming was itself a hundred and twenty-three years late,* and Rossiter did the one thing the pattern does not do by itself: she looked back down the beam and put the earlier name on it. **71 years** to English. **42 years** from Annie Jump Cannon joining the Harvard College Observatory in 1896 to Harvard giving her a regular appointment in 1938. **7 years** from the first pulsar to a Nobel that went to Hewish and Ryle. **4 years** from Payne to Russell. And Mittag-Leffler’s 1925 letter intending to nominate **Henrietta Leavitt**, who had died in 1921 — there was never a nomination. None of those is a claim about intent; each measures a gap, the way you measure a parallax, and *the delay tells you about the observer, not the object.* The Bell Burnell spread is deliberately precise where the popular telling is not: she read roughly **96 feet of chart paper a day**, found a signal too regular to be noise, and is the **second author** on Hewish, Bell, Pilkington, Scott & Collins, *Nature* 217, 709 (1968), period 1.3372795 seconds. She was not written out of the paper. She was written out of the prize. And the pulses had been arriving the whole time — what 1967 changed was the listening. Refusals on the face, because six women is six situations and flattening them would be the second erasure: **not** that gender explains Sukhareva, since Sher & Gibson give her Jewish identity, her Russian nationality and her Russian- and German-language publication alongside it, and raise the possibility that Asperger omitted her deliberately under Nazi-era antisemitism; **not** that a missed prize and Stalinist violence are the same harm, since she was attacked at the 1951 Pavlovian Sessions and colleagues around her lost their lives; **not** that every woman here was silenced alike, since Cannon took the Henry Draper Medal in 1931 and funded the award whose first recipient in 1934 was Payne-Gaposchkin — honoured from outside, unpromoted at home, and she is the exception *and* forty-two years of the rule; **not** that recognition and justice are the same, since Herschel took the medal in 1828 and stayed her brother’s assistant on the payroll; **not** that these men stole, since Russell cited Payne and reported “very gratifying agreement” — the mechanism varies every time and the direction does not; **not** an argument against priority or citation; and **not** the naturalistic fallacy. Then the turn that earns the collection. The six children Sukhareva wrote down were **Autistic**, and so were Autistic children in 1895 and 1795 and every year nobody was taking notes. *1925 is not when we started; it is when somebody was standing there with an instrument.* A diagnosis is an arrival record, and the criteria say so out loud — the DSM-5 requires symptoms “present in the early developmental period” while conceding they “may not become fully manifest until social demands exceed limited capacities, or may be masked by learned strategies in later life.” **The manual is describing light-travel time.** Somebody diagnosed at forty-seven has not been Autistic since they were forty-seven; the paperwork is forty-seven years old and the light is not. *You can’t have been, you’d have been picked up* is that confusion said out loud, and it made the receiver the origin for girls, for Black and brown children, for anyone whose flavour of it stayed indoors. There is a version of this history in which the first thing anybody read about us was written by a woman who noticed the giftedness in the same paragraph as the difficulty — because she did, and it did not arrive in time to set the tone. The close: everything heavier than hydrogen and helium was cooked inside stars and scattered when they died, and the carbon, oxygen and calcium in you crossed several billion years to arrive **with no name attached and no signature required**. The calcium works whether or not Payne was believed in 1925. Publishing Sukhareva’s name does not reach her — she died in 1981 — it fixes *our* instrument, the one we are using on the next person whose account arrives in the wrong language or the wrong decade. *Down to* is not *because of*. Eleven spreads, five diagrams. **The light was never wrong. The paperwork was late.**

*On Neruda’s well, a rewrite made in burnout, six syllables that answered it — and the fact that fallen wood glows in the dark for no reason anyone has been able to establish.*

Every known bioluminescent fungus is a white-rot decomposer, so the thing that glows is the thing that eats fallen wood. After 160 million years, nobody can say what the glow is for.

Three texts and one fungus. Neruda’s untitled poem in *El mar y las campanas* (1973) says that if each day falls inside each night there is a well “where clarity is imprisoned,” and instructs you to *sit on the rim of the well of darkness and fish for fallen light with patience* (William O’Daly’s translation, *The Sea and the Bells*, Copper Canyon, 1988, pp. 94–95 — read at the printed page, because every online copy is an aggregator). Read the grammar and the poem has quietly handed out **two roles**: the one who fishes, and the light that fell. **Ryan Boren’s rewrite, made in deep Autistic burnout, moves the speaker into the well** — *the rim is distant, no casting can reach, patience broke* — and the discovery inside it is structural rather than emotional: sitting on a rim with patience is work you can do, being the light at the bottom is not work at all, and once you are the light *every instruction in the poem is addressed to somebody else.* **Helen Edgar answered in six syllables: even fallen light glows.** What makes the reply hold is what it refuses — it does not say the rim is closer, that patience returns, or that you will be reached. It is a claim about the light, not about the rescue, and it pries apart two things the poem had welded together. Then the fact. **Foxfire.** Perry, Desjardin & Stevani (*J. Fungi* 11(1):19, 2024) recognise **132 taxa** across five lineages — Mycenaceae 96, Omphalotaceae 18, Physalacriaceae 14, Lucentipes 3, Cyphellopsidaceae 1 — and every one is an agaric **saprotrophic white-rot decomposer**, or rarely a plant pathogen. There is no glowing fungus that lives some other way, which makes *the thing that glows is the thing that eats fallen wood* a statement of taxonomy rather than a figure of speech. The glow is built out of the log: the **caffeic acid cycle** runs caffeic acid to hispidin to **3-hydroxyhispidin**, the luciferin, which luciferase oxidises with oxygen to caffeylpyruvate and a photon near **530 nm** — and then caffeylpyruvate hydrolase turns the spent molecule *back into caffeic acid*. The end of the reaction is the beginning of the reaction. And in the *Armillaria* lineage the part that glows is the **mycelium and rhizomorphs**, threads inside the wood, while the mushrooms are consistently non-luminescent: the showy reproductive part is the dark one. Emission runs **continuously, on a temperature-compensated circadian clock** (Oliveira et al., *Curr. Biol.* 25:964–968, 2015), so nothing about it is conditional on a receiver — it does not brighten for company and does not stop when the forest is empty, which is nearly always. **The honest centre is spread nine: nobody knows what it is for.** Lit mushroom models draw more beetles, flies, bugs and wasps than unlit ones, which is real evidence for spore dispersal — and it explains a cap, not the mycelium and lower stipe, which make no spores at all. A live rival says the luciferin is an antioxidant and the light is a byproduct of handling reactive oxygen while dismantling lignin. The review states outright that a non-adaptive, accidental origin **cannot yet be excluded**. Spread ten is the guardrail: bioluminescence arose **once**, about 160 mya, and has been *lost or inactivated* in lineage after lineage since — so keeping the glow is not an achievement and losing it is the commonest thing that ever happened to it. A zine that says *even fallen light glows* is one sentence away from *so you had better be glowing*, and the phylogeny is what blocks it. The turn: if you are the fallen light, glowing is not a task you are behind on, and the casting is somebody else’s work — which is where solidarity stops being a warm feeling and becomes a **division of labour**. Helen’s constellation is what sits at the rim. Refusals on the face: **not** that the log is glad it fell; **not** that burnout is secretly productive, because decay is not a chrysalis and burnout is damage somebody’s conditions caused; **not** that you must glow to be worth keeping; **not** that the glow is a signal so try harder to be seen; **not** a promise that you will be reached; **not** nature proving anything about a nervous system; and **not** the rewrite corrected — both poems are on the page, unedited, in order. The consolation is deliberately thin, because a thicker one would be a lie to somebody whose patience has broken. Twelve spreads, one diagram. A rhyme, not a proof.

