# Stimming and Belonging with AURORA

Twenty-eight performances, weighted toward live — because the argument is the body — and the physics of the light she shares a name with. The companion rack to [Warriors and Weirdos](https://starstuff.earth/aurora-zine.html), Zine No. 13.

Playlist & essay · Sound

One

## She watched herself back, and did not change a thing

Asked about the way she moves on stage, AURORA gave one of the more useful answers anybody has given about a body in public.

The first time I saw myself playing live… on a video was kind of a terrifying. I didn't know that I looked like I was doing an exorcism or having a heart attack while performing live… but I can't really do anything about it. I'm a very emotional person, and I guess when you have songs with lots of emotions… I have to use everything I got to sing those songs, and I have lots of things to work with.

AURORA, in the [Red Bull session](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDVwakM7MxQ) for “Conqueror.” Lightly condensed from her spoken answer; ellipses mark cuts.

Read that again for the order of events. **She saw it. She was shocked by it. She kept it.** Not because she reframed it into something admirable, and not because someone reassured her — she says plainly that she can't do anything about it, and then, in the same breath, that she needs it. The movement is not decoration laid over the singing. It is part of how the singing happens. *I have to use everything I got.*

Anyone who has been told to keep their hands still knows how rare that sentence is. The usual sequence runs the other way: you catch sight of yourself, you feel the shock, and you spend the next twenty years editing.

Whose word is which

**She calls it emotion. We are the ones calling it stimming, and that distinction belongs on the page rather than buried in it.** AURORA has spoken publicly about being neurodivergent, using that word; she has not, as far as we can find, described her stage movement as stimming, and we are not going to put the term in her mouth.

What we are saying is narrower and, we think, still worth saying: **a great many of us watch her move and recognise something** — the whole body recruited, the motion arriving with the feeling rather than after it, the flat refusal to hold still for the comfort of onlookers. The recognition is ours. The title of this page describes what her work does for us, not a claim about what is happening inside her.

Two

## What the light she is named after is actually doing

The aurora takes its name from the Roman goddess of the dawn. So does she. That is a coincidence and we are going to make nothing of it — but the coincidence points at a piece of physics that turns out to be about exactly this.

Here is the part everyone knows: charged particles from the Sun spiral down the magnetic field into the upper atmosphere and the sky lights up. Here is the part that matters. **The colour is not the Sun's.** The solar wind delivers energy and nothing else; what you actually see is an oxygen atom, having been knocked into an excited state, dropping back down and releasing a photon at the one wavelength its own structure permits. The famous green is **557.7 nm**, and that number is not a property of the Sun or of the wind or of the weather. It is atomic oxygen's own line. **Energy came from outside. The colour is the atom's.**

Now the part that stopped us. That green line is a **forbidden transition**.

*“Forbidden” is a term of art. It does not mean impossible — it means the transition breaks the electric-dipole selection rules, so it happens *slowly*. An allowed transition is over in nanoseconds. The oxygen ¹S state sits for about **0.7 seconds** before it releases the green photon, and the ¹D state waits about **110 seconds** for the red.*

And that waiting is why altitude decides the colour. Low down, the air is crowded: long before the atom can complete its slow release, something collides with it and takes the energy away instead. Physicists call it **collisional quenching**, which is as bleak a phrase as it sounds. The green shows between roughly 100 and 150 km. The red needs to be higher still, because *110 seconds* of undisturbed waiting is not available anywhere denser.

The most famous light in the sky is a slow release that the rules call forbidden, and it only completes where nothing crowds it.

Both halves matter. The label was never a verdict on whether it could happen. And the room is what decides whether it does.

We are not going to spell out the analogy. You can see it. What we will say is what the physics licenses and what it doesn't: **“forbidden” is a description of a ruleset, not of a possibility** — the sky does it constantly — and **whether a slow thing gets to finish depends on the density of what surrounds it**, which is an argument about rooms rather than about atoms.

A rhyme, not a proof

Oxygen has no stake in any of this. Selection rules are not social rules, and quenching is not a metaphor for a classroom — the word is doing a specific job about collision cross-sections and it does not transfer. Nothing about the 557.7 nm line obliges anyone to make room for anyone. **We are noticing that the sky's best-known trick has the same shape as the thing we keep asking for, and noticing is the whole of the claim.**

Three

## The same song, again, and again

There is a word for the other half of this, and it is ours rather than the industry's. **Stim listening** — listening repetitively to a single song, album or playlist — was coined by **Jim Irion**, who describes using it to start work and to hold focus.

It is the listening practice almost nobody designs for. Streaming services are built to move you along: the next track, the fresh recommendation, the endless lateral drift. Plenty of us want the opposite, and want it for good reasons — the same song forty times because the fortieth is doing something the first could not, because repetition is regulation, because you have found an **auditory samefood** and samefoods are not a phase.

AURORA's catalogue takes this unusually well, and the rack below is arranged for it rather than against it: the same song appears more than once in different rooms, because *Conqueror* at a Red Bull session and *Conqueror* on late-night American television are not the same event, and running them back to back is a legitimate way to listen.

Ryan keeps a YouTube playlist called [*Stimming with Aurora*](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4vHAg2MP4X982EMeNJdxjnNNKGcw4tAw), and it is worth noticing what is in it: **almost nothing but live performances.** Not the studio versions, not the official videos — the sessions, the radio spots, the concerts. That is not an accident of collecting. When the body is the argument, you need the footage where the body is.

Four

## Queendom, and a people that names itself

The belonging half of this page is argued at length in [Warriors and Weirdos](https://starstuff.earth/aurora-zine.html), so we will not repeat it here. One thing is worth restating, because it is the mechanism.

*Queendom* (2018) does not describe a place that exists. It describes one being declared — a country announced for everybody the existing countries had no room for, which is a different act from asking to be let into somewhere already standing. And her audience did the corresponding thing from the other direction: they took a name. **Weird stops working as an insult at the exact moment a people picks it up and uses it as an address.**

That is the same move the word *stimpunk* makes, and *crip*, and *mad*, and *neuroqueer*. It is also why the reclamation is never available to bystanders: the word only turns when the people it was used against are the ones turning it.

Five

## No cure, and the wounds nobody can see

Two of her songs do work this collection keeps needing, and they do it from opposite ends.

*Cure for Me* (2021) takes the brightest, most danceable arrangement on the record and puts it underneath a refusal — which is the correct setting for that refusal, because the demand for a cure is usually delivered warmly, by people who are sure they are helping. *Invisible Wounds* (2024) goes the other way and stays with the part that does not photograph: the injury nobody can see is still an injury, and the absence of a visible mark has never been evidence of anything except the limits of looking.

Between them sits the practical fact that every access conversation eventually runs into. **What can't be seen still has to be believed.**

Six

## What this page refuses

A page about a beloved performer's body carries specific risks, and it is better to name them than to hope nobody notices.

- **Not a diagnosis.** AURORA has said she is neurodivergent and we use her word, exactly as [Zine No. 13](https://starstuff.earth/aurora-zine.html) does. Aggregator and SEO pages have begun attaching specific conditions to her name; we are not repeating them, and neither should anyone citing this page.
- **Not her art explained by her brain.** “She makes music like that *because* she is neurodivergent” sounds like appreciation and works like a reduction — it turns a body of deliberate craft into a symptom with a soundtrack.
- **Not stimming attributed to her.** She describes emotion. We describe recognition. Those are different sentences and this page keeps them apart.
- **Not inspiration.** She is not evidence that being different works out fine if you have enough talent. Most of us are not going to be given a stage, and the argument for making room cannot depend on the person in the room turning out to be extraordinary.
- **Not stimming as acceptable only when it is beautiful.** This is the one that matters most here. Her movement is celebrated because it is on a stage, set to music, and lovely to watch. **The same body doing the same thing in a classroom gets a behaviour plan, and a child who flaps in a supermarket gets stared at by people who would applaud this.** If the movement is only permitted once it has been made into art, nothing has actually been conceded.
- **Not physics as permission.** The aurora does not authorise anything. It is a rhyme, and it is fenced as one above.

## One — Watch the body

Live, because that is where the argument is. Most of these come straight from Ryan's own *Stimming with Aurora* playlist.

The one with the quote

Conqueror

Red Bull session · song 2016

The session this page's opening quotation comes from — she describes seeing herself on video for the first time, being shocked, and carrying on regardless. Watch it knowing that, and the performance changes.

[▶ AURORA — Conqueror, Red Bull session](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/fDVwakM7MxQ)

Same song, other room

Conqueror — The Tonight Show

Live with Jimmy Fallon · song 2016

The same song on American network television, with the cameras and the band and the studio audience. Run it straight after the Red Bull session; nothing has been sanded down.

[▶ AURORA — Conqueror, live on The Tonight Show](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/IwNoXFgg8lo)

Off the leash

Running With The Wolves

Pandora Sessions · song 2015

The song Zine No. 13 uses for the wild, instinctive self, performed in a small room where you can see her feet. Stamping, not choreography.

[▶ AURORA — Running With The Wolves, Pandora Sessions](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/5skBr_96dPc)

Radio session

Warrior — Like A Version

triple j · song 2016

Australian radio, live to air, no place to hide. *Warrior* is the courage-to-stay-yourself song, and this is it delivered in a room designed for scrutiny.

[▶ AURORA — Warrior, live for Like A Version](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/lAUu5EGivfA)

Full set

Full Performance (Live on KEXP)

KEXP

A whole session rather than a single. The long form is the point — you can watch the movement build across songs instead of catching it in a three-minute clip.