*On the bow that no two people can share, the man who proved it in 1267 with an astrolabe and no theory at all, and why being unable to show someone a real thing was never a reason to doubt it.*

A rainbow is a circle centred on the shadow of your own head, so there are as many bows as there are observers — and Roger Bacon used that un-shareability as his *evidence*, not his problem.

**Details**

The oldest correct thing anybody wrote down about a rainbow is not about colour and not about water. **It is about where you are standing.** Around 1267, in the experimental-science part of the *Opus Majus*, Roger Bacon took an astrolabe outside, measured the height of the sun against the height of a bow, and reported that a rainbow can never stand more than **42 degrees** above the horizon. He then wrote something far stranger, and wrote it as a finding: *“From these facts we learn by experiment that there are as many bows as there are observers.”* He gave the test, too — two people look north at the bow, one walks west and the bow goes west with him, the other walks east and *his* bow goes east. Hence *“it is impossible for two observers to see one and the same bow, although an ignorant person does not grasp this fact”*; and the reason, which is this zine’s title: *“the shadow of each observer divides the arc of the rainbow into two equal parts.”* He put the apex of his cone *at the eye* and ran its axis to *“the nadir of the sun”* — the antisolar point — and **he did all of this with no theory of refraction whatsoever**, forty years before anyone described what happens inside a drop and three hundred and seventy before Descartes could calculate it. Roland Stull’s *Practical Meteorology* says the same things now: rainbows are *“centered on the antisolar point, which is the point corresponding to the shadow of your head or camera,”* and *“different observers see different rainbows caused by different light rays interacting with different raindrops”* — red edge 42.7°, violet ~40°, n = 1.3315. But the spread that earns the piece is the **inversion**: Bacon did not treat the privacy of the bow as a puzzle to explain away, he treated it as data, and *ran controls* in 1267. A lit cloud takes a colour that *“appears the same to different observers, nor does it follow the motion of the observer”*; a fish or a stick seen through water is displaced but *“does not follow the observer if he recedes”*; the bow follows you at the speed of *“a man running or riding as fast as possible.”* Three phenomena, one question, one odd answer — and from the odd answer he concluded that the bow must be made of rays that bounce. He landed on reflection alone and was wrong, or badly incomplete; the method was right and the geometry survived into a textbook you can download today. **The feature that makes a rainbow impossible to hand to anybody is the feature that told us what a rainbow is.** Then the harder claims. Les Cowley: *“Rainbows possess neither distance nor linear dimension”* — it behaves as though at infinity and *“cannot be touched, tickled, walked around or driven through”*; a direction, not a place. Your two pupils sit 63 mm apart, each the apex of its own cone collecting its own drops, so **you are not looking at one rainbow with two eyes** — which closes the standard exit from our own umwelt argument in No. 15, because here the perceivers are identical and *position alone is sufficient*. And the conditions: sun behind you, rain ahead, unobstructed, sun under 42° or the whole ring sinks below the horizon — Bacon worked the arithmetic for the latitude of Paris (41°12′ at equinox noon) and for a latitude near the Tropic of Cancer, where *“no rainbow can be formed at any noon of the entire year.”* Rain falling, sun blazing, eyes perfect, and no bow: nothing wrong with the observer, and the arrangement is adjustable. The turn: in the 759 years since Bacon wrote it down, **nobody has ever concluded that rainbows are not real because they cannot be shown to a second person.** No one demands corroboration. That courtesy is not extended evenly, and *if it were real you could show me* has a four-hundred-page textbook counterexample in the sky twice a month. Six refusals on the face, the first being the one that matters: *not* that everybody sees it differently so who’s to say — **different bow, same physics**, 42.7° for everyone, always, and the most private phenomenon here is also one of the most rigidly law-bound. Also not a claim on the Pride rainbow, which already means something specific in our house. Two claims are marked on the page as ours rather than anybody’s measurement. Eleven spreads, six figures, a “Not:” refusals set. **A rhyme, not a proof.**

*On the raindrop that makes both bows at once, the lab that tried to erase both of you, and why *entwined* turns out to be a claim about the source rather than a feeling about the self.*

A single drop makes both arcs of a double rainbow simultaneously, from one beam — so neither is the second one. And the suppression of queer and Autistic children came out of one lab, with one name on both papers.

**Details**

**A double rainbow is not two rainbows.** Roland Stull’s *Practical Meteorology*: *“a single raindrop produces both: entering rays undergo either one internal reflection (primary) or two internal reflections (secondary) before exiting.”* One drop, one beam, both arcs, at the same instant — which means the outer bow is never absent, only sometimes outshone. The extra bounce reverses the colours, so red sits outermost on the inner bow and innermost on the outer one and **the two reds face each other** across Alexander’s dark band (Alexander of Aphrodisias, c. 200 CE) — a band that is not a wall between them but the region *neither* arc reaches, the shadow left where the light piled up elsewhere. The zine states the awkward number rather than hiding it: the secondary is **43% as bright**, because its light must survive two internal reflections instead of one. *Dimmer is a fact about path length, not about rank.* **So spread five refuses the obvious move and will not hand you one arc for being queer and one for being neurodivergent** — assign the arcs and one of them is the 43% one, and the shape does the ranking however carefully you write around it. The drop never divided them. *Primary and secondary are our words, for our convenience; the drop has never heard them.* Then the turn, where *entwined* stops being a warm word and becomes a citation. In 1974 the *Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis* published Rekers & Lovaas, *“Behavioral Treatment of Deviant Sex-Role Behaviors in a Male Child”* (7(2), 173–190), whose abstract states its own aim as *“the primary prevention of adult transsexualism or similar adult sex-role deviation.”* Thirteen years later the same O. Ivar Lovaas, at the same university, published the 1987 autism paper. **One name, on both.** Our own [Eight Tenths of a Second](https://starstuff.earth/eight-tenths-of-a-second-zine.html) (No. 38) follows the behaviourism chain to a spread called *“A room with a child in it”* and stops at that door; this zine opens it and reports that there was more than one kind of child at the table. The 1974 paper was read at the paper — PMC holds it as scanned images, so the PDF was obtained and read, which is how the circulating pseudonym “Craig” turns out to be **“Kraig”**. He was four years and eleven months old. His mother was *“trained to be his therapist.”* Red and blue poker chips: blue toward a candy bar, red for response cost, timeout, *“or (c) physical punishment by spanking from the father.”* And the sequencing detail that undoes you — it was judged *“clinically safer”* to run the chips on ordinary household behaviour first, so **the same red chip that had meant *tracking dirt on carpet* was then extended to playing with girls, playing with dolls, and feminine gestures.** His name was Kirk Andrew Murphy; he died by suicide in 2003, reported here as the behaviour-analytic literature reports it, *without a causal claim attached*, because his family’s grief is not a rhetorical device. *JABA* issued a Statement of Concern in 2020 and did not retract, reasoning that *“the available evidence does not make it clear that the original study was unethical by the standards of that day”*; Austin H. Johnson answered in 2022 that it should be retracted. **Fifty-two years, and it stands.** Neuroqueer credited properly — Nick Walker, independently Athena Lynn Michaels-Dillon, with Remi Yergeau’s *neurological queerness* — and Gwen Nelson, who created Autistic Pride Day, is a trans woman. Seven refusals, including that queer and Autistic experience are not the same experience, that today’s ABA is not 1974, and that the claim is *lineage*. Twelve spreads. **A rhyme, not a proof** — the history is the argument; the rainbow is only how we noticed what shape it was.

*On escape velocity as a coasting number, the places inside a well that cost nothing to sit in, and a telescope built so that it *cannot brake*.*

Escape velocity is defined for a trajectory with no engine running — and it falls as you rise. Two of the five Lagrange points cost nothing at all to occupy, and which two depends on the system, never on the occupant.

**Details**

**Escape velocity is a coasting number, and almost every use of it drops the condition that makes it true.** The 11.186 km/s quoted for Earth is v~esc~ = √(2GM/r), and it is defined for a *ballistic* trajectory — the speed you need if nothing is pushing you afterwards. Two things follow that the motivational reading gets backwards. First, the figure is **local**: it falls as the square root of one over distance, so it is 7.91 km/s at two Earth radii and 5.59 at four. The requirement is not a property of what you are leaving; it is a property of where you are asking from. Second, it says nothing whatever about anything under thrust, which is not a loophole but the scope of the definition. **Dawn is the demonstration.** On 5 September 2012 it left Vesta not by jumping from the floor but by climbing on ion thrust until the bar had come down to meet it — JPL’s own words, *“spiral away as gently as it arrived”*; Marc Rayman’s, *“Thrust is engaged, and we are now climbing away from Vesta atop a blue-green pillar of xenon ions.”* The zine is careful to say on the spread, not only in the colophon, that Dawn *did* eventually cross the local threshold; the claim is that it never had to make the jump from the bottom. Then the half the piece was actually built for. **A gravity well contains places that cost nothing to occupy.** Of the five Lagrange points, L1, L2 and L3 are saddle points and unstable; **L4 and L5 are genuinely stable** — not balancing, not holding on — whenever the mass ratio clears a threshold. That threshold is **μ~G~ = (1 − √(23/27))/2 = 0.0385208965…**, the smaller root of 27μ(1−μ) = 1, and here the zine performs a *precedence correction*: it is usually called Routh’s value after his 1875 paper, and Bruno Sicardy (CMDA 107, 2010) says it *“should actually be called Gascheau’s value in view of the precedence of his work”* — Gabriel Gascheau, professor at Toulouse, published in Paris in **1843**, thirty-plus years earlier. A piece arguing that the environment decides the outcome had no business misattributing the theorem that proves it. And the theorem *is* the argument: **the same rock, unchanged in every respect, stays at Jupiter’s L4 for the age of the solar system and wanders off from the L4 of a pair whose masses are too even.** Nothing about the rock did it. About 10^5^ Jupiter Trojans larger than a kilometre are sitting there now (Bottke, Marschall, Nesvorný & Vokrouhlický, 2023) — and, kept deliberately, they were *captured* during the giant planets’ migration, so the stable place was not where they started and they did not choose it. Then the case that closes the loophole: **even the unstable places are cheap.** Petersen (AAS 19-806, 2019): *“The dynamical region about the SEMB L2 point is inherently unstable”* — and JWST holds it, per Rigby et al. (2023), on burns *“scheduled every three weeks…with typical durations of tens of seconds,”* of which *“three…were skipped because the computed correction was negligibly small.”* **The maintenance schedule for an unstable position includes doing nothing.** The final spread is the one the piece exists for: thermal limits forbid sunward-facing thrusters, so *“no direct observatory-to-Sun vector maneuver directions are allowed”* — **Webb cannot brake**, drifting past L2 would end the mission, and so every burn is deliberately thrown *short*. Nobody calls that the telescope’s failing; the whole trajectory was designed around it, at a cost the mission simply paid. Against all of this sits **Helen Edgar’s Gravity Well**, constellation fourteen of [My Monotropic Galaxy](https://starstuff.earth/monotropic-galaxy-field-guide.html), whose naming and frame are hers and whose violet is this zine’s accent — and **Buckle, Leadbitter, Poliakoff & Gowen (2021)**, 32 Autistic adults, whose finding reframes the whole physics: starting, stopping and switching are one tendency, and what helps is *another person* — *“a stuck buddy that I text”* — where alarms and lists rarely substitute. The paper’s title is a participant’s phrase, *“No Way Out Except From External Intervention,”* which is not a confession but a correct statement about where energy enters a system. Seven refusals, including that the burst is not available on request (participants describe *“a literal paralysis”*), that *you’re not stuck, you’re just orbiting* is not an accommodation, and that gravity is not the villain — the well is also why there is an atmosphere. Desiccation tolerance is ancestral. The vascular plants gave it up to get tall and kept it only in their seeds, and some went back for it. The deficit list was accurate line by line, and measuring the wrong thing.

**Take a tree as the definition of a plant and a moss fails at six points.** No roots — rhizoids anchor and barely absorb. No xylem or phloem. No way to lift water, so no height. No control of its own moisture, because its tissue simply equilibrates with the air. And no photosynthesis at all while dry. Every line is true, and the zine keeps the whole list intact to the last spread. Botany has proper names for the split: a moss is **poikilohydric**, its hydration tracking the surrounding humidity, where a vascular plant is **homoiohydric** and holds an interior against the outside — at the price of roots, xylem, a waxy cuticle and thousands of controllable stomata, with a failure mode that is not a pause but death. *Drying is a state a tree cannot occupy.* **Then the finding that inverts the list.** Proctor, Oliver, Wood, Alpert, Stark, Cleavitt & Mishler, reviewing desiccation tolerance in bryophytes in *The Bryologist* 110(4), 2007, record it as *a primitive character of land plants, lost in the course of evolution of the homoiohydric vascular-plant shoot system, but retained in spores, pollen and seeds, and re-evolved in the vegetative tissues of vascular resurrection plants.* The moss did not fail to acquire the tree’s solution; **the tree discarded the moss’s** — kept it for the one job where nothing else would do, so every seed in a packet is doing what a moss does, and some lineages later evolved their way back to it. **What drying actually is gets stated without comfort.** The cytoplasm enters a glassy state in which molecular mobility is severely reduced; a 2013 *Journal of Experimental Botany* paper on *Syntrichia ruralis* is titled for the result, *“Evidence for the absence of enzymatic reactions in the glassy state.”* It is not idling. It has stopped, and stopping is what conserves it — *survival bought with the whole of the time.* Then water arrives and respiration reactivates almost instantly, photosynthesis within minutes, net rates substantially normal within thirty to sixty. Nothing had to be rebuilt because nothing was dismantled. *Syntrichia* recovers after decades dry; Roads, Longton & Convey (*Current Biology*, 2014) grew new shoots from *Chorisodontium aciphyllum* frozen at least **1,530 years** in Antarctic permafrost — and the zine keeps the two apart on the spread rather than blurring them, because that case is cryptobiosis under freezing, not desiccation. **The best spread is the boundary layer, and it is Robin Wall Kimmerer’s**, read at *Gathering Moss* (Oregon State University Press, 2003, pp. 14–19). Friction stills the air against every surface, and the layer keeps what it holds — heat, water vapour, and over a rotting log up to ten times ambient carbon dioxide. Being small is the entry requirement, not a shortfall. But the layer is not merely found: *friction makes it*, so the long narrow upright leaves, the dense hairs and reflective tips and minuscule spines all deepen it. **The greater the resistance, the deeper the boundary layer — and the larger the boundary layer, the larger the moss can be.** A loop, not a niche: the moss builds the habitat that then permits it to be bigger, and mosses accordingly run from millimetre crusts to ten-centimetre wefts, a range Kimmerer likens to a blueberry bush and a redwood, tracking *the layer* rather than the moss. And layers nest — a rock’s sits under the forest’s umbrella, so the tree that wins every contest for light is also the reason a moss can be large. *That argues against this zine’s own title, which is why it is on the spread and in the closing line.* One more inversion: the green cushion is the **gametophyte**, the generation vascular plants reduced to a few cells in a pollen grain, and the little stalk above it is a periscope whose length correlates with the layer’s depth — the dependent generation is the one built to leave. Closing on *Sphagnum*: peatlands, ~3% of land, holding roughly twice the carbon of all the world’s forest *biomass* — the careful wording, kept because the loose one travels further. Six refusals, including that moss is not secretly tougher, that *small is beautiful* is not on offer, that resilience is never a demand, and that a mechanism recovering in an hour is not a promise made to anyone about burnout. Two people differ functionally at over 30% of their odorant receptor alleles. That is measured, not asserted — and it means “you’re smelling it wrong” is not a sentence that means anything.