[▶ AURORA — full performance, live on KEXP](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/P_XguuxLo10)

Small and close

Tiny Desk Concert

NPR Music

The format that strips everything: an office, no lights, an audience of colleagues at arm's length. Nothing about how she moves depends on the stage being large.

[▶ AURORA — NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/evBgLWQwAFA)

## Two — Excited from outside, the colour is yours

The wild, animal, earthbound songs — where the energy arrives from somewhere else and what comes out is characteristic of the material.

The animal self

Animal

AURORA · 2019

From *A Different Kind of Human – Step 2*. The instinctive body claimed rather than apologised for, at a volume the earlier records didn't reach for.

[▶ AURORA — Animal](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/3DIT8Y3LC6M)

Too far, allegedly

I Went Too Far

Live on the Honda Stage · song 2016

A title that is an accusation, sung by someone declining it. Live, so you can watch her go exactly as far as the song requires.

[▶ AURORA — I Went Too Far, live on the Honda Stage](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/Y2AqeH1GPs4)

Earth, addressed

The Seed

AURORA · 2019

Her most direct environmental song, and one of the few that refuses the comfortable ending. You cannot eat money; the arithmetic is not complicated.

[▶ AURORA — The Seed](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/_Mc_OM5oNA8)

Small tremors

Gentle Earthquakes

AURORA · 2018

From *Infections of a Different Kind – Step 1*. A title that holds the whole idea of an upheaval that arrives quietly and moves everything anyway.

[▶ AURORA — Gentle Earthquakes](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/7B19B0PUE4Y)

## Three — Stim-listening

The ones that reward the fortieth play. Put one on repeat; that is a use, not a malfunction.

Where it starts

Runaway

AURORA · 2015

The song that opens her whole story — written young, about leaving, and then about wanting to get home. It has not worn out in a decade of being played on repeat, which is the actual test.

[▶ AURORA — Runaway](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/d_HlPboLRL8)

Carried elsewhere

Through The Eyes Of A Child

AURORA · 2016

A quiet song from the debut that found an enormous second audience through television. Built for repetition — almost nothing happens in it, deliberately.

[▶ AURORA — Through The Eyes Of A Child](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/sK6jRNl83tY)

Quiet as an event

It Happened Quiet

AURORA · 2018

The loudest thing on the record is how little noise it makes. A samefood in the exact sense — you can put it on for a month and keep finding the room bigger than you left it.

[▶ AURORA — It Happened Quiet](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/0b1BkqJFJeg)

Love, without the ache

Exist For Love

AURORA · 2020

Released into the first pandemic summer, and unusual in her catalogue for being uncomplicatedly tender. Kept here because regulation is not always achieved by intensity.

[▶ AURORA — Exist For Love](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/7YDkrJaiCrw)

Live, unannounced

Forgotten Love

Live in Brazil · song 2018

Filmed by a newspaper rather than a label, which is why it looks like this. The gap between an official video and someone simply pointing a camera is itself informative.

[▶ AURORA — Forgotten Love, live in Brazil](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/OLJQrXitrro)

## Four — A people that names itself

Declaring a country rather than applying for a visa to somebody else's.

The declaration

Queendom

AURORA · 2018

Not a request to be admitted somewhere existing — the announcement of a place with different membership rules, made for the people the existing places had no room for.

[▶ AURORA — Queendom, official video](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/wULeXeQkqd0)

Stripped back

Queendom — Loustic Sessions

Loustic Sessions · song 2018

The same declaration with the production removed. It survives the reduction, which is a decent test of whether a song meant it.

[▶ AURORA — Queendom, Loustic Sessions](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/uM8Wqfv5Jw8)

They came for the ones who don't fit

A Different Kind Of Human

AURORA · 2019

Alien-ness taken literally and then turned kindly: not a defect to correct, but evidence you belong somewhere real. The spine of Zine No. 13.

[▶ AURORA — A Different Kind Of Human](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/i5fn2akuRCQ)

Come with us

Mothership

AURORA · 2019

In her telling the aliens don't conquer — they collect the people this planet was never built for. A free space with the difference set as the default rather than the exception.

[▶ AURORA — Mothership](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/gGj4VsgrHxA)

Letting it in

Giving In To The Love

AURORA · 2021

From *The Gods We Can Touch*. Belonging framed as something you have to stop resisting, which is closer to most people's experience of it than the welcome-mat version.

[▶ AURORA — Giving In To The Love](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/QrC8yyp32wY)

## Five — No cure, and the wounds nobody can see

The refusal, and the part that doesn't photograph.

Nothing to fix

Cure For Me

AURORA · 2021

Written against the idea that people need fixing to be acceptable, with conversion “therapy” in view — and set to the brightest arrangement on the record, because the demand for a cure is usually delivered warmly.