Matsutake is among the most expensive foods on earth and **the entire price is for a smell** — principally 1-octen-3-ol and methyl cinnamate, both of which decline as the fruiting body ages, which is why the grading and the airfreight and the button-stage picking all exist. Then the same molecules, elsewhere: deer choose it over other mushrooms, bears dig ditches for it, and Oregon pickers told **Anna Tsing** of *elk with bloody muzzles* from driving their faces into pumice soil to reach it — while in the same ground *“slugs, other fungi, and many kinds of soil bacteria are repulsed by the smell, moving out of its range.”* One set of compounds; an elk digs until it bleeds and a bacterium leaves. **Nothing about the molecules changed between those two sentences.** So the fact this zine follows is ordinary sensory biology: a smell is not a property of an object but a *binding event* between a molecule and a receptor, and if the shape does not fit, nothing happens at all — not a faint smell, nothing. Humans carry about **400 intact odorant receptors**, and somebody counted how much they vary. **Mainland *et al.*** (*Nature Neuroscience*, 2014): *“63% of the odorant receptors we examined had polymorphisms that altered in vitro function… on average, two individuals have functional differences at over 30% of their odorant receptor alleles”* — with OR10G4 genotype explaining over 15% of perceived intensity and over 10% of perceived valence for guaiacol, *and explicitly not explaining it for weaker agonists*, a limit the zine prints rather than rounds off. The worked case runs from a letter of DNA to a word said out loud: **Keller *et al.*** (*Nature*, 2007) found androstenone *“variously perceived by different individuals as offensive (‘sweaty, urinous’), pleasant (‘sweet, floral’) or odourless”* — and traced it to **two amino acid substitutions** in one receptor, OR7D4. Foul, lovely, or absent; three people, one bottle, and nobody misperceiving. Which returns to Tsing’s own account of the autumn aroma: *“It’s disturbing. Many people never learn to love it… Some people liken it to rotting things and some to clear beauty.”* Not a failure of taste — exactly what a complex volatile predicts against arrays differing at a third of their alleles. And the title’s other half sits underneath it: seventy years have not produced a cultivated matsutake either, because it is a fungus *and* a pine root exchanging. **You cannot farm the first and you cannot standardise the second; it is the same refusal, twice.** The turn refuses “everyone has their own truth” hardest — the variation is public, sequenceable and testable, which is the opposite of soft. What it removes is only an excuse: there was no correct experience you were failing to have. *Normal is a statistic about a population, not a fact about a person.* Held honestly on its own face: no study links matsutake aroma to receptor genotype, and joining them is the zine’s move rather than a demonstrated result.

*On the second visual system, the forty minutes it takes to arrive, the one bright light that ends it — and the faint thing that only appears when you *stop looking straight at it*.*

Dark adaptation is a handover, not a dial. The system everyone calls the worse one runs at the floor physics allows — one quantum per rod — and it is only available off-axis, after forty uninterrupted minutes nobody can feel passing.

**Details**

**Your eyes do not gradually get used to the dark. Two systems hand over, and the handover leaves a kink in the curve.** Cone thresholds fall fast and plateau in five to ten minutes; then the trace breaks downward and keeps falling — the *rod–cone break* — reaching a second, far lower plateau at **forty to fifty minutes** and an absolute threshold of order 10^−5^ cd/m². The steep satisfying part is over in ten minutes; the part that delivers the sensitivity takes four times as long and *produces no sensation of progress at all*, so anyone judging by feel concludes they are finished at about the ten-minute mark. **What the second system is for** comes from Hecht, Shlaer & Pirenne, *“Energy, Quanta, and Vision,” Journal of General Physiology* 25, 1942, 819–840 — read at the paper. Thousandth-of-a-second flashes at 510 nm: the minimum visible energy is 2.1–5.7 × 10^−10^ ergs at the cornea, *“between 54 and 148 quanta of blue-green light.”* Subtract the eye — ~4% reflected, *“almost precisely 50 per cent absorbed by the lens and other ocular media,”* *“at least 80 per cent passes through the retina without being absorbed”* — and **5 to 14 quanta** remain, across a field holding *“about 500 rods.”* **And here the zine corrects the most-repeated result in vision science.** It circulates as *the human eye can detect a single photon.* The paper says something narrower and better: *“in order for us to see, it is necessary for only 1 quantum of light to be absorbed by each of 5 to 14 retinal rods.”* One quantum per *rod*; five to fourteen rods for a *person*. The popular version promotes a precise claim about a cell into a boast about an organ. **The costs are stated rather than skipped:** one pigment means colour is not a defined quantity, not that rods are bad at it; heavy pooling buys the sensitivity and is paid for in acuity; and forty minutes is forty minutes. *A tuning is not a ranking.* Then the geometry. The fovea — the patch you point at whatever you attend to — is **rod-free**, and rod density peaks around 20° out, so a faint enough star *goes out* when you look straight at it. Astronomers train **averted vision** deliberately. **And it is not an amateur’s trick: it is how the 1942 number was obtained.** The methods say *“we chose a retinal area situated 20° temporally on the horizontal axis”* — there was no alternative, because there are no rods at the centre to catch the quanta. *The most precise measurement ever made of the limits of human sight was taken by looking away from the thing being measured.* The closing move is the asymmetry: forty minutes to build, an instant to destroy, and the person holding the torch spends nothing while the person who waited pays in full — but rods barely respond to long wavelengths, so red light lets you see and keeps the forty minutes. Observatories, bridges, submarines and darkrooms are lit in red. **Nobody arrived at that by asking observers to adapt faster.** Assemble the description — needs forty uninterrupted minutes, gives no signal while working, resets to zero at no cost to the interrupter, no colour, poor detail, only works off-axis — and it reads exactly like a deficit list, *and nobody has ever treated it as one*, because everybody has it. *On how snow grains bond below the melting point without ever becoming liquid, why the joint grows *because it is the joint* — and why bonding to each other does not fix what you are all standing on.*

Sintering joins separate things into a structure that carries weight, and none of them stops being separate. The reading is Leanne Betasamosake Simpson’s; only the physics and the avalanche are ours.

**Details**

**Walk on hour-old snow and you go through it; walk on the same snow two days later and it carries you.** Nothing was added and nobody packed it. The name for what happened is *sintering*, and the whole zine turns on what it is not: the obvious way to make a heap of separate things into one thing is to melt them, and that is not what occurs. Grains bond **below the melting point**, never liquefy, and stay individual crystals with their own boundaries — you can section a snowpack and count them. **Held honestly on the spread, because it partly undercuts the title:** ice surfaces carry a *quasi-liquid* premelted layer below the bulk melting point which can assist bonding without bulk melting, and its onset, thickness and relation to liquid water have been argued over for a century. Nothing melts in bulk and no crystal loses its identity; the surface where the joining happens is not a simple solid either. **Why the bond forms where it does** is the best fact here. Ice sublimes constantly, and the rate depends on the shape of the surface: a convex grain surface gives up more vapour, a concave hollow gives up less. So vapour leaves the rounded outsides and condenses in the crevice between two grains, simply because that is where the vapour pressure is lowest. *The neck fills in because it is a neck* — and the tighter the curve, the stronger the pull, so the earliest and most awkward stage of a bond is the one the physics favours most. Nothing arrives from outside: the bridge is made of material that left the grains themselves, so **the joint is paid for out of the substance of the things being joined.** It happens *only at contact* — proximity is not contact, and the physics has no mechanism for reaching across a gap — and it is strongly temperature-dependent, fast near zero and nearly stalled in deep cold, which makes the capacity to bond a property of grains-in-conditions rather than of grains. What it buys is not hardness but **load-sharing**: each grain is as fragile as ever, and no grain has to bear the whole thing alone. **Then the cost, which is ours and not our sources’.** Sintering is also how a cohesive slab is made, and a cohesive slab over a weak layer is the slab-avalanche condition — the same connectedness that carries weight is what lets a fracture cross the whole of it at once. And the failure is not in the necks: it is in the weak layer underneath, which the bonding above cannot reach or repair. Bonding to each other does not fix what you are all standing on. **The reading is Leanne Betasamosake Simpson’s**, in *Theory of Water: Nishnaabe Maps to the Times Ahead*, ch. 4, read at the book: *“Sintering is a joining. It is a communal transformation that creates a fabric of former snowflakes bonded to each other”*; *“It weaves itself into its environment, and it does so in a way that doesn’t destroy its neighbours”*; *“sintering is how Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg make worlds.”* She arrived at it grooming a ski trail — *“I wasn’t expecting the snow to teach me how to live in the world”* — and she names the cost more honestly than we did: *“Sintering is slow deformation,”* and *“Sintering in the forest is easy for me; sintering with people I’m currently sharing the planet with, much more difficult.”* **The application to neurodivergent community is Helen Edgar’s.** The order on spread ten — her framework, Helen’s application, our physics — is the order the knowledge actually travelled. *On why stars twinkle and planets do not, on knowing exactly where a problem lives — and on the fact that *correct is not the same as affordable*.*

The flicker belongs to the air, not to the star. Once you know that you cannot honestly blame the star — and you still cannot afford the mirror, which covers a patch, runs on a subscription, and stops when the money does.

**Details**

**A star that appears to be flickering wildly is not flickering.** Its light left years ago, crossed the whole distance without incident, and reached the top of the atmosphere as a flat, orderly wavefront. Everything that happened to it happened in the last few microseconds, crossing air made of shifting cells at slightly different temperatures and densities, each refracting the wavefront a little. What lands is corrugated, and the pattern slides across the ground as the cells drift — so somebody standing a few metres away is receiving your missing photons at that instant. **The control experiment is free every clear night:** through the same air, at the same altitude, **planets barely twinkle**, because a star is effectively a point and a planet presents a resolved disc whose parts sample different cells at once, so the fluctuations cancel. The standard phrasing is exact — their *angular diameters are so large as to quench the scintillations.* **Quench, not resist:** nothing about a planet is tougher, it is simply wide enough that no single cell can speak for the whole of it. If the flicker is caused entirely by the medium, then the flicker is a *measurement* of the medium, and observatories use it as one — *and nobody reads that report as a complaint about the star.* **Then the hinge the zine exists for.** Every remedy is applied to the conditions: wait until the light is higher, spend billions to get above the air, or cancel the distortion with adaptive optics — which needs a natural or laser guide star, is valid over a small patch, and blurs again within milliseconds of the loop opening. *It was never a fix. It is a subscription.* You can correct a patch of sky. You cannot correct the sky. **And somebody already made this argument about people.** The social model of disability performs exactly the relocation on spread two: a person is disabled by a world built to a narrow specification rather than by their body. That move was necessary, and it is also **the free part** — it costs nothing, takes an afternoon, and has never by itself produced a single ramp. Everything after it is the deformable mirror and has the mirror’s properties: expensive, limited in coverage, requiring somebody to keep it running, and failing at once when the funding stops. So the position is uncomfortable in both directions. **The people who locate the problem in the person are wrong, and saying so has never built anything.** What it does settle is *whose* problem it is, which is the argument that has to be won before anyone is asked to pay. Six refusals, including that this is not a complaint about the social model but about treating the relocation as though it were the accommodation — a thing done most often by whoever would have to fund it. *On forty-five bumble bees, nine hundred and ten rolls of a wooden ball, and the definition science had to write down before it could see *doing nothing* at all.*

The sugar water was already within reach and the bees rolled the balls anyway. Play has five formal criteria, and the first one is that it must accomplish nothing — so the useless thing got studied seriously, on a standard that never once asked it to pay.

**Forty-five bumble bees produced 910 ball-rolling actions** in a laboratory where a clear, unobstructed lane led to sucrose they could reach without touching anything. Nothing was hidden under the balls; no bee was ever rewarded for moving one. Galpayage Dona and colleagues tested the behaviour against **Gordon Burghardt’s five criteria** for animal play and it met all five — and foraging, clutter clearing and mating were excluded by the design of the apparatus and by watching what the bees did. **The first criterion is the whole argument:** to count as play, a behaviour must produce no immediate adaptive outcome. Uselessness is not the absence of a category here; it is the entry condition, written down, and checkable. **A second experiment tested whether the activity was rewarding in itself.** Bees learned which of two differently coloured chambers held movable balls; when both chambers were emptied they still chose that colour. They came back for the room, not the toy. **Younger bees rolled most, particularly three to seven days from eclosion** — independent of whether they had met balls before — which is also the window in which bumble bee mushroom bodies are most plastic, though the authors decline to call the overlap causal and this zine prints that hedge. **And the paper’s explanation of its own sex difference is the sentence the zine is built on:** males rolled individual balls longer because they had more “free time” in laboratory conditions, while females had constant access to pollen and a colony objective. Play expanded into the hours function had not claimed — a fact about environments, not about appetites. **Held honestly, at length:** the authors cannot exclude that the rolling followed understimulation in captivity, play-like actions have not been shown in the wild, the motivation is unknown, and their conclusion says *resembling* object play and a *form* of sentience. All of it stays on the page. Six refusals, including that prescribed play stops meeting the first criterion, that this is not stimming reframed, that joy is not the receipt for hardship, and that an insect settles nothing about a human life. *On the root that opens a channel, the lawn that stays compacted, and why we keep asking survivors to do *systems change*.*

A dandelion in soil packed to 1.8 grams per cubic centimetre loosened the ground for seventy micrometres, halved that by a hundred and forty, and changed nothing at the scale of the pot. It is a triumph. It is not a repair, and the difference is the whole argument.