[▶ AURORA — Cure For Me](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/K17df81RL9Y)

Believed without proof

Invisible Wounds

AURORA · 2024

The injury nobody can see is still an injury. Every access conversation eventually arrives here, usually at the point where someone asks for documentation.

[▶ AURORA — Invisible Wounds](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/Ty-mxGDbDAQ)

Head against heart

The Conflict Of The Mind

AURORA · 2024

From *What Happened to the Heart?* — the argument a mind conducts with itself, which is a different thing from being conflicted about a decision.

[▶ AURORA — The Conflict Of The Mind](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/7TF91Zk8L5w)

The border of the body

Some Type Of Skin

AURORA · 2024

What you grow to survive contact, and what it costs to grow it. Masking has a physical vocabulary and this song uses it.

[▶ AURORA — Some Type Of Skin](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/iMfQoZUrn4M)

No king required

A Soul With No King

Live on KEXP · song 2024

Ungoverned rather than lost — a distinction the people doing the governing rarely accept. Live, so the body is in it.

[▶ AURORA — A Soul With No King, live on KEXP](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/BgZsRaqDzKs)

## Six — Back to Earth

The mothership was never the destination. Each other was.

It will be

To Be Alright

AURORA · 2024

Reassurance that does not pretend the difficulty was imaginary, which is the only kind worth having. Notice how much of the record had to happen first.

[▶ AURORA — To Be Alright](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/xr2m9z0qnqk)

The way home

Runaway — Honda Stage

Live · song 2015

The first song again, live, years later. She has said the fans and the concerts pulled her back to Earth — this is roughly what that looks like from the outside.

[▶ AURORA — Runaway, live on the Honda Stage](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/DB5USH8Vr1w)

One more room

Live at Paste Studio, NYC

Paste Magazine

A last session for the road. If you have got this far, you already know what to watch for, and it is not the singing.

[▶ AURORA at Paste Studio NYC](https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/sHRljIHnLSI)

## Listen — the whole playlist

*Stimming with Aurora* is Ryan's own YouTube playlist, and it is almost entirely live performances. That is the thesis of this page in the form of a collection: when the body is the argument, you need the footage where the body is.

### Sources & credits

**AURORA.** The opening quotation is from the [Red Bull session](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDVwakM7MxQ) for “Conqueror,” lightly condensed from her spoken answer with ellipses marking the cuts; nothing has been added or reordered. AURORA has spoken publicly about being neurodivergent and we use her word, naming no diagnosis — see [Zine No. 13](https://starstuff.earth/aurora-zine.html). Release years were checked against release databases rather than recalled: *Runaway* and *Running With The Wolves* 2015; *Conqueror*, *Warrior*, *I Went Too Far* and *Through The Eyes Of A Child* 2016 (*All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend*); *Queendom*, *It Happened Quiet*, *Forgotten Love* and *Gentle Earthquakes* 2018 (*Infections of a Different Kind – Step 1*); *Animal*, *The Seed*, *A Different Kind Of Human* and *Mothership* 2019 (*Step 2*); *Exist For Love* 2020; *Cure For Me* and *Giving In To The Love* 2021 (*The Gods We Can Touch*); *Invisible Wounds*, *The Conflict Of The Mind*, *Some Type Of Skin*, *A Soul With No King* and *To Be Alright* 2024 (*What Happened to the Heart?*). Where a card names a session rather than a release, the year given is the song's.

**The aurora.** Atomic oxygen's green line at 557.7 nm is the ¹S → ¹D transition, upper-state lifetime ≈0.7 s; the red line at 630.0 nm is ¹D → ³P, lifetime ≈110 s. Both are forbidden under the electric-dipole selection rules — *forbidden* meaning slow, not impossible. Collisional quenching removes the energy before emission at lower altitudes, so the green appears at roughly 100–150 km and the red only above ~150 km, occasionally much higher. Checked against atmospheric-optics and auroral-spectroscopy sources; altitudes are approximate and given as such. *Aurora* is the Roman goddess of the dawn, and the lights carry her name; we make no more of the coincidence with the artist's name than that.

**Stim listening** is **Jim Irion**'s coinage — listening repetitively to a single song, album or playlist — and is documented on the Stimpunks [stim-listening](https://stimpunks.org/glossary/stim-listening/) glossary page along with *samefoods*. *Stimming with Aurora* is Ryan Boren's playlist.

**A note on the notes.** No lyrics are reproduced anywhere on this page — every card describes its song instead, matching [Zine No. 13](https://starstuff.earth/aurora-zine.html), which reproduces no lyrics or artwork either. The songs, recordings and performances are the work of AURORA and her collaborators; the readings are ours. Embeds use `youtube-nocookie.com`, as the zine does.