**Burr-Hersey, Ritz, Bengough and Mooney built the hostile condition on purpose** — sandy loam compacted to 1.8 g cm⁻³ with a penetration resistance of 1.55 MPa, roughly fifteen atmospheres — then grew three wild dicots in it for 28 days and imaged the soil by X-ray computed tomography, so the pore structure could be measured without taking it apart. All three species are plants a lawn is designed to exclude; the experiment is a study of weeds without calling itself one. **For the dandelion the porosity was 6.9 per cent in the mantle 0–70 µm from the root surface and 3.9 per cent at 70–140 µm**, and the paper states plainly that changes were not observed at the whole-column scale. Seventy micrometres is about the width of a human hair. **Which makes the sentence everyone repeats — that dandelions break up compacted soil — the smoothed retelling of a result whose conditions were the finding.** Not a lie; a claim that kept the verb and dropped every limit attached to it. **Then a second complication the metaphor does not survive intact:** most dandelions are clones. The genus reproduces largely by apomixis, setting viable seed without fertilisation, and apomicts are triploid or tetraploid while the sexual minority are diploid. Majeský, Vašut, Kitner and Trávníček found apomictic accessions genetically highly homogeneous, with the genus’s real variety most likely of sexual origin — inherited from its lineage’s past rather than being made now. So the tidy reading, grass monoculture against dandelion biodiversity, has a clone-field on both sides. **Nick Covington’s line survives all of it and is sharpened by it:** in an environment of total control, every dandelion is a triumph. Triumph is the right word. Solution is not — and if even the weed is not the answer to the lawn, the answer was never among the things growing in it. It has to be the ground. **The turn is ours:** the Autistic kid who found one corridor, the Disabled worker who found the one manager who said yes. A channel opened by force, the width of one person, in ground that stayed exactly as hard — and then read back by the institution as evidence that the column was fine. **The closing spread turns on a second dandelion.** In Boyce and Ellis’s 2005 borrowing from Swedish the dandelion child is the *low*-sensitivity one who does tolerably anywhere, and the orchid is exquisitely sensitive to context; Lionetti, Aron, Aron and colleagues added the tulip in the middle across 906 adults — 29 per cent, 40 per cent, 31 per cent. And the orchid half is not fragility: in good conditions orchids do *better* than dandelions, so every orchid failing in a compacted room is also a result nobody got to see. Set the two dandelions side by side and both say the same thing about the ground — hard ground does not produce variety, it selects for whoever needed least from it, and the survivors get counted as the normal range. Behaviourism is the machinery that presses down, and its offer is that the ground can stay exactly as hard if the child is trained to tolerate it. Unmaking is mostly subtraction; remaking is **Cavendish Space**, built for caves, campfires and watering holes alike. Six refusals, including resilience as a substitute for accommodation, and the flat statement that surviving is not nothing. Thirteen spreads, two figures. **A rhyme, not a proof.**

*On the right angles in a pigeon’s forebrain, three papers that disagree about where they came from, and what belonging looks like under *either* answer.*

A bird’s forebrain has no layers, and it has the wiring motif layers exist to produce. Whether birds inherited that circuit or built it separately is an open argument between three papers — and the ranking has nothing to stand on either way.

**Stacho and colleagues read fibre orientation directly**, by three-dimensional polarised light imaging, through the forebrain of a pigeon and a barn owl — and found radially and tangentially organised fibres crossing at right angles along the entire extent of the Wulst and the sensory dorsal ventricular ridge. Lamina-like and column-like, in a brain that builds neither layers nor columns. The motif was *iterative*: it recurred across somatosensory, visual and auditory zones, across two regions, and across two species that last shared an ancestor very deep in the Palaeozoic — which is what makes it a finding rather than a slice. **The paper also prints its own boundary**, and the boundary is the part a summary drops: the *non*-sensory parts of the dorsal ventricular ridge showed a mosaic-like arrangement instead, patches of fibres running in different directions. **Then the obvious explanation fails on its own numbers.** A kea carries about 1.28 billion pallial neurons and a raven about 1.2 billion, against a chimpanzee’s 7.4 billion, and all three perform comparably across a wide range of tasks; Güntürkün, Pusch and Rose say so in the paper the figures come from. What makes the arithmetic survivable is not size but provisioning — about 19 per cent of a primate’s neurons sit in the pallium against 62 per cent in parrots and 78 in songbirds — and cost, since avian neurons run on roughly a third of the glucose mammalian neurons use. The bird got a cheaper brain and spent the saving on density. **The zine’s centre is a disagreement, and it is a real one.** Stacho and colleagues close by suggesting an ancient microcircuit already present in the last common stem amniote, conserved and partly modified — inheritance. Güntürkün, Pusch and Rose argue the four features required for complex cognition *convergently evolved*, independently, and are therefore hard to replace — invention, twice. Zaremba and colleagues, sequencing the chicken pallium cell by cell across eight stages in the egg, report conserved inhibitory types alongside transcriptomic convergence — partly each, with the boundary in an unexpected place. **“Convergent evolution” is the version that travels**, because two independent inventions of a mind is a headline and an unsettled question is a research programme. This piece declines to print one of three as the answer, and shows instead why the belonging claim survives whichever way it lands: if built twice, the layered cortex is one implementation and not the entry fee; if inherited, the kit is older than either lineage and neither of us designed it. **A shared inheritance cannot be a hierarchy.** Fifteen spreads, two figures, six refusals. *On the point past which more light does nothing, one species that answered the same shade in two different ways, and what it takes to stop calling one of them a failure.*

Two varieties of a single pepper species, under the same solar array, through the same season. One tripled its fruit. The other broke even on two-thirds less water. Deciding which of them fell short means deciding first what you are short of.

**Details**

**Photosynthesis stops rewarding light long before the sky stops delivering it.** The rate climbs with intensity, then flattens at a *light saturation point* that is specific to the species — past which the light-harvesting reactions are simply full, and further photons change nothing. Stallknecht and colleagues put a number on the gap: basil yield rose between roughly 6 and 12 mol m⁻² d⁻¹ and then stopped improving, while their unshaded control sat near 20. Something like two fifths of the light landing on a basil plant arrives at a machine already running flat out. That surplus is what a photovoltaic panel can take without taking anything from the plant. **Then the field data refuses to be a single story.** Barron-Gafford and colleagues grew three nightshades under an array outside Tucson. Chiltepin pepper — the wild variety of *Capsicum annuum* — took up 33 per cent more carbon and produced three times the fruit. Jalapeño, the domesticated variety of the *same species*, took up 11 per cent *less* carbon and produced roughly the same fruit anyway, with water-use efficiency 157 per cent greater and 65 per cent less water lost to transpiration. Cherry tomato doubled. One organism, two strategies, no ordering that does not start with an arbitrary choice about which resource counts. **And the tomato contradicts itself across two papers.** It doubled under Arizona panels; in a Michigan greenhouse its yield ran linear in daily light with no upper asymptote at all, so every photon removed cost fruit — 25 and 37 per cent down on yield under the best coverings, and 52 and 74 per cent down on *ripe* fruit. Neither measurement is wrong. What differed is which resource the surroundings had already made scarce: heat and water in the desert, light under glass. **Shade tolerance turns out not to live in the plant.** It lives in the relationship between the plant and the place, which is why the Fraunhofer group can write that with shading rates adjusted accordingly it is theoretically possible to grow all crops in such a system. There is no unsuitable crop; there is a ratio nobody adjusted. **The exchange runs both ways** — the panels themselves ran about 8.9 °C cooler over transpiring crops than over bare ground, which is the thing a zero-sum framing has no axis for. The piece prints what the field says about itself too: practicability “hardly investigated”, wind standards at odds with wind-tunnel results, and twelve papers on policy out of 308 screened. *On a course held to better than a degree that nobody can explain, the ocean’s largest cargo carried by an animal that is not eating, and what it means that the missing account is ours.*

Sixteen humpbacks, twenty-eight straight lines, and no mechanism that accounts for them. On the same fasting crossing those whales move more nitrogen into the tropics than the ocean brings up by itself. The whale is not trying to do either one.

**Details**

**Horton and colleagues tracked sixteen humpback whales by satellite between 2003 and 2010 and measured how straight they swam.** Twenty-eight constant-course segments, every one held to better than five degrees at the ninety-five per cent confidence level and fifteen of them to better than one, across 240 to 2,230 kilometres and two to twenty-eight days. Sea-surface currents deflected the whales’ *headings* by up to twenty-five degrees and did not move their *tracks* — meaning the animals correct continuously for a drift they must first be able to detect. One segment crossed a tropical storm. Three whales tracked all the way south finished within about a hundred kilometres of the same point, in different months of different years by distinctly different routes. **And neither obvious answer closes.** Whales under near-identical magnetic declination left on opposite headings; whales under different Sun positions held the same one. Fourteen years later Chatterjee and Ghosh brought circular statistics to it and found the strongest correlate is the *interaction* of solar position and geomagnetic change — then wrote in their own discussion that the contribution is limited and part of a broader system nobody has mapped. Describing how a humpback changes direction took twenty-nine distributions; there is no average heading to be noise around. **Then turn the line over.** Roman and colleagues weighed what rides on it: 3,784 tons of nitrogen and 46,512 tons of biomass a year, moved by fasting animals from rich high-latitude water to nutrient-poor tropical calving grounds — the great whale conveyor belt, to the authors’ knowledge the largest long-distance nutrient subsidy on the planet, and roughly three times larger before commercial whaling. A gray whale gathers across an area up to forty-six times bigger than the one it unloads into, and concentration is the whole mechanism. In the Hawaiian sanctuary the whales deliver 125 to 175 per cent of the nitrogen that upwelling brings up. Most of it arrives as carcasses and placentas. **Six refusals, and the first one is the load-bearing one:** the usefulness is a fact here and never a reason, because a case for a life built on what it delivers has already conceded the terms on which it can be taken away.

*On thirty frogs in a stock tank that perch on absolutely everything, a leaf that is quietly moving several litres of air a day into airless mud, and the pairing we invented between them.*

The frog really does sit on the lily pad. It also sits on the pennywort, the elephant ear, the rocks and the rim. What it needs is a surface at a height — and the leaf under it is running a circuit the frog will never know about.

**Details**

**A frog on a lily pad is the most reproduced pairing in pond imagery, and it is not a pairing.** In a galvanised stock tank about ten feet across in Dripping Springs, Texas, more than thirty full-grown southern leopard frogs have been counted at once — perched on the water lily, yes, fully up on a mature leaf, but equally on the pennywort, the elephant ear, the rocks and the steel rim. What an adult frog wants is geometric rather than botanical: a flat surface, at a height, in the sun, above the strike zone, one jump from the water. Take the lilies out and the frogs would sit on whatever was left. **Meanwhile the leaf is doing something the frog has no part in.** Dacey measured “a pressurized flow-through system” in a water lily: several litres of air a day entering the *young, newly emerged* leaves by thermal transpiration and hygrometric pressure, travelling down the petioles at up to 50 centimetres per minute to a rhizome buried in anaerobic sediment, and forcing a simultaneous return flow of carbon-dioxide-rich gas up the petioles of the *older* leaves. New growth is the intake; old growth is the exhaust; neither half works alone. Richards, Kuhn and Bishop found the same architecture in *Nymphaea odorata* — the genus actually in the tank, checked rather than assumed — where air canals form 24 per cent of the petiole's cross-section, the first three pairs account for 96 per cent of that, and modelled flow depends on the balance of influx to efflux leaves. **And a 2021 photograph from the same pond puts a frog egg mass glued to a water lily stem**: eggs attached to a tube that is a quarter air, with a current running past them. The zine refuses to say the frog chose the stem *because* it is a pipe. **Two systems, one object, no relationship — and the error is the subject.** Reading partnership out of proximity is the same move that turned mycorrhizal symbiosis into elder trees feeding their young. Five refusals, including that thirty frogs is an observation and not data, and that the picture was never the thing that was wrong. A rhyme, not a proof.

*On four dogs, thirty-six strangers, 675 correct trials out of 720, and why the quiet room with the dogs is restful for a reason nobody flatters anybody by naming.*

Many of us leave the gathering and go sit with the dogs. The usual explanation is that dogs are more empathetic than people. The evidence will not carry that — and what it will carry is better.

**Details**

**Stress has an outgassing, and a nose can find it through a sample jar.** Wilson, Campbell, Petzel and Reeve ran a double-blind, two-phase, three-alternative forced-choice trial: four dogs — Treo, Winnie, Fingal and Soot — presented with combined breath and sweat taken from thirty-six people before and after three minutes of counting backwards aloud from 9000 in seventeens. Stress was confirmed independently, and eleven of the fifty-three people recruited were *excluded for not having a sufficient stress response at all*. The dogs picked the stress sample in **675 of 720 trials**, and in **34 of 36** on first exposure to a stranger they had no history with. The authors’ own conclusion is about chemistry, not sympathy: an acute stress response changes the volatile organic compounds coming off breath and sweat. A volatile organic compound is metabolic exhaust, not a performance — you do not rehearse it, time it, or get better at it. **Which places the dog on the other channel.** A room grades a narrow authored band: face, gaze, prosody, turn-taking latency. That band is what masking works on, at enormous cost, and it is the band the dogs never had. So the quiet room is not restful because the dog understands us better; it is restful because *the dog is reading the one channel we are not required to manage* — and the signal everybody agreed was missing turns out to be present, legible and reliable at 93.75 per cent as soon as somebody stops looking in the band we spend our lives performing. **The honesty is printed rather than kept back.** The sample is four dogs and the authors call it proof of principle in their own words; the dogs were *trained to alert* and rewarded for it; and discrimination is not interpretation, which is not care. Nagasawa’s famous oxytocin gaze loop is on no spread here, because published commentaries flag confounds in it and a contested result is not a floor. Worse for the warm reading: Parr-Cortes and colleagues found eighteen dogs exposed to an unfamiliar person’s stress odour became significantly *less* likely to approach an ambiguous food location — possible risk-reduction rather than comfort. The dog beside us may be being careful, not soothing. It closes on **Carol Millman**, an Autistic professional dog trainer, who answered “is ABA dog training for children?” by pointing out that the comparison is unfair to the trainers: meet every fundamental need before any conditioning, relieve the fear rather than train away its display, and know that a dog taught not to growl is a *time bomb dog*, because you removed the warning and not the fear. That professional standard is higher than the one applied behaviour analysis has held for us. Thirteen spreads, two figures, five refusals. A rhyme, not a proof.

*A byline has one field and contribution does not — what happened when the format was pushed to 5,154 names, what got built instead, and the practice that follows at any scale.*

Twenty-four of the paper’s thirty-three pages were the list of names, and not one of them said what anybody did. The fix was never a better kind of contributor. It was another field.

**Details**

**Take the byline seriously as engineering and it is a data structure with exactly one shape:** an ordered list of names, with no field for what anybody did. In May 2015 that structure was pushed to its limit — the ATLAS and CMS collaborations published a combined Higgs mass measurement with **5,154 authors**, and of its 33 pages only the first nine carried the research and the references. The other 24 were names and institutions. The zine refuses the easy reading: the absurdity is not how many people it took, because five thousand people really did make that measurement. It is the *format*, which could record that honesty only by printing 24 pages of names and still saying nothing about any of them.

**What got built instead is CRediT — fourteen roles, ANSI/NISO Z39.104-2022 — and the interesting half is reading the list rather than citing it.** Data curation. Software. Validation. Visualization. Resources. Somebody cleaned the data, wrote the code, checked whether it was true, made it legible, kept the instrument running. All of it is work and none of it has ever had anywhere to go. *A recognition system with one field reliably recognises the people whose contribution fits that field and reliably misses everyone else* — without anyone intending it. **And the zine will not end there:** once contributions became recordable they became countable, and Larivière, Pontille and Sugimoto found the division of labour running along familiar lines. A vocabulary makes work visible; it does not make it valued. Then five moves that need no standard at all, what this site actually does, the failure it has not fixed — credit here is well kept for sources and poorly kept for labour — and the limit: **a named contributor who has not been paid is a contributor who has not been paid.**

*On a beginning with no location, an observable universe that *does* have a centre, and the difference between no preferred place and no preferred frame.*

The hot dense phase was a condition of all of space, not an event at a place. So it happened in the volume your body occupies now — and a geometry with no origin has no far end.

**Details**

**Almost everyone carries the same wrong picture, and almost nobody was told it was an approximation:** a point, empty blackness around it, a flash, debris flying outward. Three assumptions ride in with it — that space was already there, that there was a *place* it happened, and therefore that there is a centre. The zine takes the third one apart, because a centre is never only a fact about geometry. A centre is a licence to sort things by how far they are from it. Hubble’s 1929 measurement looks like evidence that everything is fleeing us specifically; read through the geometry it is the signature of there being no centre at all, since every vantage point sees the same thing. The bread-and-raisins analogy is used and then its flaw is named rather than glossed: **a loaf has a crust**, and the container is precisely what is in dispute.

**Then the claim the title carries.** The hot dense phase was a condition of all of space at once, so every region that exists now existed then — not descended from it, not made of material that travelled from it, but *was* it, hotter. Including the region you are in. And the honest exception is printed rather than skipped: your *observable* universe does have a centre, exactly, and it is you — a sphere of 13.797 ± 0.023 billion years of light-travel, per Planck 2018. So does everyone else’s. **Every observer is at the centre of their own observable universe, and every one of them is right**, which is a flatter and harder sentence than the flattering one it resembles. A refusal is placed early rather than held to the end, because the rest leans on its absence: *no preferred place is not no preferred frame*. The microwave background defines one, and the Sun’s speed against it is **369.82 ± 0.11 kilometres per second**. No centre does not mean no ground.

**The qualifier that fell off the popular account gets a spread of its own.** *The universe is flat, therefore infinite* is a combined-dataset result: flat means Euclid holding over cosmological distances rather than anything about thinness, and the answer arrives one dataset at a time — Planck’s spectra alone give −0.044 and put only about one sample in ten thousand at flat or beyond, the lensing map moves it to −0.0106 ± 0.0065, and the oscillation data lands it on 0.0007 ± 0.0019. The sign convention runs opposite to the curvature, so negative is closed and finite. And Di Valentino, Melchiorri and Silk argued in *Nature Astronomy* that assuming flatness “could therefore mask a cosmological crisis,” while Planck’s own team disagrees. Both sides are given, because **the no-centre claim survives every branch of the disagreement and the infinity claim does not**: a finite closed space has no middle either. Then the method is turned on the zine itself — *space itself expands* is how the field teaches it and not a finding, and Bunn and Hogg’s kinematic reading is named, because using a field’s standard picture without saying it is a picture is exactly how the wrong picture on spread two got made. The turn: high-functioning, mild, severe, far end of the spectrum are all distance-from-a-centre measurements, and the centre was a position somebody occupied and then promoted to an origin. Cosmology had a centre available and declined to promote it, because *a centre every observer has is not a centre anybody can be sorted by*. Six refusals, led by the naturalistic fallacy: the geometry grants no permissions and issues no reassurances. Multiverses and fine-tuning are absent on purpose — the source marks them speculative, and this register does not build arguments about people on contested cosmology. A rhyme, not a proof.

How this collection works

## What holds these together

Every piece here works the same way. Take one fact that is settled and checkable, follow it honestly, and find that the fact *itself* already contains the claim about belonging. The calcium in your bones really was forged in stars. Mitochondria really were free-living bacteria that never left. The early universe really did need tiny unevennesses to make anything at all — a perfectly uniform cosmos would have stayed a dead fog forever.

That is the difference between physics as argument and physics as decoration. In this collection **the fact is the argument**, not an illustration of a point already decided somewhere else. If the science turned out otherwise, the piece would have to change. That is the test, and it is the reason this register earns the trust it asks for.

## Sorted by register, not by date

The first ten zines founded this method, and seven of them are here. But **thirty-six of these pieces were made much later** — *The Nearest Body*, *No Universal Now*, *The Same Water* and *Not a Line* among them — and still belong here, because they do exactly the same thing. Tidal force really does fall off with the cube of distance, which is why the Moon runs the tide even though the Sun out-masses it some 27 million times. Clocks really do run at different rates by speed and gravity, which is why your phone's GPS has to correct for it. Water really does hold and then flip at a threshold rather than stiffening by degrees.

Membership here is decided by **mechanism, not chronology**. A piece is in this collection if the fact is doing the work. The numbers still say when each one was made — see [Cosmic Connections](https://starstuff.earth/cosmic-connections.html) on why we kept them that way.

Not

**Not the naturalistic fallacy.** The atoms do not owe us this conclusion. We are noticing a rhyme, not collecting a proof, and *The Lines We Drew* is in this collection precisely to name the trap: the bell curve was recruited to make “normal” look like physics, and eugenics followed. Dressing a human value as a law of nature is the exact move we refuse.

**Not interdisciplinary as tourism** — borrowing a physics word for its glamour and leaving the physics behind.
